Art and craft, making the best of life and giving all I can to the things that matter most to me.....family , friends and four legged friends and other animals
  1. Hi Guys. I was wondering wether you might be able to help my mother. 8 years ago, we adopted a chihuahua from the animal welfare league. He is now to the best of our knowledge about 15 years old, and still a very lively dog. Recently he had terrible allergy problems with his skin, and was diagnosed after a blood test with pancreatitus. He was never fed (by us) sausages or food scraps, but simply fed dry food in the morning and canned food at night. Now, my mum has been advised to feed him Hills L/D Prescription diet, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any other feed alternatives as my mum's dog isd getting fussy and not really liking it much. I know he probably doesn't have many years ahead of him, but my mum does love him very dearly, and wants him to have the best life ahead of him. Do you guys have any suggestions on food alternatives appropriate for pancreatitus, and or a bulk supplier for Hills L/D? I have scowered the net, and am yet to find a bulk supplier of the canned L/D!!! Thanks a million in advance. All advice would be appreciated!
  2. Thanking you. I hope it isn't as full on, but at the moment they seem to get along fine. Mum is establishing that she is the alpha dog, but other than that they are fine. I was also wondering wether anyone has suggestions about removing burrs from dogs hair? I am concerned about his excited weeing, but is that a normal experience for puppy owners? Please everyone, let me know Thanking everyone so much CHarene
  3. Well yes. I have a busy household. A hubby who works 12 hour days, and a 21/2 year old and a 9 month old...very very busy. BUt I hope this arrangement will work out Thanking you
  4. I don't know wether they were fighting or not? any ideas on how to identify it? She is desexed, he is not. He pees excitedly, but is there any way of fixing it? They are not growling at eachother. I only have the 2. Mum came pregnant to me, and I raised her pups and her, and then it was jus her for the last 6 months or so.
  5. Well, my dog had puppies back in april of this year, and we passed the 2 pups onto family. My father in law is no longer able to care for him, and he hasn't seen his mum since leaving the pack back in july. What is the best way to reaquaint? How can I be fair to both of them? At the moment they are rustling around, no growling or anything, but is this fighting or playing? He is very intelligent, but has a problem, when he gets excited, he has a loss of bladder control...not a full wee, but a little wee. Should I put htem into the same room to sleep tonight? Any other thoughts and help is appreciated Thanking you Charene
  6. Sorry, she is a terrier X. I presume a wire haired terrier x.
  7. Thank you showdog, I missed your entry before typing my last one. I do agree that I did keep her alive, and in all honesty, despite the vet persuading me to keep her rather than putting her down, I don't know wether I could have done it anyway. I do agree it will be harder to find her a home, and a good home at that, however, I don't think I am the good home that she needs. Because of not knowing the full extent of her disorder, I am going to see if people will be able to give me any numbers of "special homes" for her, as, I don't feel my house can accomodate her. With a 2 year old son, and a new one, plus the mum dog, amoungst our aquariumed friends, it is alot for me to handle.........I am still tossing up the idea of keeping any of them......it is my mind tangling with my heart, and I want to keep her, and all of them, but know I can;t provide the time, and needs for the bobbly one nor all of them together like i would love to do. Thank you for your time Showdog
  8. Thank you for your advice Bellas person. I am having to face the hard decision of either putting down the disabled dog, or finding her a good special home/rescue until I can find her a home. I don't have the time to dedicate to her, and her needs. I love her very dearly, but I need to consider whether it would be cruel to keep her, and wether it would be unfair to keep her any longer for our families sake(but we are all so attatched to them all at this point in time) I wish I knew the extent of her neurological disorder, but all I know is that she falls over every 10 steps, and she is always bobbling along. The vet can't say either. I just can't chance the fact that she is going to get better/worse....I know she is getting better everyday, which is why it is heartbreaking, but, I have my 2 children, and my husband to care for as well.............I hope I make the right, and least cruel decison on all concerned. If only I had known My mum dog was pregnant I would have been better prepared. But I didn't because I only got her 3 weeks before she had the pups, so, I can only do what is best for them now. I hope my heart leads me to the right decision. Charene
