  1. Wow Neo-mercazole is the same med I was on-till I had an allergic reaction. Now I am having my thyroid removed. Isiss hopefully once they remove it your doggy will feel alot better and then should have to take a thyroxine replacement. Hugs and pats to your pup xx
  2. Just got the news that she is fine now!!! She lost a couple of teeth and I haven't found out about the lump but at least she is awake and ok
  3. No. It all sounds really bad though doesn't it. I took her in to be clipped and get vaccines done and the vet found the lump. I knew she needed a teeth clean (but didn't realise they were so bad I have had her since I was 17 and didn't get her desexed early on which I now really regret ;) She really has always been a much loved little girl
  4. That's interesting. Did he say anything about the use of a Halti?
  5. So I just dropped my little Shih Tzu x Maltese (Coco) off at the vets She is having a lump in her mammary gland removed, having her teeth cleaned and also getting desexed! All at the ripe old age of 10 I have all my fingers and toes crossed that she will pull through the anesthetic. I am also hoping they don't find any more lumps Come on old girl you can make it.....
  6. To the Nowra club? yes that would be good but my minds about 99% made up on Dapto
  7. where was that at valby? It was at Berry. I'm going to ring the Dapto school tomorrow cause they haven't emailed me--we might just go straight to a proper obedience class. An old friend from school who is Delta accredited runs a puppy preschool in Nowra but I don't know when the next will run.
  8. Good luck!! I actually have hyperthyroidism cause by Grave's disease and autoimmune disease. I'm getting my thyroid taken out at the end of the month. Hopefully cancer's not the cause in your dog. I was on tablets to control the thyroid but had a bad allergic reaction. My doggy is having an op tomorrow to have a lump removed too. *fingers crossed* for us.
  9. So I took Halston to a local puppy preschool. He was trying to interact in his usual staffy way and I was trying to let him play but making sure he backed off if the other dog had enough. Anyway then the trainer said what you can do is..and then proceeded to try and alpha roll Halston Just for trying to play a bit boisterous--and actually he wasn't being bad at all!! So needless to say we won't be going back
  10. thats great! They have the meet and great classes for beginners every week so you could come anytime. The other 2 DOL people are in the beginners class so you'll get to be with them after the 1st week. LOL, Yeah I'm one of the slackers - god I would hate having to try and stick a halter on Jemima - I've tried all sorts of introductions of one and it just drives her totally insane (well, more insane than normal ) - I think she'd do herself so much harm in one of those - the way she leaps and carries on sometimes. Valby, look out for a mad ridgeback puppy as well (well, she's nearly 8 months and is probably nearly full size) when you come along - that's me! Caroline Julie, would love to hear about Steve's training - I am keen to get Jemima along to the next drive training workshop. Can't wait to see the ridgeback pup!!
  11. Control unleashed is fairly indepth stuff Crate Games are perfect another suggestion is Shaping Success by Susan Garett has some great puppy games to play suitable for dogs of all ages really... Greg Derrett foundation Agility... even if your not planning on agility has some great relationship building stuff in there... Thanks!! I like the idea of DVDs so I can actually see what's meant to be going on I look into Shaping success.
  12. Thanks 4paws!! I have just contacted them about obedience. I will def. let you know when we can join in!! That's crap about the halter. With the Nowra club its for all newbies : I'm starting with Halston and MJ at the classes and then once I can see Steve in September I will take Coco (the troublemaker LOL) to obedience too.
  13. Hmm this is what the email response said- "The cost is $80, which includes a joining fee, membership of the club for the current year, and a Black Dog haltie, compulsory for beginners." Its the Nowra club. I am at Shoalhaven Heads but work in Wollongong. I am thinking of going to the Dapto club. I think its silly to insist on using a Halti even for beginners when as everyone has stated a lot of dogs won't need it/doesn't work!
