  1. Hi

Can registered breeders sell there pups with no papers??

As we're looking for a new pup , i'm emailing registered breeders got one reply sell pups with no papers at $850, with papers an extra $300-400 extra

    thanks in advanced.

No, its in teh breeders coade of ethics, all pups from the litter MUST be registered. Ether on Main or Limited Papers. Anything esle is dodgy!!

  2. 9wks ago my boy was used at stud by a guy who has had litters before, he also bred the girl. It was her first litter.

He emailed me pics of her last wk, didn't look very big, and i thought she'd go early. She did, only by 2 days. He left her that day on a chain and when he came home he found 4 pups and very cold. Poor girl and poor pups.

So he got them all settled and she was doing her job i guess. Now 3 days later he emails again saying they're all gone. I guess he didn't spend much time helping and keeping an eye on them. He doesn't know what happened, but i'm sure they'd be ok if they were given a hand.

So my question now is, would you give him another mating for free? Would you give a mating at all again? If you would, would you charge same as last time?

I feel bad, they were such nice pups too. Such a shame.

Give him nothing...........that poor bitch on a chain...........those poor pups..............he should be whipped.

  3. Having spoken to quite a few people lately and reading this forum it seems that alot of breeders take them away and don't let their bitch eat them. Some say its disgusting to let them eat it, some say they line them up and count them then throw them away - they don't let the bitch eat them because they want to count them all, some say it gives the bitch the runs and they don't want to be cleaning that up as well . . . Miriad of reasons why or why not.

I grew up in a 'dog' family - my parents and grandparents bred dogs and it was always the case that the bitch would eat as many of them as she wanted. I do let our girls eat them because it gives them those rich nutrients they need for the first few days - they generally eat 4 or 5 only and then the rest I throw out (I guess eating 10 to 12 would be too much food). Yes it can give them the runs a little bit but then the girls go out whenever they need to and I am cleaning out the box about 4 times a day anyway so have never had an issue with that side of it. I check each one off on my whelping running sheet as each pup is born so I keep track of them that way and I note how many she has eaten.

I am interested to see how many breeders let their bitches eat them or not and why or why not ?

Eating the placenta is all a natural part of whelping. I always let my Chihuahua's eat them after I have had a quick look at it.

  4. Hi Guys,

This is an extremely long post and I apologise, but please read on...

I am just after some advice from the breeders here. My dog had a litter of 10 puppies (Feb 13), 5 of which went to their new homes at 8 weeks. 2 weeks later, 4 out of the 5 puppies I still had at home contracted a severe e-coli infection. One passed away, the rest made a full recovery after a few days on a drip. The e-coli was diagnosed after a stool culture.

About 5 days ago, someone who had purchased a puppy at 8 weeks called me to say the puppy is vomiting and lethargic. I told him to take it to the vet ASAP, telling him what had happened with my puppies to reiterate the urgency needed for the dog to see the vet.

So he took it and called me on Saturday to say it will be coming home on Sunday and the vet said this puppy came from a very sick litter, blah, blah.....So, I called the vet, and of course he said he didnt say that. Also he said he doubts this puppy's illness is related to my other ones, this puppy wasnt as sick as mine but he couldnt be sure what it is exactly because the new owner wasnt prepared to pay to have a culture done.

Now this guy called me last night to say the puppy had died (which TBH IDK if I believe, why would the vet send it home on Sunday if it was still at risk or death), and telling me how devestated they are, etc.....

BUT, in the same breath, he is asking for reimbursement for the actual pedigree papers (I am still waiting on the papers from Dogs Victoria), should he not receive his them...

I am not sure what the prodecure is about the death of puppies/dogs who are registered with Dogs Victoria and I am under the assuption that because these are Amstaff puppies, he plans to use the papers with a Pitbull, but my papers will 'prove' it is an Amstaff. Why else would he want papers for a dog whom is supposedly dead ?

He finished the conversation saying Dont forget I know where you live....now I am not scared, and I do not want to supply him papers for a dead puppy, to be misued, and the vet will not tell me anything due to confidentality.

The actual papers cost like $30, so I am thinking of giving him the $30 and showing him that is the actual cost for the papers, then he will have his money back, but I will not refund any more.

This is the first time I have dealt with such a fool and I would appreicate absolutely ANY advice you have to offer.

    Thank you in advance.

DO NOT GIVE HIM THE PAPERS!!!!!! He does not need them now...............you only need papers for live dogs.............he is not untitled to them now.......you also have the right to ask for the dead pup back.....no pup, no refund.

