  1. My problem child (myf 17 weeks) has the same problem. We dont tolerate it. I turn my back on her and do not communicate with her until she behaves appropriately...

As for food they have to sit before the bowls go down. Not sit, no food...

  2. Kamuz,

Thats why I have asked the question.... Done the searches and still not happy...

Im tend to run with dogs the same line with small kids, if it can block then windpipe then it is too small.. I cant x-ray every bone, but I do know the size of bones in shanks...

  3. Our Staffy crosses love, love, love lamb shanks, one of the best teething aids I have ever known...

thats funny, the staffy cross i grew up with had a shank everyday... nowdays i enjoy them too much to give em to the dogs!!

Roo, I sent you a PM... Cayenne is going great... I can't wait for her to get the whole toilet thing though, sure am sick of cleaning up wee!! it looks as though she consumed a few stones yesterday while eating her brisket so she's been a bit off colour today a couple of vomits but looks to be all good now... it'll be interesting to compare notes between brother and sister thats for sure... how is erik going with the toilet thing!!

The problem child (staffy/bully/Cattle x) is now finishing off the bone that the Kelpie/Amstaff polished all day, she is teething as we speal while the latter just had a fang removed and is in recovery.

never fed them necks of eithe lamb or chicken, concerned about the small bone factor... should I be concerned?

  4. Lola just had hers and she flew through it, no side effects at all.. she was off her food for a day, and one runny poo but that was it, she was back into it with the problem child and the 5YO.

Spoke to the vet about it, raised all the concerns (he hates it when I have questions.. ) and he has yet to have a dog with a major reaction and he dosent push it either... With all the mozzies we have around the lake here, im not taking any chances...

  5. Ohhhh, I want a dane. My BF's have a beautiful bitch and I want one of their puppies when she finally gets around to it...

Man what I would give to have a farm of my own, with all my favorite breeds all under one roof - it would be absolute bloody chaos.

I was told not to exercise giant breeds (apart from short walks etc) until their major growth pattern has ceased...

We dont run the working dogs full time until they are around 10 months...

  6. Our mastiff's can be lazy SOB's on the farm, when OH arrived there a year ago the Neo, Douge, English & the cross mutt would barely walk from their kennells to the back door of the house. Now they follow the quad bike wherever he goes, and the Douge goes on 10km runs with OH and looks amazing... Oh dear sometimes she looks frightening she is that fit, muscles rippling and that big head, something like a lion... she would lick you to death, that or sing you some opera !!!

Now when we start the quad up they get excited because they have something to do.. There have been times in the early days when they have gone down to the front gate (approx 2kms) and just sat there for hours, waiting for the car to come in so they could get a lift..

Hang in there.. just be grateful that dogs cant get addicted to the xbox !!

  7. Bath and then pick off the stunned fleas by hand, I do it with my cats and when the girls were small.. also gets them used to being picked over and to sit still, the still love it when they I do it when they get out of the bath... When they have cuts or grazes they are used to sitting still as we inspect and repair the wound...

We used revolution for puppies and Advantage plus (but we are in a tick area)..

  8. ohh my, takes me back when we brought Lola home for the first time.

She is just settling in.. like all babies make the most of it.

If the poos are good, the eating is happening and she is bright eyed and bushy tailed for the rest - relax and puppy proof the house because hold onto your hat, the next few weeks are going to be frantic..

When we broght Myf home she was traumatised from the pet shop and when we finally got her settled and sleeping she slept for nearly 3 days straight.. and then flew into being a puppy with a vengance..

    Hang in there...

  9. Jimmy congratulations on your puppy - where are the photos.

Basically everything Tony said... :D

We have a kelpie cross and she does does the heckles all the time, sometimes even when it is speaking to another dog across the street, but it is a warning sign..

Just rember to lead by example and be firm, fair and consistent and CONTROLLED.

We want some pics please, there are alot of kelpie tragics on here...

  10. Go the hand shower head/hose.

Myf hates the bath with still water but tolerates the warm shower hand holdie thing. She still sulks though.

Lola loves it.. sits and waits for her turn...

Mind you neither have a problem getting into the fish ponds....

  11. Congratulations on your new puppy !!! Firstly how old is it.

All I can recommend is be consistent with the biting and the toilet training, there are heaps of threads on here about that !!!

And remember it is a BABY and this is a really frightening and excting time for it.. so persevere. Is there anyway you could get leave for a couple of days to help him settle in??

A nice tranined obedient beagle? Ahhh might be a little while yet. :D

  12. Leash is for walkies.. not for naughties !!!!

Lola used to like to hold the lead in her mouth, we just let her do it until she worked out it is much more fun to walk out front than hang about on a lead... She sees her lead come out and it is RAPTURES !!!!

Myf still hates having her collar/harness put on, but she has just learned to 'walk on' and 'come back' and going to get the 5YO from school is now becoming FUN !!!

All I can say is persevere..

  13. Just spoke with my Sister in Law and she told me that their 16 year old Rotty Saxon had passed over to the other side of the fence on Tuesday.. At home, in his sleep and in his favorite place.

In my 9 years with the family Saxon was the staple dog, who got me over my fear of rotties and showed me that a BIG dog was also a nice dog. Bye Bye Saxon... RIP

  14. Good to hear that your dog is better, cant give you canine advice, but we do have a 18 year old cat and she has similar problems from time to time, particularly with changes of weather, there are days when I think she has finally bought it and then there are others where she is fine. She has dementia, still calls for our cat that died from mouth cancer last April. She has a large mass in her belly, but three different vets seem to think that removal of it isnt going to do her much good and it is not causing her any pain at this point in time. Old animals are funny little things, just give her a cuddle and make her comfortable.. I still miss Raz every single day...

  15. Like everyone said it's what your individual dog does well on. I have a friend with a black lab, full of energy, shiny, shiny black coat, never sick, perfect weight. My OH was so impressed with it's condition he asked what it was fed. Owner laughed ;) and said PAL.

PAL here as well, same sort of comments - well PAL and then whatever we are eating or whatever we wanted to eat and was on the griller (dogs out of the house).

Never had a problem with it.. as I am suburb bound, thats all I can get home delivered at this point in time.

Dogs are healthy, good weight, nice stools and never off their food..

  16. Our mutts love tuna steak .. that is when they get near the 18yo Cats bowl (a big no no  ;) ), then there is anything that they can reach from the floor or counter.

Lola is smart, she has worked out how to push a dining chair over to the counter in order to steal a BBQ chicken, all in the time it took me to see a family in the office.. Bloody working dog smarts .. ;)

  17. C7 is only useful for certain areas .

I wouldnt be using it as dogs can react to Lepto .

I would be asking the vet if they vaccinate 6 week olds with c7 because i cannot believe a vet would be stupid enough to do c7 only.

Otherwise find another vet & tell them why you are doing so

    Showdog,

We have rats and mice here (small plague at the moment) - we live in a commercial strip, Lola has already caught at least 1/2 dozen rats.. I know nothing about this extra vaccination - would you advise it for us??

  18. Im not abeliever off the alpha roll infact i believe its dangerous & doesnt achieve any results as most owners dont do it correctly & when the dog turns its one the battle.

its not ment to turn it into a battle and it is not ment as a long term solution, my OH used it with his dogs, we use with with our two and my family use it with their farm dogs. never ever had a problem.

    But I shall digress...

There are so many different trains of thought out there, therefore the beauty of a forum..
