A very nice entry  Hope you all have a great day!!!

  2. Hey guys,

As probably a lot of you have heard (as I am fairly excited) I will be bringing home my first main registered and show potential pup in 2 weeks. As soon as I have his papers in my hands I will start entering him in his first shows as a baby puppy.. but first I have a lot to learn and prepare for!

My little guy is a blue merle Australian Shepherd dog, so my questions if they relate to any specific breed or type, I am talking about him. :D

So I will start my list.. but please don't try and answer everything if you can't, any help is much appreciated. I just want to be as best prepared as I can in order to make the best entrance as a new shower. I know I won't be perfect by any long shot, but as long as I am acceptable and can do justice to the dog for my breeder.

I have joined dogs NSW and have been in touch with my local KC, and will discuss as much as I can with the breeder when I pick him up, but I know it will take more than this.

    1. Where do most people purchase show suits? Mix and match is fine, but are there particular shops you find helpful, online or not?

    2. What colours do you think would suit my dog - for leads and show suits I am thinking.

    3. Can anyone recommend good shampoos/conditioners? Are there any other types of grooming or shop preparation I may need? I currently have a slicker brush, pin brush and bristle brush just for starters.

    4. What type of leads are used for this breed? I have been to a few shows to try and see but havn't got a great idea. Also where is the best place to purchase leads and snake chains (as far as I have seen so far, snake chains seem popular?)

    5. When going to my first few shows, am I better to just set up a chair and my crate away from the main hustle? I don't want to miss anything, but don't want to get in the way of other exhibitors or their marquees.

    6. Can anyone recommend any books or websites which are particularly useful for teaching a show puppy to stand and gait? I would like to do this as right as possible from day 1, but unfortunately they do not have show classes at my local KC.

Thanks so much for the help anyone can give. I know I have probably forgotten a fair few things, just have too much going on in my head at the moment I think!

There are shows at Dubbo next weekend, Saturday, Sunday & Monday. I suggest you toddle along and watch how the rings run. It's a great way to learn...

One thing I wouldn't recommend for a coated breed is a snake chain though I used to use it on my Bearded Collie without any problems but those kind of chains are NOT recommended for coated breeds.

Good Luck with your show career...

  3. How big is it ...

    Huge

Are you able to do a breed numbers break down like NSW does???

Yes, we did that last year and put them on the receipt letter.

but surely a week before the show to close entries is against the rules???

Judges must be informed of numbers and exhibit tags must be sent out by next Sunday.

Apart from that, rule 7.4.8 "The Affiliate conducting an exhibition shall be responsible for observing the closing date for entries for that exhibition". We've discussed this on DoLforums before, and the popular interpretation was this means it's a decision for the club, not that anything that turns up after the closing date in the published schedule must be returned. Even the RASV extends the date to which it shall take entries!

It is not unusual for Clubs in NSW to close the show on the Sunday prior to a Show (7 days). Nobody has a problem with that and in fact, appreciate the fact that they can get late entries in. The NSW Chihuahua Club Show that was held at Easter closed 2 days before the Show. The object of the exercise is to get as many entries as possible and thereby, make money for the Club so they can keep running Shows for the benefit of Exhibitors ;)

  4. These shows are now bigger than I can recall, but I'm quite keen to see them get even bigger.

Entries will not be taken after this Saturday afternoon, so if you want to enter additional dogs or put a first entry in please either post it Priority Paid today or tomorrow, or hand deliver to Paula at KCC Park on Saturday.

    CC

i will be at KCC Park on Saturday. how would i find Paula to personaly hand deliver her my entry in the morning? will there be a club banner were she will be set up? please advise :)

    Regards Sariluda

Just look for the Schipperke people. Someone will be able to point you in the right direction...

  5. Lol... I am a bit lame, but she is my first home bred baby after all.

I was quite surprised to see that group 1 isn't leaps and bounds ahead on entries. Yay!

    :eek::eek:

Of COURSE you must scrapbook her first show number!!! And her first ribbon! And you DID get some of her first haircut trimmings, didn't you??!!

You will be :cry::cry: in thirty years' time if you don't!

Don't forget to collect her puppy teeth when they fall out. I know someone who did that, I really don't know how they found them all since I've never seen one of my puppies teeth...

  6. Just wondering from other dolers, when is one a Titled a "Professional Handler"

Eg: Does one title themselves with such a name or

is there a age in years they have been around the show ring that they get this title or

is it how many "Best in Show" awards they have won etc....

I am just curious on the thoughts from "other handlers" what they think is a Professional handler.

To me a "professional handler" is a person who is paid to handle dogs for others. In the USA its probably someone who does it full time for a living. Not sure that's possible here.

I don't see it having anything to do directly with experience or wins but its unlikely you'd pay someone to handle for you if they weren't good at it.