  5. Is it considered normal practice to transport a pregnant bitch due within the week to W.A to give birth due on a Friday and tail docking pre booked on the Monday.

I was told they were born on the Sunday, a caesar was performed as last pup was known to be dead, tail docking on the Monday then returned by car back to Vic say Thursday?

I think the ANKC just the other day put out the new rules about dogs being sent to WA to whelp and be tail docked then returned. Check the ANKC site for details.

  6. Hi all,

Just wondering what was the going rate in other councils. We are in South Gippsland (Victoria) our dog regs have arrived today

Category 1 - Dangerous/Restriced breeds $180 (Am Pit bull, Tosa, Dogo, Canario, Fila)

    Category 2 - $60 - Microchipped only

    Category 3 - $21.50 Micro & Desexed

only concessions are for Pensioners, Vet affairs, Repat Gold card and War widows.

this is a huge jump from last year where we paid $30 a dog -

    Yours in bewilderment

    Kate

    Werribee Victoria

    Micro & Desexed - $12.00

    Micro Only $36.00

You pay a lot more over that side KAte!!

  7. As the titled says are they a recognised dog here in australia. Someone said this on facebook page (not someone i know)

(my mate just bred purebred catahoulas, $1000 pups, she had 11 we hit 5 on the head straight up...)

I just don't understand is there ever any reason to do this why would so many need this done to them?? I looked them up there a nice looking dog they seemed to be used for pigging (horrible sport). I asked on the post why but no reply

Do you have the link to the facebook page? This needs to be reported to facebook and this person needs to know that in no uncertain terms what he has said is a crime and chargable by law!

  8. I am curious as to why some dog breeds are not as popular as others, especially the rarer breeds.

As breeders what are your thoughts on why the Pyrenean Mastiff isnt more popular, there is one registered breeder and the breed has been in australia since 2005? i think.

When importing a new breed into the country how do you know what will succeed here and what wont?

Do you think the Spanish Mastiff will do well here or fade in the background?

    Thanks :(

Thats like asking how long is a piece of string?

Personal preference is a vast and often very fickle thing. All new things take time for people to come around too. Dog breeds are no exception.

I wouldnt import a breed based on 'will they do well here" Id import because its what I want to do and what I felt for the breed. Dogs are not "keep up the Jones items". Go with your feelings.

  9. Hi

There more than likely is a thread on here already regarding this topic but was wondering if anyone out there has any advice for me.

We have British Bulldogs, we were put onto Proplan Performance (dry food) by a breeder we know, our dogs love it but at the moment our wallet isn't :laugh: :D

We have tried quite a few others before going to proplan (eukanuba, royal canin, advance, science diet) unfortunately our dogs didn't like any of these.

By posting this thread I am hoping someone out there will be able to recommend a cheaper alternative with the same quality (well here's hoping) ;) :D :(

Where are you? Vitality is a great deal, but you can only get it directly from the factory in Naval Base WA.

My dogs & I have been through them all!!................I have never had a problem with Supercoat and it has less salt than some of those other top quality brands. My dogs and i have not looked back.

  10. I know that this has been discussed numerous times but this is the first time I have heard of this. Faith is six weeks old and will be due to have her first vaccination soon. I called a vet this morning to find out what regime they follow. They have recently changed to vaccinate at 6, 8 and 10 weeks. this seems very close between the needles to me. Has anyone heard of vaccinating this close together before. I want to vaccinate at approximately 8 and 12 weeks.

I thought 6, 12 & 16 weeks was appropriate. I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that canine diseases are on the increase?

  11. I have a papillon bitch who was due yesterday, but is showing absolutely no signs of whelping as yet, apart from a tiny bit of nesting on Saturday. She is quite happy, and still eating. I haven't checked temp yet, but am about to. How long would you let her go without taking her to the vet, she doesn't seem at all worried. This is her first litter as well, so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. It's a bit puzzling, as I've never had one go over before. I'm sure of dates as there were only two matings.Any advice would be great, thanks. :D

A bitch whelps not from the date of mating but from the date of ovulation. So this can put your dates out by a few days.

If she ovulated after mating, then she will go over. If she ovulated before mating then she will be earlier.

  12. If a pup or adult for that matter has an upset tummy there is a reason for it.

Hiding it with buscopan and the like is not going to help.

Is there constipation or diarrhea? Slippery Elm is best thing for upset tummy’s.

Get it from the health food shop, it can be added regularly to food or add water to make a paste and syringe it, add some honey to make it more palatable.

  13. If you are deriving a profitable income from the breeding/selling of your dogs then you can be taxed.

I don’t know any breeder (except back yard breeders) who ever make a profit.

