  1. Thank you Everyone :)

Its been almost 2 weeks since he came to live with us. He's happy enough but he does get a little excited when he hears a car or he will go to the front door every so often. Mornings seems the time he's been fretting.

I love that he has a very friendly gentle nature and gets on with our other 2 especially young Miah. Doesn't pick on the cats either, he leaves them alone.

I've been touching base with his former owner with updates and pics on fb, which she looks fwd too. Shes missing him but still wants to know how he is going. She loved him very much and that is obvious,

He will have a very good life with us. He loves sleeping on our bed at nights too biggrin.gif

  2. Toby is just lovely :) I am glad Miah now has a playmate .... what great news for you all!

Thank you Pers. Its funny how when you not looking something like this happens. :)

    Awe, sweet..

They are a very pretty dog..

Thank you Stafyluv, he's not as pretty in the way Joey and Renae have been, but his temperament is exceptional :)

Damn it! I'm having little tearies here

I was a mess also the day his owner brought him here and left. (I tried to disguise my emotions) Poor lady it was very hard for her. We bought her some beautiful flowers to take home with her. It was the day before Mother's Day.

  3. We have added a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to our family in The Love Shack :)

We certainly weren't looking for another one, its been far from our minds especially since Joey sadly left our lives last Sept. But out of the blue about a month ago, a friend of ours messaged me to say one of her co workers was looking to rehome her Cav to the right person/people and could I keep my eyes and ears open if I knew of anyone. Her friend was rehoming him as a last option and because of genuine circumstances.I contacted this lady, and it turned out she lives quite close to us, which I wasn't expecting. I told her (a couple weeks later) would it be ok to come and meet her and her Cav. I had a chat to hubby about it in the meantime and said lets just go look at him and check out his temperament at the least. I wasn't really serious at the time, and thought at least if i know what he's like, that will help me with finding someone to take him on.

As soon as Toby met us, he was super friendly and made friends with us straightaway. We know most Cavs are friendly but we did not expect him to take to us like he did.We went away, still not sure if to consider taking him on. I'm a great believer in fate and timing. We sent emails back and forth to his owner asking questions etc. We also didn't want to rush her, and we didn't want to rush into it either. We eventually made our decision we would take him provided how our other 2 took to him. Renae is almost 12 and has been feeling her age lately and does get quite stressed now, so we didn't want to put too much pressure on her as that wouldn't be fair. They all got on really well when they met, especially Miah. He's 4 so still quite playful. We have had him for a week now and he's settling in very well. He's still pining for his former owner from time to time, but thats to be expected, as she loved him heaps and this has been an extremely difficult thing for her to do. She's on fb so still gets to see lots of pics of him and is happy that he's settling in with us.Renae's been really good with him, thought she might have gotten grumpy with him at times, but so far so good. Miah's nose is a bit out of joint but she's really enjoying that he plays with her .There's a few minor things that need working on but his beautiful temperament makes up for everything. We still miss Joey a lot, he would have been 10 tomorrow, but we are very blessed to have both Toby and Miah come into our lives. Three is our limit.

We were given him and his former owner even made sure he had all his vaccinations up to date and was given a general health check before she brought him to us. He's desexed and microchipped ;)

  4. Hi ro11 :) sorry about your loss last year frown.gif

Its a question most of us ponder over.

In our case we had our name with a breeder for some time for a puppy, and our way of thinking was also that we would have her to keep one of our Cavaliers company when the other older one passed away ( she had been having health issues) and thought it would be a good way to adjust the remaining one to life without his Mother when the time came.

Later (after Miah came into our lives) Unexpectedly and without much warning the older Cavalier's son 'Joey' became very ill and within a couple months had to be given his wings. It was highly suspected he had a brain tumour crying.gif We didn't see that coming. So our Miah came along at the right time not only to comfort us, but also Joey's Mother Renae. She has helped heaps with it all. Not that anything can replace our Joey but shes certainly been a blessing.

Anyway that was all in 2013 ( We lost Joey last September)

We haven't even been thinking about getting another dog, its actually been the last thing on our minds. But fate stepped in recently and a friend told me about a cavalier that the owner was looking to rehome to the right person, and could i keep my eyes and ears open.

Hubby and I casually thought we would go and meet this cavalier and his owner, only because they lived close to us ( which was a sign). We met him and he had a very good temperament . We thought long and hard over a few weeks if we should take him on. The owner brought him to our place one weekend to see if he got along with our 2 cavs and he did.

Well last Sat he came to live with us biggrin.gif

I'm a strong believer in fate, and always think when the timing is right, it will just happen one way or another. Having said that our limit has always been 3 Cavs at a time,

Your heart will tell you if you are ready or not.

We also had a similar thing happen when we were given Renae (many years ago), we already had Joey (her son) and another dog that I had for years (a red heeler x kelpie). She got cancer and had to be given her wings. A few months down the track Joey's breeder offered us Renae.

    Please keep us updated x

  5. That's very reassuring! The breed we're looking at is Miniature Schnauzer. I'm trying very hard to not get too excited because I worry that it won't work out for some reason.

I love kelpies (my relatives are farmers and have always had kelpies) but we really, really don't have the lifestyle for a kelpie. Miah looks beautiful - I just want to scratch her under her chin.

