My pomeranian does this as well when he is excited during play. If he goes too crazy I tell him to settle and the clacking quickly turns to attempted licking!

Heel Position For Toy Breeds
tunagirll replied to Zug Zug's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My pom heels next to me, about just under half a metre away. I find this works great for me, as I don't trip over him when turning left! -
Thanks for that, I already do the go wees and rewards thing, and I don't punish him for going in the house - though I will tell him no if I catch him in the act. I am not sure where I am going wrong. Yesterday I had him out on the lead for nearly half an hour to go to the toilet and he held on until we got inside and bang! on the carpet.

I thought that might be a problem with my pom, so instead I put his collar and lead on and carried him to the local park (no other dogs about). Then I set him down in the middle of the park and let him mosey along on the lead. It worked well. I also tried to teach him to respect the collar a bit. When he didn't want to come along I would give a pulling tug on the collar and then release, and small ones too, trying to keep the lead loose and help him grasp what as wanted. He screeched the first couple of times he was 'woman handled' but he got it really quick and now he will walk along nicely.

My pomeranian puppy is now 5 months old and I have had him for about 6 weeks. For some reason in the last week he has decided it's okay to go to the toilet in the house. We had an accident or two while he was being toilet trained but he was pretty good - but now it's like he won't go outside on the grass unless he's busting, and holds it until we get inside. There have been a couple of times where he has come right in and just pissed on the carpet within a minute after 10 minutes outside. He is put in his crate each night and again now it seems he is preferring to piss on the blanket bedding under the crate instead of on his toilet tray. My hair is going gray I can take him out for pees and poos every hour but it seems he just wants to play on the grass and wait to go inside to toilet. If I have him on a lead he just lies down or looks for a weed or bit of stick to play with (I don't walk around with him). The crate is a metre square and I'm considering re-doing crate training but halving the size and removing the tray so he is more likely to hold it until morning. Any suggestions welcomed!

A Trainers Debate With The Rspca
tunagirll replied to Rom's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I am not a dog trainer but have a lot of experience training horses and the first thing that came to mind reading the RSPCA's response was that horses have been domesticated for a very long time as well and selectively bred but they still retain strong herd flight instincts. If you wave a bag at it it will still run away. We selectively breed animals easier to work with, that are more useful, and good to get along with, but at the end of the day a dog is still a dog with millions of years of primal instincts, as is the horse. Saying it isn't so doesn't make it not so; dogs and horses can't read lol -
I would love to come but I'm worried that my puppy would be too small for the class (5 month old Pom). Also I am a novice dog trainer, I can teach sit and lie down etc but no expert.

Yes, I use 'go wees' as his toilet word now and he knows as soon as I put him on the grass that it's business time. He gets little bits of cut up Schmackos as his reward as well as lots of praise. It's not unusual now to see him stop and try to drain every last bit of wee he can to get an extra tidbit lol I have to carry him to the grass on vet's orders he's not to do much walking yet. I keep him on the leash so he can't run off and play. I will wait until Christmas holidays and then let him wander the living room and put his tray down closer to the laundry door, and 'walk' him to the tray every hour or so to do wees. Do you think that will work okay? I think I am mainly worried that it is too much to be 'inside' toilet training and 'outside' toilet training at the same time.

My pomeranian puppy is now 5 months old and I have had him at home for a month. He broke his leg in transit (long story) so he is still crated after surgery in a square metre pen and will continue to be for at least another 2 weeks. Right now as I work fulltime the routine is first thing after I get up, I take him outside and ask him to do wees. He does this within 5 minutes for a reward, so he has 'got it'. Then breakfast, and I take him outside again. He goes back into his crate after cuddles and gets his toilet tray with newspaper for the day. He usually goes wees and poos on the tray and when I get home I clean it up (he is very happy to see me!). Then he gets dinner and I take him outside. During the evening I will try to remember to take him out each hour or so for a piddle. Then I put him to bed in his crate and put the tray in with him for the night (which gets cleaned in the morning). So that is the routine right now and it seems to be going well. Now ultimately I want to be able to leave him out of his crate and have him go to his tray if he needs to go wees or poos. His crate is in the living room and I want him to go to the laundry so the tray is not on the carpet. He will be crated when nobody is home inside and when someone is home he will be loose inside. I will still take him outside to go toilet after breakfast and dinner. With a couple of weeks crating still to go, what is the next logical step to help him progress to where I ultimately want him to be? I can't decide becuase it's a bit tricky as I can't let him 'hold it' when he is in his crate, due to on occasion having to stay in there a full day with the toilet tray. Thanks for any advice
