  1. I wish that was the case, unfortunately it's not and a lot of people believe that once they have a RCD or "Safety Switch" installed they are 100% protected. They are designed to trip in approx. 30 milli seconds once a fault is detected, however like anything they sometime's can fail. Be aware that whilst having one is a must and a great idea, still treat electricity with respect. Is that like a surge-protector, or something else entirely? RCD = residual current device. Goes in the consumer unit (that box with all the trips/switches down the side of the house). Generally you'll need a proper electrician to put it in, if you can find one. It will be about $50 retail (you can spend a lot more but don't need to), and it's a 5 minute installation, so don't get ripped off. You may already have one and not know it of course. Works so quickly that you can grab/chew the live wire and it will trip before you feel the current. Also, if the dog chews wiring alone in the house, then there is a fire risk. An RCD would stop that too. A surge protector only protects electronics from spikes, and won't protect you/the dog from the 240V. Glad that the Max is OK kermat. Didn't think I'd be talking about electrical stuff in Dog Health! Yes, only use an electrical contractor, if you don't and you make an insurance claim you won't be covered....
  2. How about a KONG tug toy ? I'm sure they would last..
  3. yep, just run them under the water to remove the ice, still gone in minute's...
  4. Do you think the kongs are safe to leave with the dog chewing on them all day ? I've given them brisket bone's before but they're gone so quickly. I'll see what the local Petstore has.
  5. Does anyone have any idea's on an alternative to marrow bone's. I was at the Vet's yesterday and was advised to cut right back on marrow bone's for my Rottweilers. I like to go to work and know that the dogs have something to keep them amused. The vet says the marrow bone's are too hard and too fatty. Any ideas on what to give dogs to keep them amused for 8 hours at a time.
  6. I had a lump on my female Rottweiler checked yesterday at the vet. The vet simply used a needle, took a sample and put it under the microscope straight away. Turns out it's nothing to worry about. Some sort of fat cell. No need to remove it unless it become's large enough to restrict her in any way. It's the one's that you don't get checked out that are bad. Better to be safe than sorry.
  7. I got him out because he has 30 years experience and state's aggression and dominant behaviour is his specialty. In my case he came out and assessed my dog and told me he was unsuitable for domestic, for reasons which he explained to me. So that's as far as the consultation got. He was prompt getting back to me through email and arrived early on the day, however i'm still waitng on the written report ( to be emailed ) i was promised........If not the Pawman, maybe try Jane Harper, some people here have had proven success with her.
  8. At least you're getting your money back. I should've asked for a refund from a few trainers. I'm still waiting on my report ( through email )from The Pawman, from 2 1/2 weeks ago.
  9. I think it's the trainers personal preference. I've been told by one to use choker chains, another said no, use a Halti and another said a halti is totally unsuitable. So figure that one out.
  10. I got my male Rotty the injection about 3 months ago without any problems, the vet didn't mention any possible side effects. My female Rotty has been on monthly Interceptor tablets for her whole life.
  11. K9 Centre does not ONLY train dogs for protection and detection but obedience as well. Our trainers have a wealth of experience behind them and guarantee[/b] to fix all dog problems. A properly trained Protection or Detection dog must not only love their work but must have a sound knowledge of obedience. K9 Centre I left my male Rotty with another recommended center who train protection, guard and general obedience ( located just south of Burpengary) who also guarantee to fix all problems. I left him for over a week and was promised when i left him that on my return i would receive a full demonstration and there would be an improvement in the dog's behaviour. Does the K9 Centre offer a guarantee of no payment if the problem is not solved ? I'm very skeptical about leaving a dog in the hands of a trainer and expect that when you come back in a weeks time you have a different dog. ......... If anyone wants to know which center i'm talking about, feel free to PM and i'll give you the details before you part with your $$$.
  12. Fair comment, my mistake. I've used Dog Tech, Team Work, Multi National K9 and The Pawman.
  13. Absolutely correct, i haven't used Jane Harper, nor did i mention her name at all. As my reply clearly stated, my reference was per the one's i've used.
  14. Have to disagree with that, i've spent a fair bit of money on one's with a so called proven track record and didn't get much more than advice. I guess it's a matter of finding the right one. I myself have all but given up on handing over anymore cash to these so called specialist trainers. I really wonder now if some trainers receive their qualifications out of a cornflake's box. I hope the topic starter finds the right one.
  15. Sounds familiar. Too hard basket i bet. Careful what trainer you try next, i've tried several through glowing recommendations and achieved nothing other than an empty wallet. I wish you all the best in finding a suitable trainer.
