Toilet Shy Puppy

I have a fun one here..

I'm currently trying to toilet train my 10wk old Pap. I'm using pee pads and the housebreaking scent. He mostly goes on the pad. However, not when I'm around!

We just went for a big walk. Well, it was only a block, but the biggest walk he's had so far. We came back inside and I put him on the pad and said "Pepper, toilet!"

Well... nothing, for about 10min. Which is fine, I know it can take a while. But I stepped out of the pen for a second and I turn around and he's squatted on a towel! I pick him up and carry him back to the pad but he's decided that he's finished now that I'm back in there with him and he'll sit next to me and look at what I'm looking at.

After all that... Question - How do I reinforce the good toilet behaviour and give it a name if he wont go when I can see it?

ps. I did some 'sit' training with him yesterday and he's much quicker to stop crying now.

Purely out of curiosity, and I apologise if I've missed earlier info, is there a specific reason you're training him on the piddle pads?

Do you have a garden with any lawn or dirt/sand/garden bed?

The piddle pads, in my opinion, actually teach them to go to the toilet in the house. If you are home quite a bit (it sounds like you are?), making regular trips outside is by far the best way to go...

You probably just need to be patient with her :mad

She's only 10 weeks old so it might take a while......

I took me a couple of months to toilet train Chelsea with the same kind of problem but I did get there it just took some time....

Every time your pup wakes up, eats or finishes playing take her to the wee pad give her the command and keep trying. Put her back there if she wanders away. When she does do it in the right place praise her and give her a treat so she learns that by doing a wee there she will get a yummy treat!!

It will work eventually but you will have to keep at it for while )

I successful toilet trained two dogs to go on a wee pad on a balcony in my unit, it was hard work and probably took a bit longer but it did work!!

I'm actually not home that often. I took some leave from work so that I could get him started on the toilet training and get the socialising done early.

When I do work I work 12hr shifts for 4 days.

He's a strange little boy, and a total dag! I'll keep going with the pads, I just hope he'll go when i can see him so I can praise. It's just good to hear I'm not the only owner of a 'modest dog'

Thanks

Modest dog? :D My BC Jake would take the cake in that department! He would go behind the shed to do a poo and if anyone walked within eyesight he would stop what he was doing and run, in an arkward manner with his back still arched and back legs still spread, further around the corner! Made me laugh everytime!
