  1. YAY , That is awesome news I hope that you have lots of entries and heaps of fun. Sorry I wont be coming up as my girl and I are part of a study group for Diabetes Assistant Dogs and that is close to completion of the study.

    cheers

Thanks Kallistar. We're really excited to have finally got it off the ground.

Funnily enough, one of the other trainee judges is also doing the Diabetes scent program!

  2. yep, things like a bow, sit pretty/beg, pony (between your feet), balancing on something, etc. They are a great way to start and finish a routine, and often a good way of catching your breath during a routine.

    The list of poses from the old guidelines includes;

    POSES AND OTHER ACTIONS

    Bow

    Beg

    Dead dog

    Wrap (cane, leg)

    Cross legs

    Roll over

    Hand/foot touch

    Paw lifts

    Retrieving a prop

Jumping (depending on breed, size, age etc)

I've also seen some nice poses with small dogs with the dogs balanced on their human partner; ie jump into their arms, balance on feet, etc. I'd consider anything that looks 'showy' and shows a connection between dog and handler, to be a good pose.

    I hope that helps?

  3. We sell the Freedom No Pull Harness at my dog club, and have found it seems to be very comfortable for dogs. It has a rear attachment, which is a martingale style, and a front attachment clip as well. There seem to be a few online stockists in Australia.

They also seem to be adjustable to fit a wide range of body types. I regularly fit them for my classes, when people want harnesses, and I haven't found anything I like as much for my own dogs.

  4. I'm looking to find some awesome heelwork examples on youtube etc. I know I've seen heaps of cool ones in the past, but of course, the minute I start looking for something is the minute I can't actually find what I'm looking for!

Has anyone got any particular favourites they'd like to share? Or even just cool personal brags? All videos welcome! :D

    Denise Fenzi has some great ones, and she's just done a series of specific elements of heelwork (Turns, halts, etc) on her blog;

Kamal Fernandez also has some great videos on youtube (he's brilliant to train with too)

  5. Another weekend, another discipline ... Agility for us this weekend. No Qs in Excellent Jumping, but the lil big man did have a couple of lovely 1 fault rounds - both times my fault - miscued him and brought down a bar on a rear cross, and didn't work a slightly offline jump enough and copped a refusal - but they were otherwise faultless runs. And no broken start lines :) .

But the big thing for the weekend was his third pass in Novice Agility, to give him his AD title - 6th tile for the year across 4 disciplines ... clever little big man Rory - who will be known (subject to Dogs Tas approval as Dual Ch(T) Winpara Soul Dreamer CDX RAE4 TSD AD JD HTM.S FS.N ET.

And not forgetting miss Kirra who at 12.75 years old, had a lovely time - no Qs, but some happy running - and a clear Masters Agility round but 5 seconds over time, and a one refusal Masters Jumping round - my fault again  .

Great results, Tassie, and lovely to see a more *cough* mature dog having such a great time!

  6. Hmm,quite a few for my two this year.

Shandy (CH Milnholm Carnival Queen DWDFN HTMN RE CD)

Now that her jaw seems to be properly heeled, we're going to give Open a whirl, and I'd like to finish that title (CDX) and get her RAE finished this year too. I'm also aiming to finish at least one of her DWD Intermediate titles this year.

    Zimri (Llandwyn Crescent Moon (AI))

At 14 months, he's ready to start competing. We're aiming to finish his conformation championship this year, and get it out of the way- almost halfway there. We'll probably start with Rally soon (RN done), and I think his RA (one pass down, two to go)is quite realistic this year, providing we get to enough trials. I'd like his CCD title (one pass down, and close to ready for CD in training), and at least a start on his CD. We should be able to get both his DWD starters titles as well (two heelwork passes, should finish these easily). If we can squeeze it in, and if he keeps progressing the way he is, we may try for some agility in there, so let's tack a JD on the wishlist as well.

I'd also love to try some herding with him :D

Wow, I think finding the time for all these competitions may be the hard part!

After losing Shandy tragically at the start of the year, Zim has started competition well, and we're making good progress on our wishlist, with RN down, one CCD pass, and two DWD Heelwork to Music passes. Little Miss Inari has joined us, and at 5 months, is showing plenty of promise. Aiming for her to be close to competition ready by the end of the year, maybe some rally under her belt if there are some late trials.

Zim's RA is done, his Heelwork to Music Starters Title is done, and he has two Rally Excellent, two CCD, two DWD Freestyle Starters and one Strategic Pairs agility pass.I'm really pleased with the way he is working, and we'll have a few titles to finish next year. Inari will also start trialling next year, and I should finish my DWD judges training.

