  1. Didn't think so. The dogs have been doing well. I am guessing I have to do this at EVERY meal time?
  2. I have a 10 yr old Shih Tzu cross Maltese that I think is fear aggressive to other dogs. She wasn't properly socialised when young and she doesn't seem to know how to greet another dog at all. I have introduced another female pup last year which she eventually learnt to get along with and even have great games-all aggression stopped. However now I have a 12 week old male AMstaff pup. She is very fearful of him. Even if he comes up to sniff she is growling and snapping and her bottom jaw quivers. They can walk together ok and also sleep on the lounge together fine. When he is bounding around or jumping she gets hysterical. She is also a barker at other dogs when walking. I have tried everything with her and she just won't stop. She is better on the lead by herself but still barks if she sees another dog. I am worried I am stressing her out as I found out she is not well after I got the new pup. What I have been doing is: stopping Halston from jumping on her, I call him away to make him sit and reward him, or if he won't leave it he gets a time out. If she is snapping and won't calm down I put her in her own space until she wants to come back and sit with us. I try to do this calmly Halston is being good but is not great at backing off when she snaps at him. He just rolls over and squirms around or makes his terrier play noises at her. The more she carries on the more it seems to make him want to chase her around. I guess he needs to learn to back off-how do I teach him this? I also need to learn to teach her to calm down! Argh I don't want to make the situation worse. I am doing TOT with them (which Coco and Halston are the best at!!). I also will try and enforce NILIF.
  3. My 11 month old pup still makes mistakes. I found crating at night really helped as did teaching her a pee command so I could make her go before bed etc. To do this I just waited till she did a wee in the right place and then quickly said "good wee" and made a hand gesture (I use a point), then give a treat. I knew I had her when she would run out and wee and then look straight at me. Sometimes she even does fake ones (all action, no wee) just to get the treat or praise hehe. Now I can point and say "go wee" and she will--on most ocassions
  4. My pup used to a lot. I think she still does sometimes. My family was horrified but I told them its a natural behaviour. I think she is growing out of eating her own. But Kangaroo poo seems to be a delicacy *ew*
  5. No mention of mange she said she had demodex mites, which I have been reading about-as a cause of mange. I had only heard of demodex as a possible cause of rosacea in humans. She has no loss of hair, she just had some redness on her tummy which I thought was dermatitis from insect bites because it has cleared up alot now the weather has cooled off a bit. The antibiotics have cleared the infection up alot. Her tummy has no redness at all. Hmm seems like a similar treatment that can work for rosacea!! I have heard that sulfur can be irritating in itself though. I might try the dermaleen if it remains a problem, but at the moment the flakes have cleared. I was putting emu oil on her tummy which is a very good anti-inflammatory but she thought it was tasty and would lick it off LOL. I use it on my own skin and she goes nuts licking it off me too. I am definitely keen on adding some extra essential fats to the diets of all my dogs. Have you heard of using coconut oil to help with skin conditions? I will also look into advantix, but my dogs all have the yearly heart worm injection (which I am now rethinking due to possible toxicity). My main prob is the cost of advantix because I need to give it to them fortnightly because of the ticks x 3 dogs = $$$ At the moment I buy frontline extra large dogs and dose it out myself which is much more cost effective! ETA: just found some dermaleen on clearance for $5 a bottle--bought the last four
  6. What does the advocate do? They have to have frontline on them 24x7 because we live in an area full of paralysis ticks. I have lost two pets to them already!
  7. Hi, My little pup has been diagnosed with mites on her belly which caused an infection. She is on antibiotics for it. She also had blackheads!! Heaps of them-I saw the spots I just didn't think dogs got em She also gets very itchy ears but after a skin scrape the vet didn't find the cause. So are there any supps or alernative things I could give her. I must say after joining this forum only this week, my dogs have been switched to a mainly raw diet with some biscuits every few days. She has capsicum and bits of pumpkin, pear or any other fruit or veg as a snack. I even caught her chewing on a fresh chilli I am always amused by the fact she loves her veges. Her and my Amstaff loved their pumpkin flesh and seeds tonight LOL I was thinking fish oils might help as I find this is the case for my sensitive skin. What form do you give the fishies in? I tried giving her some coconut oil because its another great fat but she ate to much and was vomiting the whole next morning!
  8. Can't wait to try this out with my three. My two older dogs do sit and wait for their food until I say OK but I am going to implement the method exactly as prescribed so I get full control. It will be very helpful for my new AMstaff pup!! So I know I have to feed the three dogs separately so no distractions--does it matter what order-oldest to youngest dog??
  9. What is the best age to desex a male pup?
  10. That was really interesting read! I have a question though. I have a 10 yr old dog that does not tolerate other dogs well. Its my fault because she was not well socialised. She has been able to interact and become friends with a 10 mth old pup and a dog my mum got. She def. hates dogs jumping and being boisterous. She does bark and is fearful of dogs when we are walking, although not always. It seems to be big dogs she doesn't like.?? So how should I let her behave around our new AMstaff pup. He has not been too bad with her but she has been growling and showing teeth to tell him to back off constantly. Is this ok? He doesn't jump he just wants to greet her I think. My better socialised pup let him sniff her etc. However I now realise that my 10 mth old has been exhibiting quite rude behaviour to the older dog i.e. stalking and pouncing on her, but she puts up with it. Argh wish I spoke dog!