  16. Yea i believe there is light at the end of the tunnel, i just haven't taken the right turn yet........... The main problem is every trainer has a different idea and one says something and another says the complete opposite. For example, to walk him i was told to use a choker chain, another said use a halti for better control of his head when he spots another dog. Then the next guy says no way, a halti has no control over a large dog like mine Another says he's not suitable for a domestic dog, told me he's a serious legal risk and offered nothing more............ You know the thing that gets me, when the breeder first took him back from the original owners, she even showed him twice and he behaved ( he even received a V rating which she says was great ) .I took him to the breeders property a few months back and her daughter jumped in the ute and was all over him and he loved it. Personally i didn't agree with her doing that. I just give up. They all have different ideas, none of which help or they have no idea at all, or just tell me in a nice way to get rid of him.
  17. I'm still letting my heart get back to normal. It all happened so fast and i didn't have time to think. I thought the worst for the staffy though. My plans are to not waste another dollar on anymore dog trainers up here. The only one i'm willing to try is this K9 Force center down in NSW. I'll have to have a chat to the trainer/owner sometime and see what he says. Although I believe there are no available appointments left this year. There is hope, i'm sure of it. I think todays experience backed that up.
  18. I had a potentially very serious and dangerous situation this afternoon with my boy. A local male staffy, who knows my female Rotty from the off leash park made his way to my home ( 4 streets away ) and was at my front gate trying to get in, probably to have a play with her. My male Rotty got past me and ran down the driveway and hit my front closed and locked aluminium gate's and broke through. I ran after him and screamed out his name and to my absolute amazement, he stopped almost dead in his tracks and didn't so much as touch the staffy. I really thought that staffy was going to be seriously hurt or killed. The staffy ran up into my yard to see my female and my boy stayed on the footpath. I had to get my boy back up the driveway and out back without any lead or collar. ( Wasn't easy, but i did it ) At the same time a male staffy is in my boys yard......I took the staffy back to his home and put him his yard and closed the gate and left a note for my mate to ring me........Now this is proof that my dog CAN be trained. For him to burst through the gates and not touch the staffy after my scream, i think that is all the proof i need, that i've known all this time, that he CAN be trained............ After my heart slowed down and i sat down, thought about it, i'm very impressed with the way he listened to me. I honestly thought that staffy was dead......... Four trainers, no results, too hard basket, countless hundreds of dollars and suggestions of PTS the dog.
  19. I doubt you'll find that to be the case, S&B. As I understand it the OP has consulted with numerous trainers and managed to exhaust a lot of funds and time on her dog. The OP has only said she'd prefer not to see any more trainers up her way .... she didn't say she'd prefer not to see anyone else at all. She has been in contact with K9. He's booked until January, 2008. Give the OP a chance to draw breath and give her matter some thought. ETA: Sorry - just realised the OP already responded to your post, S&B. thanks all , just one thing Erny, replace the her with his and the she with he
  20. [ Have you contacted Jane Harper? I have seen first hand the transformation in Micha (Husky87's Husky) and while he is not leaping around to play with other dogs, he is very manageable and a tonne better than he was previously. TBH It sounds as though you have decided that no-one can help your rotty without exhausting all options. Maybe the fact that his behaviour can only be managed, not cured is the problem here? Several people here have suggested her but i haven't contacted her as yet. I've tried four others ( who came recommended ) without success. I'm at the stage where i just cannot believe there isn't someone out there who has half an idea on how to improve him. I'm not even after a miracle or expect a total turn around, just an improvement. Who would've thought finding a dog trainer who knows what they're doing would be so difficult. I guess the only one left worth a try would be Steve from K9 Force, everyone on this forum seems to rave about him. Amazing really, having to travel 15 hours each way to find a suitable dog trainer.
  21. I was thinking about it , but looks like it won't be this year if you knew what i've been through with him, there's no question of being dedicated on my side. I don't believe any long distance course will help, the problem needs one on one attention. I appreciate your help, but honestly, i'm not going to try any other trainers up this way, all the previous one's i've tried were recommended and were so called "experts" but all failed or more to the point didn't try or put it in the too hard basket. I've tried group, one on one home visits, left the dog with a trainer live in and so on........they're great at taking your money and claiming to know what they are doing, but i'm yet to meet one that has any idea how to help me.......
  22. ETA: Failing that, K9 Force is headed this way next year... Not sure about that, next year is a bit too late
  23. it's not me that a trainer has to worry about throwing in the towel, it's finding a trainer who won't throw in the towel, as has been the case to date ( excluding The Pawman who was upfront and professional). Money hasn't been the issue, but i'll start to think twice now about handing over cash to another trainer such as the first 3 i tried. What dog issues do you have? exactly as i have stated above
  24. I emailed K9 Force last night and he told me he can't recommend anyone up here who can help. He did however suggest a trip down to see him. Just that a 25 - 30 hour round trip, plus all cost's is a big gamble if i don't get past step 1.
  25. well, he did the initial assessment but that was as far as we got,he said my boy isn't really suitable for a domestic household situation. He seemed like he had a lot of knowledge and experience, just wasn't the outcome i was wanting. I think i've tried just about all the trainers i can, but it's not a money issue.