  7. ACT Judges training program are hosting our first mock competition in Canberra on Sunday 2 Nov. Once we have a decent panel of judges trained, we hope to able to start holding our own competitions in Canberra next year.

We have a great venue now, an Indoor Archery range (its more than 30mx 40m, so plenty of space for a full size ring and sports rubber flooring which is lovely to dance on)

    That is fantastic news.

Sounds like a great venue too :)

It is a great venue BC4ME! We had a great day, with 9 competitors performing for the trainee judges (including a few of us who did double duty as both!) Most importantly, everyone enjoyed themselves, and we're hoping to put together our first real competition next year!

  8. Cleo - Very happy to see you too, thank you. I sent an email to Sue a few days ago, but haven't received a reply. I don't think there is anything I don't like about the Cardi's. I especially love the blue merles, are they hard to come by? We are in Melbourne and I am trying to stick to breeders within Vic. I just like things to be more personal than only emails, and I would like to visit before committing to a breeder (in an ideal world).

I should warn you that the Cardi's like all Corgwyn, shed - a lot!

I assume that you've emailed Sue Hadley at Bethwyn? You could also try Lynnette Harris at Kardibroke, and Jan West at Llandaff(Jan doesn't breed often, but she has the most lovely Cardis - her boy Oliver is my Zim's grandfather, and I'd steal her Gem or Olivia in a heartbeat). Check out the Australian Cardis Calling website and Facebook page as well.

Here's one of Zimri and Inari, taken at a local garden this month.

  10. Obviously, I'm a big fan of Cardigans, and all of mine have loved kids. They are very smart, and do need some training (although I'm a performance trainer, and tend to choose the busier drivier examples of the breed). Which breeders have you contacted? Feel free to PM me if you'd like some pointers or advice.

If you like unusual, maybe check out some of the mid sized Spitz breeds- I really like the Finnish Lapphunds, Keeshounds and German Spitz (Mittel)

  11. yep, I specifically entered my boy in neuter class, while I was showing my young girl this weekend, as he just loooooves people, and I knew there would be a few wandering around over the weekend while there were other things happening at the showground. I sit him on my lap while I laze in a chair, and I always say that people are welcome to say hi to them as they walk past, if they look interested. I know some breeders with more dogs, or harder to groom breeds are busy, and I figure its my little bit of PR for the purebreed community. He'll climb into laps, or roll over for belly rubs, and we often laugh at what a difficult life our show dogs lead!

Mine are performance dogs first and foremost, so if people are interested, I tell them about what sport we compete in, and they like to show off tricks as well.

I'm also a second generation breed exhibitor (completely different breed to what my parents had) and I'm only showing while my current dogs are young and in training (or until my young bitch finishes her title) but we like to make it fun while we can.

  12. Ah excellent, thanks, will head over tomorrow! May even be able to find a breeder too! Not that we want to show our pup, merely to get one that we know is a full collie.

    Thanks!

    Hawk

You don't need to want to show to buy from a breeder that you knows cares about the breed  Drop by and say hi if you see us!

  13. I'd say Astro was probably a Pembroke, but you can get red pointed tri-colours in Cardigans too, so you might want to check out both breeds and see what suits you best. Obviously I'm biased, but I prefer the Cardigan temperament (that's why I chose them), but both breeds are great!

  14. I've been at the working dog shows all weekend with my Cardigan Corgis, and there have been Collie Roughs here at all shows. I have a friend who does obedience as well, who breeds rarely, and I thinks there's a breeder at Marulan.

I checked my catalogue, and there are actually 16 Collie Roughs entered tomorrow (Monday), including my friend, so it's probably a good day to come and check out Collies!

If you're nervous, come and find me with the Brindle and White Cardigan Corgi (I have the only one entered, and I'll introduce you to my friend)

  15. Hello, I'm new here looking for a pure bred tri colour corgi pup for my husband. He grew up with a lovely corgi, Astro, who lived to the age of 19 :) We have not had a dog in 14 years and now our children are a little older, I'd love to surprise him with a pup. We live in Victoria and I am open to all advice. Thanks for having me, Liz. :)

Hi Liz R, are you looking for a Pembroke or a Cardigan Corgi? I'm a Cardi owner, but I may be able to point you towards some breeders. Have you checked out the breeders listed on the breed pages here on Dogzonline?
