  1. I'm sure there were Newfies there last year......positive there was one in the Gp lineup....
  2. My thoughts exactly And mine. Social media has given people a whole new audience for conspicuous compassion. Amen to that.
  3. OSoSwift - there may be a vacant establishment at Bracken Ridge on the horizon.....
  4. The first and only time I went to the million paws walk there was a woman walking a cat...surrounded by hundreds of dogs and getting pissed off every time a dog got wihin a few metres of her. She received an earful from quite a few dog owners - complete stupidity IMO......I'm sure she thought she was being clever....
  5. I've had some shocking experiences from kennels - the good, the bad and the ugly....now I have one where I know the owners very well and completely trust them with any of my animals...I have never had that before....the dogs come back as well and fit (or better) as when they went in...I don't worry about fights, ticks, incidents, escapes, vet issues being ignored or anything else...so I agree with OSoSwift - they exist - you just have to go looking and be selective...
  6. How do you know it's a kennel from Bracken Ridge? It doesn't mention a suburb in the article.
  7. Kirislin - if you look at the pics she is seen dragging the dog away - they are both bloody....and another shot she is strolling off with friends...dog still on a loose lead......complete f*ckwit...she deserves to be imprisoned. I doubt the dog will make it out of the pound.
  8. The dog isn't being PTS as a punishment. One can sugar coat it but of course the dog is being PTS as punishment...if it hadn't bitten it wouldn't be PTS. I have sympathy for the OP - have you yet seen a vet and had the dog checked given that his behaviour has changed towards you as well? Pain, ailment, disease could all be factors that could potentially be treated.....
  9. I have been on both sides of this equation........had a puppy be diagnosed with something unexpected 6 months after sale...I absolutely wanted to know and ensured owners and puppy received what they needed. The owners did not want to return her...fair enough. They keep me informed how she is travelling and so far so good. I purchased a puppy before Xmas...started displaying symptoms which were diagnosed as a serious genetic issue.....breeder really didn't want to know...begrudgingly has returned part of the price of the puppy but was far more interestred in me returning him to her for her to PTS...I suspect so noone would know he existed. I doubt she has warned the other people with littermates two of whom I believe are showing and planning to breed despite my imploring her to do so before it is too late...and then there's the pup she kept and will breed with....I've spoken to everyone I can to try to stop her breeding this on but I think my efforts are for nought....my boy continues to receive treatment and is lockdown to stop him reinjuring the surgery site...I am thousands out of pocket but will try to get him best quality of life I can...he will never be bred and never rehomed.....
  10. http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/dog-put-down-due-to-open-wounds-overgrown-nails-20130702-2p8lm.html A family who owned an emaciated dog with matted fur, an open wound, and overgrown nails that were so long they had curled more than 360 degrees has been fined for animal cruelty. A 72-year-old man, his wife and daughter were fined $5000 each and permanently prohibited from owning a domestic animal when the matter was in the Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday. Giovanni Bassi, Maria Bassi and Julie Bassi of White Gum Valley were charged with being the persons in charge of an animal that suffered harm which could have been alleviated by the taking of reasonable steps. Bindi's owners have been banned from owning any more pets. The charges were in relation to the care of their seven-year-old female Maltese shih tzu cross dog, named Bindi. Advertisement The family home was visited by an RSPCA inspector on May 10, 2012 in response to a cruelty complaint. The inspector observed the small dog to be in a poor condition with badly matted fur and an open wound on her front right leg. Bindi was surrendered and taken to RSPCA's Malaga headquarters for veterinary examination. She had to be sedated to alleviate pain prior to further examination. After extensive examination, the dog was found to be blind, severely emaciated, with a poor body condition and osteoarthritis. According to the RSPCA Bindi's nails were also overgrown to the extent that some curled more than 360 degrees, she had a flea infestation which had been present for months, if not years and there were odorous discharges from her ears and eyes. The dog was euthanased on humane grounds. In sentencing, Magistrate Lawrence said this was a serious example of animal cruelty. RSPCA chief executive David van Ooran said RSPCA was pleased with today's outcome "in that it sends a strong message to the community that pet ownership is a serious responsibility." 11. Do I think police over reacted - yes absolutely......do I think the owner placed himself and the dog in harm's way - yes.....why not roll up the windows of the car when you put the dog in it or better yet just keep driving anfd don't stop in the first place.....an awful death for the dog......
  12. I had a councillor of my state body tell my neighbours that my breed was bred to "hunt down and kill people" and would also "kill all the local pets and wildlife"...scared the hell out of the neighbours until they actually came over and met ther dogs and realised it was all BS....
