  1. euk is good too i fed that for ages... it's hard when people come into my shop and ask what's a good food to feed their dog.. they're all good lol, as long as you feed a complete diet, but some dogs do well on some better than others.
  2. lucky! i was planning on using it for tooth pain a while ago and i read up on it heaps but wasn't gme to try bcoz of the ratio of good to bad info i found.. i just used nurofen instead
  3. i think it's a throwback from the old hunting days when the hunters would roll in the prey's poo to cover their smell... or maybe they just like it. i'm lucky my dog never does anything disgusting like that! yay!
  4. i feed my baby royal canin german shepherd adult formula and i think it's awesome. it's nice big pieces which she loves and smells nice and meaty. she's only been on that the last two big bags and for years befor that she was on a mixyure of Iams or Eukanuba, depending on how poor i was when i went to buy a bag, or what they had in stock. even thouh she's only 15kg, i feed her on the large breed formula and it has extra's for her joints and as she's a basset x german shepherd think she needs it! i swear by the premium foods and it's nice and easy at meal times bcoz i just measure her out a cup and she's done she still gets chicken necks, leftover meat and treats occasionally but it's easier and better whe i'm cleaning up her poo's if i give her the premium stuff. plus cost per day works out cheaper than feeding anything else.
  5. i saw a lady on a doco who turned grey as well. it's awful. google it first and read up on it and i've read some bad things about it. use only in moderation!
  6. i had a lady call me today to also say that advantage wasn't working for her. i would suggest you try frontline, it does the dog's surroundings as well. it's what i use and there's never a flea on her.
  7. DO YOU KNOW WHERE you can buy this stuff in vic? i cant seem to find it.
  8. roxy is rioght, the product does use he oils to carry it through the coat. you should bathe your dog then wait at least 24 hours beofre applying it. i would say that would be why he had the reaction this time and while they may have a different active ingredient, if the word sounds slightly similiar it means that it has the same base, just slightly diff chemical composition. so you may be better switching to frontline or something if it continues., good luck
  9. i was told the reason you get the burn patches is a PH imbalance. so if you check what food you are feeding and maybe change to something without wheat you will notice they stop without having to buy the rocks.
  10. i wouldn't use nature's gift.. yuck.. eagle pack have a loyalty card where once you buy ten bags you get free one. most places who sell it should have access to the loyalty cards from the rep. and at the moment petstock have buy one, get one free on advance dry food 3kg bags. i don't really LIKE advance but it's still a premium food and i've seen dogs doing well on it. so thats 6kg of premium food for under $30. you can mix up a few different varieties that way... get two puppy, two senior and two adult and you'll be set for a few weeks other than that i would suggest keeping them on the dry foods that are specifically designed for their age and weight so you get a good fat/protein mix that is suitable for them.
  11. try royal canin next time. most fussy dogs will eat it
  12. i work for petstock so i would recommend the more expensive one... lol... AND i think you should buy fifteen of them
  13. off the top of my head, i think the holistic range is designed for adults and pups... ??? or maybe thats just in the cat range... ask at your local food shop they'll know.
  14. a lot of the premium dog food brands are made overseas and their feeding guides aren't suitable for australian dogs. you should always feed a little less than what it says on the packet (though in the case of royal canin it's like 1/2) and watch your dogs weight and poop. you can adjust it as necessary. also if you switched over suddenly from proplan to EP that could cause a tummy upset but that usually results in runny poo, not bulky ones! lol..
  15. i disagree with dogmad. i find dry food only to be an extremely effective way of feeding my basset x and my housemate's amstaff. i work in a pet supply store and also have not had any issues with recommending this way of feeding premium dry foods. they are formulated to be fed as a complete diet and the dogs look fantastic. she is probably slightly too skinny bcoz she's so active but looks really healthy and happy other than that. Dogs stomach's are a lot more simple than ours and changing the diet too often results in fussy eaters and stomach upsets. it's also a lot easier cleaning up the 'mess' in the backyard if you are feeding a concentrated food. Occasionally i'll give my dog some fresh meat, chicken necks etc as a treat but they don't need it. also, settrlvr said that a lot of dogs don't like hills science diet?? what do you base this information on? i've sold tons of it and vets the world over wouldn't be recommending it if turns out dogs weren't eating it! most of the premium pets foods (incl science diet) have a money back guarantee so don't let the fact the bags are expensive turn you off it bcoz you can always return them (even half empty) if you aren't happy with it. Plus there's the added bonus of the food having a lower cost per day compared to the 'cheaper' dry foods like supercoat AND less time spent preparing your own foods and more time to spend playing with the dogs! Sorry this is a bit of a ramble and kinda off topic but i wanted my opinion known about some of the reply posts. now to the POINT of the topic, lol, elly&lilly you could keep her on the sciencediet but upgrade her to the active formula for some more fat in the diet if she gets lots of exercise. but dogs are not meant to be fat and some just don't eat much and still look healthy. if she's one of those dogs i wouldn't worry too much about her size, my baby is quite skinny but that's just how she's built i think.
  16. that's really interesting information, could it be stickied???

  18. I just noticed a few weeks back that fly's were hanging out on the ends of my 6mnth old GSD's rather large ears when I touched them a small amount of dots of blood came off on my fingers the little b*stards have been biting them so I got this product off the vet Ilium Fly Ointment 50gm the fly's hate it haven't touched his ears since it's only about $7 and lasts for ages. Don't know of any home remedies though sorry ? there's a product by virbac called septicide. it's an antibiotic cream with insecticide. i find it's good for wounds but not so good for keeping the flies away. just make sure you wear gloves when you apply it bcoz it stains ur hands yellow for a bit.
  19. hi, i think no one else has mentioned it but when my dog was a baby and being naughty i used to hold her snout closed and say NO quite forcefully, then turn away from her. it stopped her barking very quickly. esp when her barking would bring me out on the back steps just to reprimand and then stand there ignoring.. it might take a few days but don't give in! hope this helps!! good luck!
  20. pretty much straight away, i've found! it's a good way to bond with ur puppy, esp when ur giving food as a reward (i.e. livertreats) bc0oz ur starting off being the dominant one, whereas some ppl give about a week or so b4 they train and by then the puppy has already tried to establish it's order in the pack.
  21. if the mange is due to a dietry problem then that might be it?? but i have a basset x who's tuymmy rumbles even though i'm giving her enough food so it might not be anything to worry about... good luck tho, puppies are the BEST
  22. yeah we did this with my housemate's amstaff. when he jumps (which is all the freaking time) we just say NO real loud and turn away. he gets the message real quick. we just hope one day he'll LEARN the behaviour and not jump ever! i don't think there's a chance that'll ever happen though. lol. stupid dog...
  23. umm and sometimes the medicated shampoo's can make it worse, especially if they are really strong ones. sometimes it could be a meat allergy. switch from beef to chicken or kangaroo meat-based diet. you have no idea the amount oof ppl who used to come to my shop saying their dog was scratching. if their dog ate a beef based diet i'd suggest switching it to kangaroo and it worked most of the time.
