Irritable Bowel

 Share

Recommended Posts

My boy (dog) has been diagnosed with Irritiable Bowel  and i was hoping other dol's who have had the misfortune of dealing with this problem can give me some advise on diet.

He has not been put on any medication as we want to try and manage it with diet.

Thanks in advance

Hi SD I have a boy with IBD and have been managing for 2 years without medication. Would be happy to answer questions but I'm off interstate for work tomorrow for a few days. PM me some questions if you like and I'll reply when I get back.

You could always try him on some probiotics or slippery elm is also meant to work well, and moderate his intake of rich and fatty foods. If he's a kibble eater there are also some made to help with digestive problems.

How was the diagnosis made? There are two types of bowel complaints; 1) Irritiable Bowel Syndrome and;2) Inflammatory Bowel Disease( this one is diagnosed by endoscopy with biopsies taken, I know as i have had a Collie with Severe IBD).

IBD is usually managed by steriods at first to ge the inflammation down then dietary alterations. Irriitable Bowel Syndrome is usually just dietary changes

I suffer from Inflammatory Bowel Disease myself- it is a life long condition and you will get flare-ups( i had had 2 in 4 mths , being hospitalised on both occasions)

Send Charles Kuntz a PM- he is a Specialist Vet Surgeon and very helpful

First thing to remove is the very thing that dogs aren't built to digest - grains.

As far as I know Orijen is the only dry food that doesn't contain grains. Better still (and cheaper) feed your dog on what nature intended - a bone and raw food diet.

Until Orijen gets fresh, raw food into a bag it will be a poor second.

Inflammatory bowel disease is conditions such as Ulcerative Colitis and Chrohns disease. They are autoimmune disorders.

Irritable bowel disease is due to liver overload/gut sensitivity and is easily controlled with diet (easy for those who can cut out the foods which are irritating it).

IBD is also known to be inherited in Humans

I agree with BL- get your dog on a raw diet with minced chicken(about$1kg from the chicken shop) and vegies that have been pulped( I use carrots, celery, alfafa, parsely and a hint of garlic) plus they also get a chicken carcass daily.

My boy (dog) has been diagnosed with Irritiable Bowel  and i was hoping other dol's who have had the misfortune of dealing with this problem can give me some advise on diet.

Springdog ... get in contact with Dr. Bruce Syme - Vet in Castlemain (inventor of "Vets All Natural" foods and supplies).

One of the ailments my avatar girl who passed a couple of years ago (bless her cotton socks ... ) had to deal with was IBS. I ended up consulting with Dr. Bruce and he gave me a really good diet for me to put together (ie not a commercial product). It was a long (although pleasant) trip (2.5 hours) for me, but I considered his consultation well worth it. This remedied her IBS really well. She was on no other medication for it. At least enquire with him.

One thing though - I believe there is a somewhat large difference between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Irritable Bowel Disease. Can't remember rightly enough to be sure, nor can I recall the difference. But it might be worth checking up on and if I'm right, knowing which your girl has.

My boy has medically diagnosed (endosocopy, colonoscopy) eosinophilic IBD. Orijen might be grain free but its also a mix of a like 4 or 5 proteins all of which he is intolerant too. I've managed his IBD for 2 years since diagnosis with a home made roo, zucchini, carrot and yogurt diet. He also gets extra probiotics daily as well as antihistamines for his atopic allergies. Any flare ups are treated with Metrogyl.

Springdog- you may have firmed up his stools but from personal experience you need to have an accurate diagnosis as to whether it is Irritable Bowel Syndrome or Inflammatory Bowel Disease. I have recently spent nearly 2 weeks in hospital with a flare-up of IBD, it is a life-long chronic condition that needs to be monitored by specialists, Human or Animal