If you have 10 breeding canines then you are considered a business breeder. The ATO should be told about these breeders.

  14. Two of my 6 appear to have some dandruff/dry skin and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas??

I have done the 'pinch test' on their skin and they don't appear dehydrated or anything. I also checked inside their mouths and they weren't dry either (a tip I got from one of my breeding books). They are feeding well, as active as the rest are and have more than doubled their birth weights.

Otherwise they seem in perfect health, coat is soft and shiny also. Just dandruff-y?

    That will pass.

  15. Just wanting some info about distichiasis in relation to breeding and mode of inheritance.

I'm aware it's quite common in several breeds.

The reason I ask is because, Distichiasis is mentioned as occurring in Havanese in ONE US Hav health paper written some 10 years ago but the condition seems to have either been brushed under the carpet or not given any heed since.

Those of you with breeds which suffer Distichiasis - is it a major consideration in your breeding choices? Do you/would you still breed with a dog who has had a known case of Distichiasis?

Any good websites about the condition would also be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

I just Googled it, lots of sites come up, you need to go through them. A great one is the images on the google list.

  16. I need to buy an airline approved crate big enough for a 14 week old bloodhound pup to fly to NZ.

Normally i just go through Dogtainers, but the owner doesnt want to as it is nearly $1000 more than doing it herself.

Where would the best place be to buy one,she isnt fussed if it is second hand.

    thanks

I prefer the air line crates. Get one from the air line you are flying the pup over with.

  17. Im after a puppy about the size of a staffy maby a little bigger- with the markings of a rotty. Doberman X staffy or Rotty X staffy?

Anyone know if there are any on their way, or any friends who have one for sale?

    cheers!!

Just get one of those pedigree breeds. We strongly discourage cross breed mongrels.

  18. Had a shock and a laugh today..walked into the room where my first time mum toy poodle was feeding her pups..was tidying up and then heard funny slurping noise. Looked around and there was mum bending around .. sucking an available boob ..pups were happy on the others.....3 Pups all fat and healthy.one month old ...mother certainly not lacking for food or drink !!! Has anyone else had their bitch do this ??? How in the world can I stop it ..can't supervise at night

That is gorgeous.............she is doing because she can!! Maybe she was wondering what all the fuss about it is with the pups and thought she would check it out. I dont think you can stop her without upsetting the apple cart so to speak. She only has a few more weeks before weaning and it eventually dries up, so dont worry.

  19. I have a quick question for breeders, I think its law that all puppies should be microchipped before sale.....I maybe wrong ....I have noticed that alot of registered breeders still dont microchip there pups why is this? my dogs that I have are registered with there canine bodies & they werent microchipped on purchase...... I didnt get these dogs any cheaper because they werent microchipped either.......Is it optional to the breeder to microchip? or is it by law?

If I recall, here in Victoria, a dog must be micro chipped prior to council registration. Most breeders (in Vic) don’t microchip before sale because it’s an extra cost and the breeder then has to transfer the chip into the new owners name. Let’s face it, new owners hardly ever transfer in to their names so at the risk of the new owner not doing it, the breeder doesn’t chip the pup. Therefore leaving the full responsibility up the new owners. I suggest to my puppy buyers that they use my name as an emergency contact when chipping.

In SA a pup can be chipped in the new owners name, now how convenient would that be here in Vic??

  20. Just a quick question on worming requirements for sending puppies from Vic to Tassie.

I have a pug pup going over to Tassie soon and the new owners said I need the pup to be wormed (incuding Hydatid tapeworm) 14 days prior to sending. Also need a stat dec or vet letter as proof of the pup being wormed with an all wormer (and the packaging), he is already done so would not want him done again so soon. They also want the packaging - I buy in bulk so will need to get a small pack to send with him.

I was told by someone else that it is within 10 days and they have not had a vet letter - their office is now closed so will have to call them tomorrow.

So what do DOLers do when sending pups to Tassie?

I went over to Tassie in October and my Vet had to worm the dogs himself and then gave me the stat dec, it has to be done "within" 14 days of arrival in tassie so it can be done a couple days before. A phone call to your vet will tell you what to do.

  21. Hi all I need some input on pulling the plug on the sale of a dog when they have paid a deposit?? were do I stand ? I would give them the deposit back of course, just have a bad feeling about the whole thing.

you have a few options, be honest, or say the pup has shown some health problems and needs further testing, tell them you are required to give them back their deposit until the testing is complete. Hopefully they will go elsewhere in the mean time and you never hear from them again. But be prepared to continue on the lie if they do keep calling back.