  14. That sounds really good. I love the idea of trialling the two lessons first-and taking them alternative weeks! I'm going to look at those remedies too, can't hurt We've all just been for a long walk..Coco and me, then MJ, Halston and me-phew I know I'm tired, but ahh there is peace and quiet
  15. Thanks I am going to see Steve later in the year Do you use the regular Rescue Remedy? I might investigate the Nerve Tonic. I have seen some other Vit b products for pets to ease their nerves. I'm dropping into the vets tomorrow so I might talk to her about what to use. I am haven't heard back from a local obedience school yet-where I would like to take my AMstaff but might have to look into places I could take Coco to get her used to other dogs. I brought this one off ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...IT&ih=007.I normally give this one on the morning that we go to training and when we get there, also during class if needed and also have this formula that you give each night ,it's the courage formula http://www.floweressences.com.au/dog.htm#courage I give my girl 1/2 teaspoon of brewers yeast each night with her tea Which club are you looking at? I was looking at the club at Nowra but am unsure because they request the use of a Halti. I posted a new topic about this. How do you find the Dapto club. I lived in Horsley until a year ago and never new Maybe I should make the drive up Saturdays (think this is when the class is held). I really interested in the Fly Ball. Another issue is I am toying with the idea of taking my 11 month old pup too and I will obviously need my OH to come with us (a dog each) and he works most Saturdays...
  16. I have just contacted a local club and they said the joining fee includes the purchase of a halti which we must use! Is this normal? What do I look for in a good obedience class?? Thanks
  17. Well I'm not a breeder and I would have thought my vet was an expert on all things medically related to my dog--that's why I pay them! I can see why they aren't expert on behaviour, nutrition etc but medical treatment yes I do/would trust them My local vet has been terrific in treating my 3 dogs so that's why I'm shocked they wouldn't discuss a well know risk with me. Especially something so common as heart worm treatment. Can someone point me to the scientific evidence on this? I'm not saying I don't believe what you are saying I would just like to be able to discuss it properly with my vet. ETA: were alot of the probs associated in Proheart with dogs that had tested positive for heart worm and the drug was then administered?
  18. That's a good idea! I might try washing the tummy of my girl with some skin issues once day with the Aloveen-rather than give her a full bath
  19. Hi, I have a 10 yr old Maltese x Shih Tzu. I would try and get her to a groomers, possibly one attached to a vet would be good, just in-case she needs sedation to be clipped properly. I think you will find if you get her clipped right off you will have an easier time with her coat. You can get a tool which is like a rake with blades which is good for getting through the mats. I have cut my girls hair with scissors when I moved and hadn't sussed out local groomers-but its tricky when you need to go close to the skin. Mine eat chicken necks and wings and raw meats like kangaroo mince mixed with some good biscuits. She will probably need her teeth checked. Is her breath stinky? If yes she probably needs a proper teeth clean at the vets. Good luck with her and I'm so glad you have taken her on
  20. Are controlled unleashed and the crate training DVD good for beginner training with my 12 week pup and my 11 month pup?
  21. God I never knew any of this about the heart worm. My oldest dog just had the heart worm inj and vaccines my younger pup had the yearly heart worm too I always thought it was safer because I would forget the monthly tabs. Hmmm its a little disheartening the vets didn't mention the risks...
  23. Thanks so much Caroline. I will look at Susan's site. I am thinking of getting a couple of Jean Donaldson books too. I would love to get to Steve's K9 training but just don't think I can get myself up there atm. Yes that's a good point. She does have quality time with us for sure. I have noticed that when we first got the pup she went and hid in the walk-in robe-her safe spot. But now she insists on coming and sitting with us which is good. I am definitely making sure Halston gets time out for jumping on her or not listening when I tell him "leave it". I remove her when she gets hysterical. But like I said I have no idea whether I am doing the right thing. \ ETA: they can both sit on the lounge either side of me peacefully which is great! We spend alot of time doing that-me in the middle on the laptop trying to get some work done LOL
  24. Ahh ok makes perfect sense-will continue at all meals!!
