I was searching for information about Dog training groups and came across this thread. We have just signed up with ADT in Oakleigh and it is reassuring that at least two people have recommended them.

One thing I have taken away from the information sessions that I have been to is that other than socialising your dog, most dog training centres really focus on training the humans as it is us that can confuse our dogs during their training. That is certainly what I need as Lucy (4mth beagle) is the first dog I have lived with since I was a child.

can i ask, is it possible that a dog can change their behaviour for the people that own it? what i mean is, i like our dog to heel by my side and he does that for me, whereas my OH (sounds like the DH described in this thread), he refuses to wind the lead in so the dog goes all over the place and he lets the dog do that. the dog pretty much changes to suit him.

is this normal? or is my dog more intelligentthan most changing, obviously his behaviour to suit each person>? :D

what is his temperament like, is he friendly towards people and other dogs? or a bit nervous of other dogs/people? I should say, is he unsure of other dogs/people? is that him in the avatar, he looks like a cheeky little thing

well, i would look at the colour, which is ridgeback, then i would look at photos of pedigree Rottis and see if there is a resemblance in the ears or head shape. with our rescue, got told pure kelpie, definately not pure kelpie seeing pictures of show kelpies. looked at the eyes and shape of ears and head and we came up with GSP x Kelpie, body shape as well. in the chest of your dog, i can see Rotti, has she got a ridge on her back at all? would need side views to get a better idea. usually when i name rescues, (found a few wandering) ring up the registry and they ask what sort of dog, usually i will say the cross and i am usually 100% right.

he is going ok for a 4 month old puppy! something minor must of happened for him to take a slight step backward. but anyways, you are doing good to have him for 10 weeks and him almost there in house training.

maybe like a baby try tiring him out before you put him to bed. and yes keep them all separate so he can't play with others and wake the household up and the neighborhood other than that i know of some peop[le that just couldn't do anything with the breed involved so got the dog debarked. don't agree with that im afraid always hear them trying to bark and its an awful sound.

but my friends yappy little dog, she rehomed it to a property that was far far away from everything else LOL maybe that could be an option for you if you can't keep him quiet in future. pick a home that has a big big property or a farm or house with some acreage. those types of breeds really don't suit a suburbian type situation.

once knew some neighbors that had a kelpie cross goodness knows as well, and they worked f/t and left the dog outside all day the poor thing, so it would bark from morning til night sent everyone crackers it did.

i think they eventually moved so sigh of relief. i felt like throwing a bone over the fence to keep the dog occupied and to keep it quiet!

believe it or not, we have our kelpie cross boy trained to kitty litter at the start (ETA in garage not in house BTW!!!) then took it away he is a big boy no where near the size of a cat. bigger than usual totally house trained inside F/T now and we got him as a young 8 month old pup. it took a while so i'd say hang in there they do eventually get it, some take longer than others. i never did let our boy roam free in the house unattended until i was sure he got our training regime down pat - i still check to make sure but haven't found anything for a year or more now. he is so good now. so until then keep a good eye on him until you know the signs that he needs to go potty. sounds like he is doing it behind your back becuase he wreckons it is ok to do that, so hence why you need to maybe yes, keep him around you with a lead. its not so bad with the young ones.

maybe try something that i read earlier, follow him around if he goes to pee, get a whistle and blow that, it will startle him enough to distract his attention then put him outside in the same spot mind you. something extra for your training. but i would definately agree with try tying the puppy to yourself or if not, just keep an eye on him inside.

we have two males that are housetrained. so no, males versus females, males aren't always the dirtiest inside. we believe its the training. and you can train any dog just have to work out the best way for each individual doggy.

its probably the breeds he has in him, working dogs that bark constantly to round up the stock, i had a friend with a spitz breed and one of hers just wouldn't stop barking. I notice when you see a whole heap together too, they all are pretty noisy. poms they were once much bigger and come from a herding breed. so hence why some bark to round up the herd.

being young maybe you have that on your side get him into good habits now whatever method you choose to do with him.

well its good when you are a bachelor and have no kids or partner. also its nice when you have your own business then you can take the dogs with you if you like. you can pretty much do as you want with that sort of a life :cool: very nice indeed all you have is the pooch to spend your hard earned money on. not directed at anyone in particular JUST MY BRO

