  1. The only thing that can be done is have the tooth removed :) Kovu has his carnassial removed for the same reason when he was 2,

    He is fine now :D

ETA If he has an abscess ,there is already an open path in the tooth to the bone. The tooth has to be removed to stop bacteria travelling down to the bone. Chances are if he has lots of tartar on his teeth once this is removed the tooth will be fractured and mobile anyway.

  2. What are you feeding your dog? Tinned food really makes the teeth scale up fast. Feeding a premium dry dog food specifically for teeth cleaning will help, the best is Hills T/D as the biscuit is huge and its cleans the teeth, the tooth goes into the biscuit and fibres pull the tartar off the tooth, other dry food crumbles without the tooth going in.There are other oral care dry foods but none are the size of the TD biscuits.

Also plenty of Brisket bones the softer ones the teeth can go into, hard leg bones whole or split in half will fracture teeth and then they will have to be removed.

For a descale and polish you would be looking at around $300 over that if there are extractions needed and if you decide to do pre GA bloods .

  3. I would say desex him ... I desex all my pet pups before they leave here at 8 weeks of age both male and female. I do not believe the general public should have entire animals, JMO. Are you prepared to re-enforce rules with him ? You can curb bad behaviours like cocking legs on everything but you MUST be very consistant,Also fence jumping could become an issue, It is not uncommon for an entire dog to seek out a mate (regardless of sex).

Unless you own a show/breeding dog there is no reason to keep an entire dog.

I think alot of people on the forum forget that not every one is as dog savvy as them, This entire male Lab will be a lot of work for you avaerage person.

  4. Ok I think you mean Justin ... He is not doing it anymore but someone has taken over for him. This is all I could find :)

    ANI TRANS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Hi - my name is Collette Hayman. My husband, Lawrie and I have just purchased Anitrans. For three years we have been delivering poultry from Atherton to Normanton to Mt Isa to Charters Towers and back to Atherton. This run has grown so much that we decided to buy a larger vehicle for the run. Hearing that Justin's business was for sale we decided to purchase Anitrans and expand our run from Cairns to Victoria following Justin's route.

We are taking over the phone number for Anitrans so it remains the same 0438 271 343.

Our land line is 07 40970207. Email address is [email protected]

  5. Narooma (Dalmeny,Kianga) approx 45 mins south of Batemans Bay is very nice  I live here and no dog number laws and off lead beaches. We do have paralysis ticks though but provided you frontline/advantix etc and check your pets daily they should be fine :D I have lived here most of my life and in that time only 1 of my dogs has had tick paralysis (he was on frontline) but he survived. (we have great vets (narooma) and vet nurses lol (I am a vet nurse).

ETA There is also a dog Obedience and Agility club in Narooma on saturdays :)

    here are a few pix

This is dewsburys beach between kianga and dalmeny

  7. You are better off using frontline , advantix or permoxin .

I have found ticks under tick collars.

remember to apply frontline or advantix every 2 weeks for ticks.

Permoxin is fortnightly but if they swim re apply.

IMO the best tick control product is frontline spray- however you must wet the entire dog, it lasts 3 weeks for ticks

ETA No tick prevention is 100% effective , however you dog is more likely to survive if it has some form of prevention on.

  8. Sorry, Not wanting to hijack this thread but you may not have found many ticks on the tail BUT how bad would you feel if one was there and you missed it.

I do admit that most ticks are found on the face and chest BUT does that mean that you only have to clip the face and chest?????? Why not just stop when you find the tick?

Sorry but I worked as a vet nurse in a tick area for 13 years and I truly believe that my boss would have raised the roof if we left any hair on the feet, tail or face, just so the dog still looked nice.

We clip the entire dog if a dog comes in with tick paralysis, However if an owner asks for the tail to be left when we clip the dog normally then thats what we do.(obviously its alot easier to just check the tail ..rather than the whole dog)

In the 5 yrs Ive been working as a vet nurse I have not found a tick on the tail, most ticks are found forward of the front legs however this is not always the case and some are found in the groin and between toes etc. (thats not to say it could never happen I have just not seen it)

Here is what would normally be classed as a tick clip for summer (obviously the ears would also be clipped) but tail usually left.

  9. Sounds to me its a dominance thing.... Humping = Dominance and peeing the same thing. For some reason something in the pack structure must have changed.

It does not matter if a dog is desexed or not they will still dry hump things to show their dominace. The urinating is a scent reminder of the fact he is boss, or trying to be.

  10. Just a reminder TICKS are ACTIVE NOW !! REMEMBER to put tick protection on your pets.

FRONTLINE PLUS / REGULAR - Every 2 weeks.

    ADVANTIX - Every 2 weeks.

PROBAN - 1 tab per 10kg every second day.

FRONTLINE SPRAY - Every 3 weeks.

TICK COLLARS - Monthly , if your dog swims tick collars are useless.

REMEMBER NOTHING IS 100% effective check your pets daily.

  11. OK I have met many "camp" dogs Aind what he has done is pretty much the norm however now he has a loving owner you want to curb that behaviour,so onlead from now on and in my opinion you should have him desexed. While this may not totally stop the behaviour, you do not want to add to the feral dog problem yourself :)

I would not muzzle him either ,I do not think its fair if he is muzzled and another dog has a go at him and he cannot protect himself.

Him fighting is probably how he lost his eye, so he may never be totally trustworthy with other dogs, just keep him on lead and correct him when needed.

  12. Kirah - you were my heart dog ,my best friend for 6 yrs ,you were always there when I needed you ,and then I had to be there for you.

I made the hardest decision of all to put you to sleep,I held you to the end.

    Forever in my heart

  13. Do you have a dog crate ? If not get one and keep her locked in it for a week, only out to go to the toilet ON LEAD .

NO on the bed/lounge at all and no jumping into the car. She MUST rest and that means being confined for a whole week.

  14. Hi Danielle thanx for the offer but my friend is in Sydney.

tdierikx - Either would be great :) the dog is Mello my 3 legged koolie, My friend is looking after her until the 10th June when I will pick her up, and the crate can be returned. It is only to be used when my friend leaves mello alone as she is chewing everything, also my friend had a tree fall on her house so has workmen in and out this week.

  15. thought some may wish to know Mello's story ...Apparently she was in a storm drain for 6 days and the rangers had to trap her, she ended up in campbell town pound, who I had rung and left my number with incase she turned up there... she has been in there since last saturday, her original owner got a letter in the mail today and rang me, she could not afford to get her out but also wanted her to come back to me so I paid her release fee and she is now back in my name and Ill be getting her on the weekend.

I now don't believe there ever was another home from the people who had her last, I think she went missing or they dumpped her as where she was found was too far from where she went from.