  13. Tony Smith at Fernvale Vets - simply fabulous...well worth the drive and it is a return trip of 260kms for me :) It is reasonably easy to get an appointment....
  14. As a matter of interest how long ago was it that you had decided against an Elkhound? If you have suddenly switched to another breed just how much time did you spend researching your new choice?
  15. from the SMH A dog has bitten off a man's nose in Sydney's west. The 30-year-old was attacked by a dog reported to be a Rottweiler at North St Marys about 4.45pm on Saturday, the NSW ambulance service said in a statement. Paramedics transported the man to Nepean Hospital in a stable condition. AAP Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/dog-bites-off-mans-nose-in-sydneys-west-20130303-2fe5z.html#ixzz2MT2FOYWy
  16. Caboolture KC wishes to alert members and exhibitors that due to errors by Dogs Qld that there are several mistakes in the show schedule for our April shows. Please refer to the email sent by DQ. Importantly please note that the correct address for entries is 20 Abbeygrace Crt Caboolture, NOT 28 Abbeygrace Crt as stated by DQ in Dogworld. Any exhibitors who have sent entries to the wrong address advertised by DQ can call the show Secretary after Wednesday and she can tell them if their entry got through. We don't want any exhibitor to have any additional expense but the CKC are not responsible for the mistake and as such we are trying to fix up the stuff up we didn't make.
  17. I find this discussion fascinating....when a prison officer left a dog in a vehicle and it died posters had him strung up and quartered for his negligence....I don't see any difference...he should be charged with negligence and sacked......
  18. I have insurnace - my vet knows this. Because I am a registered breeder I get a discount so no price hikes here.....
  19. That is so mortifying - I have always had respect for the armed forces.....but if any of them consider that acceptablke then I REALLY need to rethink my support.....
  20. I only voted for 2 of these individuals...... it is quite scary to think of what some of those elected will possibly do......
  21. So where exactly do you suggest they draw the line? No claims on working, agility or show dogs as they were not being "usual or typical" dogs? No claims on injuries incurred outside of the house? No claims on skin treatment if they have flea allergies as fleas could be prevented? No claims on gastro blockages as bones are evil? Where does it end? I don't understand people not willing to claim on their insurance (unless it is absolutely piddling and not even worth the no claim bonus) - why bother to have it in the first place?
  22. I have my dogs on my home and contents policy - the company has covered 2 c-sections with no problems. You need to hunt around. I don't agree that they shouldn't cover your costs. If you have full private health isurance you are covered for pregnancy etc so why shouldn't the same apply for pet insurance?
  23. soaring magpie - if you read the articles their is no law applicable as the attack occurred on private property. The laws here are tougher..... Would I keep the dogs after something like this? No I don't believe so.....and I certainly wouldn't/couldn't rehome them in any good conscience.....terrible terrible thing......
  24. http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/dog-park-discussion-unleashed-for-public-comment-20121108-29018.html Dog park discussion unleashed for public comment Off the leash ... Canberrans are being asked to comment on the location of a new dog park. Three sites have been identified as the potential homes for a new $300,000 northside dog park. The selected sites are in Russell, O'Connor and North Lyneham - and the public is being asked to comment on their suitability. There are already four off-leash dog parks in the ACT - in Gungahlin, Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Yarralumla. Three locations have been identified. Territory and Municipal Services design and development manager Diana Hill said the existing parks were very popular and there was increasing demand for more. Advertisement "The three potential sites have been chosen for their suitability against the ACT Government's dog park selection criteria including easy access, parking opportunities, ability to securely fence the site, provision of water, shade and an interesting terrain for dogs and their owners to enjoy," she said. "The new inner-north dog park will feature separate enclosures for small and big dogs, access for all users, seating, a bubbler and water sources for dogs." Ms Hill said socialising and exercising dogs was critical to their training. "The new dog park will increase accessibility to safe and secure off-leash spaces for northside residents and their dogs," she said. The Russell site is in Grevillea Park off Menindee Drive; the O'Connor site is an open space area enclosed by Barry Drive, Fairfax Street and Dryandra Street and North Lyneham is an open space area located off Ellenborough Street. All proposed sites are able to accommodate a fenced dog park of about 1.3 hectares. For more details go to visit www.timetotalk.act.gov.au where an online survey asks people to rank the suitability of the selected sites. Hardcopy surveys are also available at any public library or Canberra Connect shopfront. The consultation closes at 5pm on January 11 Read more: http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/dog-park-discussion-unleashed-for-public-comment-20121108-29018.html#ixzz2Bfm3Z0xC