To me this pretty much sums it up. To be a "professional" at something i think it just means you make a living from it. You dont necessarily need to be qualified or even good at it i guess.

Sorry I'd have to disagree with some of that. To me a "professional" is someone who is paid to do it, not necessarily makes a living from it. I used to be classed as a "professional" ten pin bowler and that was because I won money playing the game, not because I made a living from it...

  7. I would like to say congratulations to the people who organised the show. I only attended Sunday, but I had a great time and everything, was well run from where I stood!! lol

It was my first time there and I will definitely try and go next year!!

Yes it is a lovely show, well run and absolutely lovely people who try to help in any way they can. My only complaint is the burrs. Showing a coated breed is an absolute nightmare. It took me 2 hours to get the burrs out of just one dog. I know they can't do much about them but they're still really annoying...

  8. Do people keep going back with a dog if it is non-awarded a few times? I wouldn't.

I know several in my breed who have (same people with different dogs)

I have seen the SAME dog non-awarded at least 10 times. Each time the exhibitor asked why it was not given its Challenge, they were given the same answer. I am not sure if they kept going because it HAD been awarded in the past (and I truly hope not as it was a major and obvious fault) or if they didn't believe the judges. They had a bitch which was a nice example of the breed and were always awarded challenges for her so not sure why they kept going with the other one.....

I was going to mention this particular dog (yes, I know which one you mean) but I couldn't work out how to say it politely so I just kept quiet  but in saying that, I did actually speak to the owner of said dog and she was of the opinion that whilst his coat was incorrect, she felt that he better conformed to the standard than some of the other dogs she was showing and this was the reason why she continued showing him :mad All I could do was shake my head :mad

  9. The rare breeds are certainly a problem but could be easily solved by requiring say 4-Best of Breed placing. I have known people who lived in Perth,Darwin, Adelaide and Hobart who travel to Speciality Shows in Sydney and Newcastle so I cant understand the locality being such a handicap.

Firstly, let me say that I take exception to someone saying that my rare breed (or any rare breed) is a problem. I also think you are missing the point. If you are getting 6 point challenges week in week out, you are getting BOB anyway so 4 BOB placings would mean nothing. Also, it is more difficult to win with a rare breed than with a numerically larger breed. I am aware that many Judges are told, whilst going through JTS in my state, that they should be putting up the more popular breeds, not the smaller numbered or rare breeds. So if you think showing a rare breed to CH is a piece of cake, I urge you to give it a go yourself instead of "assuming" that ALL rare or numerically small breeds are "petrol" champions.

  10. Reading all the various comments re this post it is not rocket science to work out that regional people do it a lot tougher in many areas compared to the metro people , not just in dog shows.

If the judges put up less than quality dogs just to get a return invite ,shame on them. If the judge puts an exhibit up and as per the regulations sign off on the Challenge acknowledging the quality in his eyes so be it. I myself have been to shows with my breed being the only member of his/her breed in attendance, what am I supposed to do go home ?

As has been mentioned, at most country shows there are always plenty of city slickers... so what.

We arent' playing for sheep stations, just enjoy your dogs' and the day out.

A lot of judges in country shows play payback , you know it ,and I know it just peruse through the journals each month. The Canine bodies sponsor this blatant behaviour by their inaction to address it , heads in the sand stuff.

Same thing happens in the city and you will find that most of those that do attend country shows, do so because they believe the judging is fairer in the country, well more so than in the city...

  11. Yes this topic has been touched on before. Whilst your suggestion has merit, it is important to remember that the Judge on the day signs a Certificate that states "I am clearly of the opinion that this exhibit is of such outstanding merit as to be worthy to qualify for the title of 'Champion'" and does have the right to withhold a Challenge.

Please also note that those of us with rare breeds, in my case Havanese, do NOT have a specialty show and under your rules, we would never have any dogs titled. The Havanese achieved a 25 point BOB at last years Melbourne Royal and again at this years Sydney Royal.

I believe you need to think things through more clearly before coming up with these types of suggestions....

  12. Yes got mine on Tues too for Hound ring. Anyone want to hazard a guess on how long it will take to judge the hound ring? (162)

Both Sheneen Bendixen & Lainie Knox are All Breeds and generally pretty quick so the only problems I foresee is if there is a clash in the middle and more than likely a clash when Group Specials are being done...

  14. Slightly OT but still on the subject of gentamicin... my father was given gentamicin when in Hospital for a lung infection. One unfortunate side-effect is the toxicity to the sensory cells in the ear, which has caused my father to now have a balance problem. I don't know if it would have the same effect in dogs, but I would suspect it could and probably would...

  15. I don't mind buying a catalogue, when they are reasonably priced. I will not pay $7 for a catalogue that covers a champ & open show but only shows the entries for the champ show, as entry for the open show is "pay on the day" or $9 for a catalogue that covers both shows but I'm only entered in one show!!!