Thank you Bec, I've only just seen your reply in here. She's not that tiny anymore. She will be 2 this Nov ! Still beautiful heart.gif

I do hope your search works out and you find a lovely MS . It's all in the timing I believe :)

  6. How exciting Bec ! ;)

Quite a few breeders will choose the most suitable puppy for you and your family.

We never requested which sex we would prefer altho deep down I really hoping for a female. The breeder asked us if we wanted the female once she had made her final decisions about them. The only request we had was that it had to be a Tri colour puppy (which is why we choose the breeder we did anyway)

When we met our little girl, she was the only one that didn't want to come up and cuddle and spend time with us, she was off doing her own thing away from the security of the others laugh.gif I was bit embarrassed and worried the breeder might decide she didn't take to us and choose another one for us, All the others were very cuddly with us Thank God that didn't happen and we still got Miah.

Miah is growing into most beautiful very independent, outgoing, confident and full of life (and love) young Cavalier. She has an exceptional temperament. We get told that a lot.

She did let us have a cuddle tho before we left at our first meet with her ;)

  7. I have quite a few friends on facebook (that are members on here also) that own Cocker Spaniels. They post regularly about them with lots of photos. Its all been very positive to me seeing and reading about them over the years. smile.gif

I've met a few in my life and they have all come across as having lovely temperaments.

Every breed of dog produces varying personalities of course,

  8. I live in a country coastal town. We have mostly Staffys, kelpies, BC's. and lots of those type breeds in different mixes (especially Lab mixes). Many of them keep getting out tho and are found wandering around, over and over *sigh*

There seems to be quite a few cavadoodles around here.

Not so much designer breeds here but more your BYB dogs and 'accidental matings'

  9. Nature provides the canvas, and nurture provides the paint... that's how I see it anyways. You can go all Pro Hart and get a big ass mess - or you can go Leonardo Da Vinci and get something unique and beautiful.

    T.

Miah's breeder more or less said the same thing to us when she handed Miah over to us... I hope we are painting a really beautiful and unique canvas with her. We have been complimented a fair bit on her temperament so far biggrin.gif

I have owned dogs all my life but Miah is the first one I've had from as a young Puppy; )

  10. One thing I forgot to ask about these breeds of dogs are any of them known barkers as I'd prefer to avoid dogs that have a tendency to bark alot as I've lived next to people that have dogs that bark all day and I would hate to do that to my new neighbours.

    Thanks again :)

Mine have had their yapping moments, but I'm at home most days, all day, so if they yap at something, unless they are letting me know there's strangers around, I tell tell them to be quiet. Our almost 12 year old does yap more than she used too, but i think its because she's deaf and she probably thinks it hers way of getting our attention. With her i put my finger near my lips to tell her to sshhh

They do carry on when we first leave them to go out somewhere and when we come back home, but in between they are fairly quiet. We skype video them so we can hear that they are not being too noisy.

Our young one hasn't been too noisy, but she does have a high pitch shrill howling sound on her when she can see my husband out the back doing something and she wants to be with him. I do correct her when she does it.

I think with every breed of dog, some are going be quiet individuals and others are going be noisy ones.

You will find that if dogs are barking too much, there's usually something going on thats setting them off eg they are bored etc

  11. I love Cavaliers and will always own them :)

Yes they can be prone to a few different genetic health issues, but there's no guarantees with any breed of dog for perfect health. Obviously with any breed you are intending on choosing, make sure you are aware of any of their known health issues and look into good breeders that try their best to keep their lines healthy ( as can be)

One of ours Renae is almost 12. We did have her son until last year. He had just turned 9 but had developed an aggressive brain tumour (which came on completely out of the blue within a few months) He had been very healthy otherwise till then and was still heart clear. It was just one of those things that could have happened to any breed of dog.frown.gif

We have a young Cav who will be 2 this Nov, shes been fairly hardy so far , has been to the vet for a couple things but not really for breed related issues. She loves everything and everyone and nothing fazes her. Has an exceptional temperament :)

Like most breeds of dogs, Cavs can have their own different personalities, but they should be friendly, outgoing and happy.

More detailed info about them can be found in the 101 dog breeds section of DOL :)

  12. We are going through a similar thing with Renae, altho not quite at that point you are at yet Kirslin ..

Our Renae is almost 12 and has had some health issues over the last year and half. Most of them are just old age related. Without putting her through a lot more tests, we really can't tell how bad things are with her. Her general blood work is ok.

She is starting to go a bit senile now, and theres times she shakes a lot and has these little head nodding fits and looks like shes going fall down (she doesn't), but shes not incontinent yet and still walks around ok. There's times i think shes getting stiff, then other days she springs up onto the couch /our bed like shes a puppy!

So we are just taking it day by day and just making sure she's fairly comfortable and not in any real distress.

When she starts getting more immobile or can't go to the toilet properly by herself, then we will reassess the situation.

I always hope if she does go it be peacefully in her sleep, as she sleeps a lot now.

So i kind of know the feeling about as our dogs are getting older and not quite themselves anymore

I think you will know when the time comes what to do. It usually shows in their eyes *hugs* x

  13. I must say i was impressed at Miah's 1st birthday party last year. All her canine guests were Cavaliers except one small x breed terrier. They all included her into their circle that day, which was lovely to see. I think She might have gone home thinking she was a Cavalier tho laugh.gif
