E: K9:its very simple, instead of rewarding your dog for playing & being nice you reward it for ignoring & coming back. You need to think in tersm of numbers, if your dogs shys away, from a person, that person may give food etc, to raise the association from negative to zero.. K9: you certainly wouldnt need to Neutralise a dog to scent that you want to track, but its not the scent the dogs love so much, its the satisfaction of the find... You can easily control that. -
How about, in case someone needs to search it later, we have a topic for this subject..? I use prey drive for a lot of obedience, sport & bitework, it's a high energy drive that can, in the right dog, be channeled very effectively to gain outstanding results. The requirements are good nerves, good prey drive & very little in the way of fear based issues... Training in drive isnt for couch potatoes be it people or dogs, it takes a lot of physical activity & you have to be committed to carry out the complete program if you want complete results. There have been many questions on this, so lets talk about it here.

S: K9: maybe he is concentrating hard on riding the bike? lol.. Probably means that he has no time to focus on a dog in the small amount of time he has to keep up with the bike. The bike will not give him prey drive satisfaction. -

YB: K9: gotcha, I personally think a dog working in prey is best at everything, but as a general rule, any static excercises, sits drops etc can be great in food drive, send aways, retrieves etc, I would say prey drive is way better. E: K9: you see this doesnt happen, in this program the dog has only ever met dogs that have ignored him or her until now, so your dog wont be looking for play, like your dog wont be looking for play in the park bench, new dogs mean the same. K9: when your dog returns to you reward... K9: what I expect to see is, dog comes running up, my job is to keep it away from my dog, Im the leader. So I do, say Im surprised, I dont see it I would expect my dog to sniff the other dog & walk away, as soon as I see my dog decide to walk off, I mark with yes, then praise... K9: if my dog did start to show some interest, I would leash guide the dog back to me, mark when the dog turns & praise when he gets back. E: K9: you have to realise, you can never go back, once your dog has allocated a value, either negative or positive to somethimng, your stuck with it, obedience or desesitization can change what your dog does about that value... E: K9: Beagles arent designed to sniff other dogs.. lol.. you dont remove the sniff desire, but reward it with things yopu have the dog sniff... A: K9: it will be dependant on his nerves & his drives, strong nerved dog with high threshold to defence would just give the other dog a look. My male GSD will do that often, just raise his head as if to say "piss off". E: K9: yes if he shows other than slight interest... A: K9: there is no command, dog walks down the street, other dog coming other way, dog will walk by with maybe a 1 second glance... -

YB: K9: is there a need for prey drive? If your getting good focus with food then unless you have high energy excercises, shouldnt really need prey. -
K9: when you organise it...lol..

V: K9: ahhh I make it up as I go along lol... V: K9: yes, in fact its the only measure... Sometimes, although this may be a little unrealted to your dog, we have a do come here because it wont go forward & bite, sometimes caused by the dog being agitated when wearing a thin collar or check for eg. The dog has limited its drive as it knows going into full drive will earn it a correction, be it automatic due to wrong equipment. I put a 2 inch wide leather collar on or leather harness & bungy. Then I fustrate the dog, it still wont advance until the frustration becomes so high that drive elecates & the dog launches at me into the harness & bungy, when the dog see's no correction was gained, problem goes away. So it took frustration to elevate drive, yes there was howling, barking, spinning on the circle, & finally a lunge, which ended in a bite, this giving the dog the satisfaction it required. -

V : K9: sorry Vickie if I offended you wa sjust trying tyo give you an idea of what it is like inside your dog, motor straining to go, mind holding it back. V: K9: it will be affected onlyu if the dog is trembling as her nerves are turned on, if she is relaxed with an adrenaloin flow, possibly making her wait can elevate her drive through anticipation or frustration. -

E: K9: Any one that has met my GSDs will tell you how many full sentences they understand, they listen very carefully to what I say, it makes for my idea of a dog very close to human intelligence. E: K9: whilst we are blubbering lol, I got a 14month old GSD bitch from Cordy, nice looking dog. Starved to the point that normally she would be a 32kg dog, she was about 11kgs when I got her. First 7 months of life in breeders cage, next 7 months with abusive man who beat her & starved her. She was messed up... Each time I looked at her, even though after steriods she began to eat, & put on weight, I felt saddened a good dog was ruined. But occasionally, she wouldnt notice anyone there, & would spot a rabbit, her prey drive would kick in & she would take flight, I cant think of a more beautiful picture of her in full prey drive, down our paddock like a bullet... It took about 18 months, but she came up very well, she will never be the dog she was bred to be, but her quality of life was returned. She would run to me, jump up into my arms in the end... All this with the use of electronics.... I would be happy to take a look at her Erny, there are just some things I cant explain how to do, but watching makes them clear. -

V: K9: its not idling, its stopped with one foot on the brake, the other hard on the gas. V: K9: I think when the dog has not been taught to relax in drive, it deminshes drive, turns on nerves & this causes many types of fallout, weak grips, chewing dumbells etc.. -

K9: my program for SA requires very little change from the person, & has been successful on 95% of the dogs I have prescribed it for... First your dog needs to be correctkly diagnosed, then I would be giving an indication on the severity, then work out where you start in the program. -

LL: K9: some dogs get turned on nerves through frustration, it coukd be this.... PJ: K9: I watch & see dogs in drive, some not... PJ: K9: not when you look at the rest of the body language that goes with it. PJ: K9: they may say that, but it would tell me they cant read dogs. PJ: K9: avoidance = negative value, neutral couldnt care less. PJ: K9: I will demo it for you at workshop, tke 2 seconds to see... -

YB: K9: many dogs are the same... YB: K9: putting him in higher drive will help him overcome fear as he wont be focussed on what he fears, rather the toy, if yoi get 50% of his attention on the toy, thts only 50% he has left, you have halfed the problem at this point in training... YB: K9: singular dogs are easy to focus on... -

K9: thats right! On the movements... You can pick up a lot from the way a dog eats & goes outside... When we have a client that has a dog thats defesive tward its owner, that means afraid, I give them the TOT program & ask them to tell me when the dog starts running straight to the food rather than past it & eats whilst watching them. This tells me the dog now truats them, can go into food drive, which means out of defence. Going outside works the same way. -
