  1. i want my new lens already! lol i need to get some practice in for this challenge...

i am also thinking of doing project 365 with my new lens (altho as i won't get it til a week or so in january i'll be a bit short) coz if i get out every day with it, dad is going to get me the optic swap lenses and accessory kit for it for my bday in february  so yay for this january challenge

my problem will be finding the effort to upload the photo's from the camera to the computer and then to here... i'm a bit lazy when it comes to taking pics off the camera lol

  2. Im hoping to join in January too

I have a Canon 1000D that i have had for 12 months and i dont use it as much as i should

lol i've also had my dslr for 12 months and don't use it much. am about to purchase a new fun lens (lensbaby) from the US, so am hoping that'll get me back into it. it's basically a 50mm lens but way more creative (you can move the focus point around and stuff)

  3. doh. knew i should of spoke to dad first. we already own understanding exposure lol

i just checked the site and i should be able to return it less postage costs (altho postage was free) so should only cost me to return it to them.

unless anyone on here would like to buy it off me?

  4. I have 'Understanding Exposure' by Bryan Peterson and 'The Digital Photography Book' by Scott Kelby. Both of which I recommend highly and have learnt alot from.

You can buy the two in a combo from fishpond here:

    http://www.fishpond.com.au/Books/Computers.../9780321474049/

There is a link on the right hand side that says 'buy together' with Understanding Exposure for $64.94

thanks i'm going to get those. as i'm having a lot of issues understanding the manual side of things so take a lot of pics on auto

  5. so because the motor is in the lens, and not the body, does that mean i can't use lenses that don't have a motor, or i can use them but i have to do something differently?

sorry i'm a complete newbie to this

eta, i forgot to say thanks heaps for that list of lenses

  6. Yup, you'll need to stick with Nikon or one of the third party brands: Tamron, Sigma, Tokina and make sure you get the Nikon mount. Third party makers do some awesome lenses. They also do some very very good lenses that will help keep your budget in tact while still giving you nice glass to work with.

so i won't be able to use those lenses without a connecting thing?

  7. weird she didn't have an adapter on hers. we went to the eco park and she only took 1 lens, and she took my lens off my camera and stuck it on hers... nothing else was added. no idea how she managed that.

  8. what brand lenses will fit my nikon d40? i remember someone who is a photographer telling me that canon and nikon lenses are interchangeable (she used my 55-200 on her canon camera) but not sure what else will fit.

  9. For those in the know re nikons, which 50mm would be best for a D40.

I'm very new to dslr's and really have no idea what the terms mean (af-s, etc) and don't really understand the difference between a 1.4 and a 1.8 (what does that actually mean?)

going by the prices, probably the 1.8 is all i can afford :D but might be able to go halves in the 1.4 for xmas if the 1.8 isn't going to suit my camera.

  10. i have a nikon d40, which i got with a twin lens kit for under $700 just after christmas.

it was recommended to me by dad as a great beginners dslr (he was a photojournalist for a long time). he bought one for mum for xmas and i was jealous so went out and got one for myself. i only got it for the price i did cause dad had bought it a week or so previously for that. sales guy must of thought i was a sucker coz he wasn't going to give me to me for less than about $150 more. so i went somewhere else, which didn't have any in stock. told them the story with the first shop, and how my dad had gotten a much better price the week before, and the guy said if i take his receipt back to that store that they should honour the exact price he got it for, and they did

i have to admit i don't use it much as i'd like, as i haven't figured out the manual stuff (the technical talk confuses me) and i tend to just use it on auto. but it takes fantastic pics on auto :D

  11. This was taken yesterday at the dog beach, as Kimmi and I emerged from a rather envigorating swim. What a great day!

This is about the only pic of me and diesel, will have to try and take more

aw that puppy has the cutest face!

  12. thanks

i did see some short courses offered by a tafe (in my price range) but there seemed to be several offered by the tafe, all seemed to be the same sort of thing, but somehow different, but didn't have enough info to know which to do.

i also saw your thread and copied and pasted the tips into a word document so might try fiddling with that first

i find that i haven't used the camera since because it's so big lol my compact camera fits in my handbag so much easier... altho i got around that in fiji by wrapping my camera in a sarong and sticking it in my backpack when we went places lol

  13. anyone know of any cheap photography courses i could do?

i bought a nikon d40 at the start of the year with a twin lens kit (18-55mm and a 55-200mm)

to be honest, i've only used it on my holiday in fiji at the start of the year, and took a heap of fantastic shots all on the auto settings lol

i want to learn more about the manual side of things.

i'm also wanting to learn about the different lens' available, what they all are good for etc.

i have attached one of my fave fiji pics :o
