  1. I think I would be honest about it, I mean there are also some kennels out there who are fantastic and some who are not. Admittedly settling a puppy into this routine could be hard, but it does have a companion as a "constant" stability.

I don't think a FIFO worker having a dog is any worse than someone who has a dog and sticks them in doggie daycare all day every day from 9-5. At least when a FIFO worker is Home, they are home... not going to work all over again.

Hard decision, but I think honesty would be more appreciated.

    Well said

It's a hard one and I think for me it would have to be on a individual basis - is some who's a FIFO worker (usually financially stable) worse than someone who's unemployed and less likely to be able to afford vet emergency situation i.e. cancer treatment when the dog's older? On the flip side the umemployed person is more liekly to be there for the dog 24/7 whereas the FIFO will be away more often.

  2. I like the idea of a pet bond.

But when you move into a premises you pay a bond to cover any damages. It doesn't matter if the damages are caused by a person, a pet, a kid, a ghost, or whatever, the bond is paid for that reason. A pet bond is just double dipping on the money they can take from you, in my opinion.

As a LL I too love the idea of a "pet bond"!

If a tenant damages a property, is behind in rent and damage is done by an animal then it's unlikely bond will even go close to covering the loss incurred by the Landlord :-(

  3. I was wondering what the issues were with White Aussie shepherds? Someone I used to work for owned one (from a registered breeder) and it had alot of health problems. Is this normal?

    A bit late in replying!

I have a pet Aussie with a lot of white on him - a merle x merle breeding - and he has a lot of skin allergies, especially in the Summer months - usually bridge of nose and hock area affected.

I have found that since we moved almost 2 years ago it is not as bad and I think it's due to the native grass that's the lawn on our property - very vivid green color, tear drop shape and doesn't need to be mowned often.

  4. My response wasn't directed at you, or anyone in particular SW. :)

    Apologies!

It's not that hard to bring your kid/kids to a show, keep them under control, provide them with activities and supervise them. Thousands of parents have managed to show and have children at the same time.

How fantastic for those parents - not everyone has the luxury of showing with a support network who can help keep an eye on the children when they're in the ring.

Personally it's a logistical nighmare for me as I quiet often show by myself as my close and trusted friends are in other States so I just plan my shows at venues close to Grandparents who love to have our 3yr old for the weekend!

  5. I think it's a fantastic idea although trying to organise something like this I think would be pretty hard. I think it would probably work for the two main venues in Victoria, perhaps an individual business with a licence to run the service on show days?

I have a small person and I have yet to take her to a show unless I have an army of friends to help keep a eye on her while I'm in the ring as I know some people really dislike children and I can understand - those noisy, unattended, running around wildly type annoy me too but then so do dogs who bark non-stop and their owners don't tell them off!

  7. Ultimately, it is the breeder's choice whether they wish to euthanise deaf puppies or risk placing that burden onto the community. We are really stuck between a catch 22 situation of "damned if we do" or "Damned if we don't". We get howled down for producing puppies with issues that may not have been forseen or helped, and we also get howled down if we decide to euthanise these puppies and be responsible for the animals we breed.

    Well said! :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I don't think that's what this thread was ever about, even though a few people have mentioned it... it was about euthanising WHITE puppies. Euthanising DEAF puppies would be a different topic.

Apologies Wuffles, perhaps I didn't edit the quoted post enough ;) I was applauding the comment regarding "damned if you do, damned if you don't" :) IMO if a breeder does not feel confortable with placing a WHITE puppy that could potenitally be deaf, skin issues, cancer and chooses to euthanise that puppy then that's their own choice and should not be taken away by some animal liberation types. Likewise if they choose to place the puppy and explain ALL the potential health problems then that's also their choice.

  8. No evidence, but my personal expereince indicates that extreme white dogs are a little more conatct allergy prone as well. A bit itchy.

From my personal experience I think you're spot on - I have a badly mismarked Australian Shepherd who's allergic to dirt, grass, flowers, pretty much most things :-( He is worse in the warmer months. He's also stone deaf in one ear and half in the other ear
