Dog Socialisation - Sydney (inner West)

Hiya

I have been in Oz for about 18 months now and in that whole time my big dog Barney has not met any new dogs (neither has wee girl Pippi).

Unfortunately both dogs seem to suffer from lead aggression or perhaps over excitement that turns into aggression???

Anyway, Barney has always been fine introducing new dogs to him in our back yard or at other peoples places (goes all big and puppy like - quite funny) and it almost seems like as a result of this his lead aggression has become worse (Pippi has been like this since day dot and will even do it if she sees her own reflection in a window).

I would really like to work on this with them, with someone who has a dog and might have the patience to sit there with me (but separate initially) while my dogs go absolutely bananas (they are also not the most well behaved dogs on the planet as a general rule LOL). Obviously the idea would be that with doing this regularly they would eventually phase out of it and we would progress to off lead plays (though Barney is generally fine with this - or has been in the past).

As a plus side for myself, I am also kind of hoping to make a friend or two as Barney is not the only one who hasnt met anyone new. Since we (me, man and kid) have been here, I have not made any friends and would like to make some but havent been sure where to start. Was thinking maybe a shared love of dogs might be a good starting point.

Anyway, just kind of chucking it out there to see if anyone might be willing to help, totally understand if noone is interested as naughty angry dogs arent particularly fun for anyone and particularly people other than their owners LOL.

FYI: Dogs are a 5 year old male entire lab x, and a 1 year old desexed foxy/shih tzu mix....and I am a 30 year old female (not desexed).

Where abouts in sydney are you? I would be happy to help out with Indie, hes an extremly laid back Siberian Husky. He just sits down and ignores other dogs when they are "going bananas". Bonnie, umm, yeah, Ill be leaving her at home as she "goes bananas" at other dogs "going bananas" lol.

Heya

Yea LOL at goes bananas.

I live in Five Dock...Indie sounds like he could be a fantastic "role model" for my dogs. Particularly the larger one as he is my biggest concern due to his size. He is a lovely lovely sooky boy. And we have never had any trouble off lead introducing him to new dogs but just on lead he is a twat (to put it simply) LOL.

We would love some help if youd be willing!

Would it be possible to get a dog trainer to help?

It may also help if you got the Lab desexed.

I think the behaviour is habitual now so desexing may not have any effect. This is something we have thought about and talked to the vet about.

I think the behavior is more based in excitement at the idea of a "new mate" and he just gets himself worked up into a frenzy...dont know if losing his balls would help lol
