  1. I am looking for some recommendations for a positive dog trainer in the Campbelltown area who can do home visits. Must be a gentle trainer towards the human side as well as the dog side of the duo. Clicker training is helping currently and would be preferred. Happy for recommendations of centres that do 1 week boarding/training too, with follow io and human training. This is not for me, rather for a friend. I need to trust any recommendation before passing on details. Thanks!
  2. Met with council this morning. Will find out what happened.
  3. My friends dog was attacked at a dog park yesterday. She is having surgery today. $2500 of vet treatment. Police were called. Told unless it was a trained attack dog, they did not want to know about it. Ranger is on holidays until next week. I have told her to take photos and document everything. This dog has a history apparently. The owner was told to get his dog away and responded with "it is just playing"... Is there anything else she needs to do for when she reports to rangers?
  4. My heart breaks for you honey. I cannot believe that she's not here... she was always going to be there... grey around the muzzle and warm around the heart. Sending you so much love ...x
  5. After having a new puppy get VERY sick immediately after a plane flight (Vic to NSW), I would never have a puppy put on a plane again. added to that, there are lots of dogs that travel that you have no idea what diseases they are carrying and spreading to others.
  6. Bilbo... where (exactly in w'bool) LOL... not when the date is in the heading!
  7. Oooh. Warrnambool has a dog show on? Might have to go visit! Where is it held?
  8. Appropriate behaviour in an offleash area is to have your dog recall, put back on a leash and wait for others to enter the area. Take your dog on a leash, introduce the dogs and then let them offleash. By allowing the dogs to meet on the leash, under absolute control you are allowing the dogs and the other owners control of the situation. You then ask the owner if their dogs want to play, is it ok for them to run around and if all is ok, then let your dogs off. It is unfair to assume that all dogs in an offleash area want to play, or will react kindly to a dog running up to them - friendly or not. A dog that runs up to another dog is assuming an attacking behaviour (even if they are fun) and the other dogs must go on the defensive from the outset. Best thing is to put your dog on a lead every time it is to meet a dog in the offlead area.
  9. Jed, Mika was from a new breeder, their first litter. I ended up going to big vet names around trying to get answers for what she went through. I'm not fretting it, I just found the video so amazing to see as it was Mika all over. Mika had other small issues (one eye that bulged more than the other, and appeared to get worse as she got older) but vets didn't seem worried about that.. but she was very sick the week I got her (pneumonia), and all the further issues were attributed to that. I just find it all interesting....
  10. OMG. it's like watching a video of Mika. She scratched CONSTANTLY for years. I checked with different vets and different clinics... food issues I was told.. changed her diet, not response to it... changed her flea treatments... grass allergies... flea allergies... tried to find so many reasons, but nothing would help. She had steriods for a bit and that seemed to work for a little bit. She'd scratch and she'd suck her toes, and scratch, and chase flies that weren't there, and scratch and scratch... She died of a suspected heart attack.. I had rehomed her by then due to circumstances... I don't know the exact details of her death, other than medication could not stop it. She was found convulsing I believe, and rushed to the vet and after numerous treatments the decision to PTS was made... She had just turned 5 (or was that 6?) years old... that video has spooked me...
  11. I've been quoted between $180 and $310 to have my female rabbit spayed. It varies quite significantly depending on the vet. I just didn't expect *that* high of a cost before getting a female rabbit. I expected around $120 - $150... it just seems to change depending on where you go!
  12. There are mobile dog grooming businesses being sold on ebay all the time.. Go do the course, while you search and look out for your own trailer and do it that way. Much better!
  13. Hi Fiona I understand your concern. I gave a very good description of the GSD, including the number of tags it had around its neck. I saw a house where it ran from and ran back too. Council records confirm a GSD lives at this address. The dog did have a chance to escape that day, and the owners did not know until the dog was returned to them by their neighbours. The council checked for other GSDs in the vicinity however there are no other dogs in the street, or the cross streets that match the description. There is very low possibility of the dog being different to the one identified.
  14. Oh, Cordy - would love to come and visit at some stage... but will give you some time to get used to your newest member of the family.
  15. The dog and owner were located. A dangerous dog order will be placed. They will have 3 months to comply with all demands. Or surrender the dog for euthanasia. I just signed my statement for the council. On the upside some nice friendly GSDs are coming to visit this afternoon to give me some shepherd time.