  9. Please help, all opinions needed. My dog, had puppies only 2 days after I had my 2nd child. I only got her 3 weeks before I had my baby, so she was obviously pregnant, but I never knew. Now, they are 5 weeks old, and I have no idea which out of the 3 to choose. 1 of them has a bit of a wobble which is neurological.....not enough to warrant me putting her down though, as she is getting better every day......the one I like for looks and alertness is gorgeous, and the biggest of teh group is so affectionate and is beautiful too. I don't want to give any of them away, but I know that I need to. I love the little one that has problems, but don't want to keep her if I can't accomodate her needs, I don't want to put her down because she is getting better....my fear is that I will give the pups away, and keep the little bobbly one, and have her pass on, or the vet say she isn't doing well.......any ideas guys??? I know your a brainy bunch so please help..I love them all so much, and I am already heartbroken knowing I have to give one away. Charene
  10. What you will find with most Vet provided foods is that they will provide a guide on the side of the package...even with alot of canned foods.....Science diet springs to mind.....unless of course you are doing a raw food diet in that case about 400g of meat to my knowldge should do them. As far as your little one whining goes....like most people have replied...he is just getting to know you, his environment etc, and he is probably missing his mum. Radio is good, and it could even be the cold weather..(hot water bottles only keep heat for about an hour. Worming still needs to take place every 2 weeks until 3 months old. thevetshed.com.au has great prices on worming things....much cheape than vets. You should require a vet check at 8 weeks for vaccinating, and then at 12 weeks again. Then every year from there out. get a c5 if you plan on schooling/bording your dog at any age, and a c3 if not....it is just a little cheaper. heart worming needs to be done from 3 months onward....and how often depends on brand.(you ca get daily ones too.) you can also opt for an injection for heart worm that covers you for a whole year. it costs about 70 dollars. hope this helps charene
  11. I just thought I'd let those of you who replied to the thread that the puppy has definitely got a brain disorderm however the vet has stated that she doesn't feel it is serious enough at this stage to put her down. She feels that until 8 weeks, that the puppy should have a chance to develop more, and because she has some brain trauma, it may just mean that she will be slower at developing...not necessarily a permanent thing what she has now. They are terrier x's:) Thanks Charene
  12. I don't think I will lose the others...They are really stable:) They are 4 weeks old now, and it is relaly just the little girl who I am worried about. She is very clingy to me, and 1 of her brothers. The first one passed on ? I don't know why, but, when I first found out she had had pups, it was already gone(only in a 6 hour space between last seeing her and seeing her with pups) and the 2nd one, the following morning...suspected to be rejected by mum.......(was out of the basket!) and the third one, I had booked in to the vet for the next day, because it was husky in its grunts, and that night, it passed on, after me getting up and suplement feeding it, and getting advice from vet!...we are now down to what I believe to be the stable 2 and 1 ?......vet is coming out tomorrow night.....I just want to be mentally prepared for the worst I guess, as much as it sounds horrible.....but, if the vet says that her quality of life wont be hindered, just that she is going to be a bit wobbly, I will look after her:) Thanks for your advice:) Charene
  13. Hi guys....need some help.... My Dog had pups 4 weeks ago now, and she started out with 6, but have whittled down to 3....(1 was already gone when born) But now I have come down to these 3, I am noticing one is acting very strange. She is bobbling her head everywhere like she can't keep it up, and also she walks and then all of a sudden rolls over...........any thoughts? any suggestions? it isn't her legs as I have tested all of them...and as her pregnancy wasn't known of until the pups were born maybe she was just born like this, maybe she was in teh sac for too long...but what my main question is............Should I be expecting the vet to say put her down? Just need to mentally prepare myself, as I have helped hand rear this pup for the last 2 weeks. Please help, all suggestions taken into account:) Thanking you all Charene
  14. Thank you all so very much for your advice. I do take this very seriously, and will be in touch with a behaviouralist. Like I said, it doesn't seem malicious, just trying to protect her things I think, but I can't take any chances, but in my heart I can't give her back or away again either. As I do have another one on the way in 2 weeks, it is fairly full on, and with a new one around, you can never be too careful. Will check the yellow pages for behaviouralists....thanking you all, Charene. (I think it is also harder to know with rehomed dogs, as you don't know exactly what type of past they have had. She tends to cower when a voice is raised, and when you go to put her lead on her, she cowers too..... I am presuming mayba na abusive past. She was saved from Renbury farm on the 2nd of March, and I adopted her from K9 companions. I trust Carole's judgement 100%, and feel that we might just havea behavious hiccup here, nothing too major:))
