  3. I bought the 5D from digital rev - i had to pay duty on it which i was expecting but apparently digital rev has been pulled up a few times for incorrectly marking their packages and trying to get them to slip through customs so they're pulling aside 50% of all the packages that come into the country from digital rev no matter what price it has recorded on the declaration. Not sure if it's the same as DWI but I'm expecting to pay the duty on it so I factored that into the cost.

That being said, I also bought a battery grip, extra battery and 2 SD cards when i bought the 5D so it was a pretty big haul in the end! I'm just buying the 7D this time. I might look into a battery grip for it later for my all day video shoots (another plus of having a 7D - slow mo video - 50fps WHOOT!!) but I think i'm pretty much set :)

Now I just need to save up for the couple of lenses I want :)

  4. I just spoke to them - apparently they need me to authorise the payment and give them a land line number for customs when it comes through. Nothing wrong with the payment itself :)

Now I just need to wait for customs to call. I'm very excited to see how it performs as opposed to my 5D - can't wait for high speed continuous shooting! :)

  5. You can burn to viewable DVD in something like i-movie (on mac) or nero. I'm not sure what settings to use though - I've never just taken a raw movie and done it. All of my stuff is converted, then edited and then converted again.

Thanks for the advice Shell. What do you mean about all of your stuff being converted?? I think I need to do a whole lot more researching!!

Oh sorry! I edit in final cut pro - which doesn't handle h.264 particularly well because it's compressed. I convert it to apple prores 422 which is an uncompressed file type and then edit with that, then export it out of final cut, usually back into an h.264 so i can upload to the net :)

I only do it like that because I'm a producer/editor so everything i shoot is made to be edited. My work flow is overly complicated for someone who just wants to shoot some video :)

  6. In regard to video - you are buying an SLR. If you want good video capability, more than 5 minutes, then you ought to buy a video camera. None of them do video brilliantly. (They do ok, but not at the quality that people expect them to). (My DSLR is too old to have video capability.)

Um, I work in TV and I use it to produce videos for broadcast. There is an entire episode of house filmed on a 5D mark II. They are industry standard now and do fantastically well. Every DOP I know owns a 5D or a 7D and loves it. They've revolutionised shooting on a budget.

Here's a couple of things I've shot on it for lifestyle you - they are both nationally broadcast spots.

  7. 70-200mm 2.8L - second hand it's not that expensive, less than $1000.

I was considering the 70-200mm f/2.8 or f/4, you'd say the 2.8 is definitely worth the extra money?

I've only ever used the f/2.8, though I think poocow has the f/4 and likes it. I use mine mostly around the f/3.5 mark so the f/4 isn't really suitable for me :) I would like to upgrade mine eventually but it's a GORGEOUS lens and I love it. I'm not in a huge rush. I have a bunch of other stuff I want first.

I bought it to photograph dog sports but I've used it for a lot of portraits too and it's beautful :)