  16. I love my camera, and it has a great macro and such, but I really wish I had a DSLR. I hope to get one next year.
  17. My aunt and a friend both have the HS10 and they are not 100% sold on it after having it for a few months. Slow shutter speed is one of the downfalls. I'd look at a low end DSLR..
  18. Fuji Finepix HS10 is a BRIDGE camera - not a DSLR. It is a digital camera with manual capabilities, a zoom that works like a manual camera, but it is an All In ONe Camera - the lens is NOT detachable. I have an earlier model. A Fuji Finepix S100FS. It is a wonderful camera, I adore it. But I still wish I had a DSLR. Even if I could not afford a Nikon or a Canon, I would go for a Pentax or something very cheap/entry level and work my way on learning the skills of a DSLR - and then buy a better camera down the track. That's what I wish I had done 2 years ago.
  19. It's finally working on my computer. Well done, congratulations!
  20. They live in the city, have a fully fenced yard. They go to "the farm" about 4 times a year. I am not sure what it's like when they go there. For all I know the dog could stay with the father at the house and not go to the farm. the Schipperke (sp ooops!) is one I had not thought of. Keeshond. I think the coat would be a bit too much for this family. Smooth Collie was on my list, but I was not sure what the activity level would be like... Flat coated retrievers - they are smaller than golden's right? are they more or less bouncy, or more or less working dog type? I really appreciate all of the time everyone is putting into this thread
  21. What's the difference between the two different corgi breeds? are there any specific health issues to know about in relation to corgis? If we remove the chasing rabbits part of the equation, does that free up any other breeds? (I don't know what the fencing is like at the farm where they go visiting, but there may be a fully fenced dog suitable yard).. Cavaliers Corgis What about other spaniels? Are all Beagles driven by their nose? Are schauzers the same grooming requirements as a poodle? I hope to take the Mama of this family out to erskine park one day to have a look at different dogs, but I want to get an idea first to help them get some research behind them.
  22. They were not aware of the oodle coats. They don't want a dog that needs excessive salon trips. They don't want a poodle type I do not believe. Poodles were not on their list - but other people have been the ones telling them to go for oodles. As they do work for doggy people who are oodle focussed or greyhound adoption focussed, they are being preached at a bit... So I told them I would come up with a list. They also were not aware that oodles were cross breeds (thought they were breeds).
  23. We're probably in need of a breed suggestion forum! Friends of mine are planning on getting a dog. So far they have been recommended -oodles. Specifically Cav x Poodle. I almost had a meltdown. They have also been recommended Greyhounds. Again, not a great choice for this family. Wish List: *adult knee high *suitable for 2 kids (6 and 8), though lots of kids visit of all ages. *not a destructive breed *house dog *easy to train *easy maintenance/grooming *not massively energetic *may enjoy playing fetch *not a Labrador/golden retriever (too big, too boisterous) *not a greyhound "pretty" is a bonus available to go offlead running on a farm with the kids playing around - sociable with other dogs - less likely to take off for hours after a rabbit. someone is home 70% of the time always, though there will be times where it will need to be alone. Kids are at school, both parents work - in and out of the home. I straight away thought of cavalier, and it is on the top of their list, but as they have people preaching about the benefits of hybrid vigor and cross bred mutts, I thought it best to help them with a list of pedigree dogs that may fit the bill. I know some of the requirements are based on training rather than breed, but I thought I would add all the factors. As I don't l know the temperaments of all breeds - if you list a breed - please tell me why you think it would fit this family as I think it would greatly assist. Or somewhere I can read up on the breed to get an idea of suitability. I want to make a list for the mother so she can sit down and read a bit about the breeds suggested and then do some further research. THANKYOU ;)
  24. and yet, if that "poor flattie" bit a child, we'd hear no end of the fact a rescue organisation rehomed an aggressive dog and they obviously didn't temp test properly, were useless in their after sales help, and should be shut down because they allowed an aggressive dog to be released. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. What's to say their behaviourist found significant issue in the dogs behaviour that was risky and inappropriate for a dog that was to be adopted. You say you have not spoken to the trainer. There may have been major issues. All dogs are capable of sever aggression. Flatties are not immune to temperament issues. Some that may even become apparent in a rescue situation and kenneling.
  25. I have used scented baby wipes on my pets Figure if they are safe enough to put on a baby's face (and subsequently sucked on by said baby), then any of my pets can be exposed to them.
