With the milbemax, if you're using it to prevent heartworm, make sure you give it monthly, not 3 mthly like you do for intestinal worms. Sure you knew that already though.

(I mention this only because one of the vets I work with recently swore till he was black and blue in the face that milbemax doesn't do heartworm. I had to show him the pamphlet :rolleyes:)

Very true. The more someone attempts to cuddle/smooch a sighthound, the more the hound will give them the cold shoulder.

Everything's on their terms, if and when they want to cuddle (with their people) they will.

With most of your sighthounds in the study being greyhounds (racing bred I presume), I'd say that skews your results enormously.

The majority of racing greys have little to no socialisation as pups, and some of their handling isn't exactly confidence building either.

I know your study will have dogs from all walks of life, but when the vast majority of one of your samples has next to no socialisation at all, I don't see the results ringing true.

The guy just walked in off the street, no appointment. There was no one on reception for a short while. I went and waited outside, the guy gave me such filthy look. Sigh.

I guess testing the "boldness" of dogs that are already not overly bold means they'll come in at the lower end of the scale regardless?

Many are reserved around strangers, but shouldn't be nervous or shy. Some (like my afghan) can be aloof and independent. Quietly dignified and sensitive.

I'd also be mentioning to the staff that the infected dog shouldn't have been in the waiting room.

He should either be brought in another entrance or even looked at outside.

Can I just ask how you draw the conclusion that sighthounds are timid from your results? Genuine question, not having a go here. What were the specific questions relating to their temperament?

I have 4 whippets and an Afghan Hound. Neither is timid, far from it in fact.

I've also owned a show bred greyhound before. Started off a bit timid but soon gained confidence from me and I could take her anywhere and do anything with her.

Have also worked with over 150 greyhounds (race bred) and I'd say about 4 of those were timid.

I have a XXXL topbuy soft crate. Was dirt cheap and is actually really good quality. I love it. Only thing is the sides and top are just mesh, so no protection from wind. I take this one camping and anywhere else I need to contain 4 whippets for short periods.

My other one is from Puppy Power which has an ebay store. It's a medium and I bought it for when I only want to take 2-3 whippets instead of all of them. This one has roll down window flaps and the roof flap which is what I wanted for more protection on crappy days. Comes with a carry bag and tent pegs to peg it down too. Was cheaper on ebay than where I bought it from (dog show)

Soooooo handy having crates to take places! Love them.

I've only just read this. So sorry to hear of your loss.

I went through a similar thing with my 8yo greyhound 5yrs ago.

One day she was well, then over the course of two days she became very jaundice and flat.

After being on IV fluids for a few days she was still very crook, and ultrasound revealed nothing (having such a super deep chest it was very hard for the vet to get a good look at all of Phoebe's organs)

So on about day 5 we went to surgery. It was discovered she had a huge tumour surrounding her bile duct, so she was given her wings on the surgery table. There was some wiz bang bypass surgery they could do and attempt to remove the tumour, but I didn't think this was fair to my dear girl, so I said goodbye.

I've never seen this method work successfully.

This has most likely happened because your dog has been shaking his head. Unless it's drained and the pinna sutured back together, you're just leaving dead space there to fill up with blood again.

Has the vet been able to have a good look down the ears to check for a foreign body? Is he on any ear drops?

I'm afraid I'd just say bite the bullet and have the surgery done. Much less drama and better for the dog in the longrun.

Showdog, I think the OP was referring to if a heart problem would cause him to urinate on himself, not a potential back problem.

Weirdest thing we've removed from the stomach of a dog at work was the blade of a Stanley knife.

Dog recovered well, and might I just add the xray was very impressive.

Needles and threads also seem common in both dogs and cats