I think if you are committed you can work f/t and be a good pet owner you just have to be prepared. Surely it is better to be working and have a pet who is part of the family then to be at home and be neglecting your pet anyway.

that is a good point bek, my brother works casual F/t sometimes he at home working or sometimes for the whole week he might be working not at home but in the office and the dog he has now is fully grown but is as happy as larry with him. he gets everything and gets walked every night for an hour or more. loves his park runs every night. you open up my bro's cupboard and its like a dog shop

i just saw today a family that has owned a pair of jacks and they were always not locked up going all over the road and cars had to slow down so someone called the pound and they picked them up. the family didn't care, then i see they have gone and got more dogs and again, they are out, so it won't be long before the pound come again. these sorts of people should never be owning dogs!

I see that someone has come along and tied the kelpie, really friendly to a tree, and the family don't appear to be home they look like they have gone on holiday they haven't been there for a couple of days now.

I saw a little dog in a similar circumstance all over the road and the mother was inside somewhere with a window open watching me i could feel her eyes and her 6 or 7 yr old son was out front playing with the dog. not behind the fence in full view so i went up to the kid in a loud voice for the mum to hear, (knew she was listening) i will give you an hour thats your dog isn't it? the boy goes yes, why will you give me an hour? i said because your dog for its safety should be behind this fence, he goes ok. i said if he still isn't behind that fence within the hour i will take this dog off you go and tell mum.

he goes ok. so i went back an hour later, with a lead mind you and the dog was gone. so my work was done that day. poor puppy dog. felt so sorry for it, i noticed a week later the same thing happened so i didn't say anything just went up with a lead and looked towards the house, then the dog was behind the fence again. he never got let out again after that.

We did think about getting 2, but the advice I received was that they can tend to bond with each other rather than you, and that if you go with 2 you are better to have a period of a few months in between.

Im sorry but i don't believe that at all; i know some have said that on this forum but i have proof that that theory may have holes in it . we have bought two together and they didn't bond more than with us they were puppies. we have sold 2 together and it didn't happen for that owner as well.

in regards to not selling to people working full-time we are inclined to do the same, this is for young puppies only. older dogs yes we have placed in working households. the older dogs are house trained by us and have done all their training so makes it easier for the new owners to cope a bit better.

have you considered the fact, that if you get an older dog it has already had its training? also do you realise that you are going to have to house train your puppy and you won't be there to properly train them you will be working? in order to properly train you need to be there it makes it harder for the puppy. Not unless you do have the puppy outside but then there is the factor that someone might come along these days and take your puppy. people are desperate these days. see a puppy unattended, take. so they are safer inside the house, thats my opinion. a golden ret puppy, they have a pretty good temperament too generally so easier to steal i am afraid now if you were going to get dob or a rott maybe it reduces the chances of being stolen although everyone knows a young puppy is less of a threat of biting the thief.

the reason is because young puppies need alot of shaping, socialisation and supervision. its true you can do all that after work but they can also did you know, get depressed being left for long periods and being young as well more so. an adult dog is more able to cope.

i recently gave my parents one dog to look after and she was the only one there on their property and she got depressed would not eat! so i gave them another dog and she perked up. classic example.

also, my brother wanted a puppy too, but i steered him towards a shelter/rescue dog that really needed a home more than a puppy that has been bred by a breeder.

we have also bred and run on puppies and we work (everyone does have to these days to earn a crust) and they have coped quite well but again, we have not brought up one pup on its own they have always been with other dogs.

one sign is; you will see the gums redder than usual and they swell up as well.

where are you situated? in melbourne south eastern suburbs, my brother just took in his collie cross for a DIY hydrobath. this was for $10 apparently you have buttons? for wash, then vaccum up water then blow dry etc. etc. im taking my dog with his dog next time.

we fed our dogs that (well two of them) and both got sick. i heard it has high salt content. so they were both drinking heaps. one is still not right. i don't know what's in it, but it took ages for us and the vet to come up with what was wrong, it was kind of like parvo symptoms! we thought we are best to feed the dogs natural food like mince and vegies not commercial dog food. everytime we do the dogs get sick.....maybe its because ours aren't use to the commercial stuff anymore i'd say, we've been feeding natural. or BARF.
