Dog park discussion unleashed for public comment

Off the leash ... Canberrans are being asked to comment on the location of a new dog park.

Three sites have been identified as the potential homes for a new $300,000 northside dog park.

The selected sites are in Russell, O'Connor and North Lyneham - and the public is being asked to comment on their suitability.

There are already four off-leash dog parks in the ACT - in Gungahlin, Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Yarralumla.

Three locations have been identified.

Territory and Municipal Services design and development manager Diana Hill said the existing parks were very popular and there was increasing demand for more.

Advertisement "The three potential sites have been chosen for their suitability against the ACT Government's dog park selection criteria including easy access, parking opportunities, ability to securely fence the site, provision of water, shade and an interesting terrain for dogs and their owners to enjoy," she said.

"The new inner-north dog park will feature separate enclosures for small and big dogs, access for all users, seating, a bubbler and water sources for dogs."

Ms Hill said socialising and exercising dogs was critical to their training.

"The new dog park will increase accessibility to safe and secure off-leash spaces for northside residents and their dogs," she said.

The Russell site is in Grevillea Park off Menindee Drive; the O'Connor site is an open space area enclosed by Barry Drive, Fairfax Street and Dryandra Street and North Lyneham is an open space area located off Ellenborough Street.

All proposed sites are able to accommodate a fenced dog park of about 1.3 hectares.

For more details go to visit www.timetotalk.act.gov.au where an online survey asks people to rank the suitability of the selected sites. Hardcopy surveys are also available at any public library or Canberra Connect shopfront.

The consultation closes at 5pm on January 11

Thanks.. I like the idea of one at Russell (close to us in Queanbeyan than the other two sites)...

I wish Queanbeyan would look at more suitable parks or at least fix the new one... There is hardly any grass, its all rock and rubble underfoot and it was built in an area with no mature trees (so they had to plant a heap) - no shade..

Don't get me wrong, I am thankful we have it - I just wish it was a bit better than it is.

I think it's really hard to maintain grass in any of them, Belco is just dirt in the middle, most used part. There is still grass around the edges, I think because 1. The edges don't get run on as much and 2. It's more shaded.

I've always thought the Qbn park looked so hot all the times, without any trees! (never been there with the dogs).

A lot of people take their dogs to an unofficial play area in O'Connor already from what I've heard. I'm not sure whether that means it would be good to have an official park there or whether it would be more useful somewhere else

There is a couple of other places we can take them here but they are not fenced...

The park at the Scar is dirt and burrs.. It is hot up there, you have to go early or late to miss the hot sun.

The one at yarralumla is the best I have been to... It is just like they have fenced off a wooded area..
