  1. If you are in Victoria, I'd highly recommend you arrange a consult with Dr. Bruce Syme in Castlemaine.

I don't know why I keep recommending him ..... it will get to the point where he'll be too busy to fit my boy in to his schedule !! LOL

But truly - I travel 2 hours each way to see him when I have something that requires anything other than the standard check.

I would describe him as a 'minimalist' in his attitude to surgery and medications, which means that if he ever told me surgery or drugs were necessary for my boy, I'd believe they were.

Wish i did live in Victoria so i could take her to him. We live in Newcastle 2 hours south of Sydney!

  2. Best place to get answers is your vet. It's pretty hard to diagnose symptoms over the internet...

I have taken her to them numerous times and for 2nd opinions and they say they want to perform exploratory surgery on her. I'm scared to death of this and i do not want to put her through that! She is only a small thing and it is major major surgery!!

I just thought perhaps someone has experienced similar things

  3. My dog has pancreatitias. But i have been noticing lately she sighs and grunts and moves around uncomfortable in the belly sometimes. I really do not think it is her pancreatitias as her symptons for that used to be not wanting to eat and sometimes vomiting.

She still want's to eat, her food. She has a great appetite which she never used to have when her pancreas was flaring. The only other things i notice are that she eats grass a fair bit and her eyes look glassy. I thought perhaps it is Colic or IBD or something. Does anyone elses dog have similar sypmtons or can advise me what it may be?

    Cheers Kris & Lizzy

  4. Yes me too... I think it might be because it was her specialist's intern last time and they obviously hurt her poor old legs as they were shaving them and poking and prodding :o

Perhaps if she is with her specialist she has learned to accept him, and knows him. Lord knows the staff their know us... the receptionist even recognises my voice now and says 'oh you're booking Chloe in right?'. But I like that, I like that they pay her special attention and make a fuss of her

Thanks for your thoughts Lizzy06... how are your issues going (well not YOURS, but if they are our doggies issues then they are ours as well LOL)!!

Also just wanted to add some recent pics of my lovely old girl... I think you'll agree she is so divine :) But I'm totally biased

Kelly that is EXCELLENT WONDERFUL news. Yay for Chloe and you!!! We never give up on our girls and i think it is our constant love and support that makes them pull through their illnesses.

Wow i'm genuinely so happy for you!! that has put a smile on my face. Yes she is such a dear beautiful looking girl. Shes doen't even look all that old to me. She looks very healthy!

So what happens now once you up the medication. When do you take her back for checkups?

Ha ha my vets know me too. I'm actually taking a drive down to Syndey tomorrow with Lizzy to see Barbara from all natural vet care in russel lea. I've had a few phone consults with her but we both agreed it would probably be beneficial for her to actually see and examine her. Hopefully she can pick something else up by going over her as she still has her bad days! My poor babe it is so cruel. She always tries to act so happy and masked that she is not 100% Like you i love her sooooooooooooooo very much and will do anything for her. I cannot imagine the day she is not with me!

But back onto a better note. to chloe and give her lots of pooch smoochies and cuddles from Miss Lizzy and her mumma x x x

  5. Considering her history of pancreatitis it would be worth testing her for exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. It involves a simple blood test. This disease can follow bouts of pancreatitis and causes the cessation of production of the enzymes that break down food in the intestines. The yellow slime may be an oily residue from fats that have not been digested.

    Just a thought.

Yes i thought that but i have her on enzyplex enzymes that she has been on for a year now. So that would stop that from happening i would think?

The thing is i had her on Royal Canin low fat digestive food. When she showed she was in pain i decided to change her diet as i felt that the food just was not working for her so she is only on fish and sweet potato at the moment. The abnormal poop started after being on the new diet. I think besides the poop having the slime on it every now and again she appears to be ok. (her natural vet Barbara from all antural vet care recommended trying her on fish and potato, i have phone consulations with her.)

  6. I think a Vet visit is warranted and take a sample with you.

It could be nothing, it could be a precursor to pancreatitis or it could be something else.

A faecal analysis tells the Vet if there is any blood present, and how well the food is being digested.

Just took a sample to the vet. It is being sent to the lab.... going to cost me $245. I hope i get some kind of answer. I have spent thousands and thousands on this dog!

think they only check for parasites and bacteria so i still might not get an answer of what the muccous stuff is!

  7. Thanks for the replies. Coughing progressed to goose honking (for want of a better description) this morning so we went off to the vets. Diagnosis is an inflamed trachea - mild KC. Lymph nodes are normal and his appetite is still good. I have cough syrup for him and if he worsens in the next few days vet will dispense ABs. He's had a very quiet day rugged up in his jacket as its still winter here in Perth unlike the rest of oz.

I will definitely get some honey in him too but just a little bit. He also suffers from eosinophilic IBD and he's already on metrogyl at the moment from a flair up earlier in the week. Would rather not exacerbate the gut/bowel to add to his troubles!

Clearly you're a good sort AF, I swear he doesn't try to jump in just anyones car! :walkdog:

I just wanted to say that your pooches are adorable!!!!!!!!!!!!! sorry i have nothing useful to say besides that!

  8. Sorry to chat about a yucky topic but my girl has pancreatitas. I have recently changed her diet to fish and sweet potato to see if it stops her flare ups. But lately i have noticed a yellow sludge possibly thick mucous stuff on and sometimes in her poop.

    What would it be?

I'm thinking about taking a sample to the vet as i have noticed it on and off for 1 week now. So i was wondering what do they check for? what tests do the run on it? Also does anyone know a rough price? I've spent thousands on her so i'm hoping it is not very expensive.

  9. Thanks to all for the replies - unfortunately Fraser is not getting better... he has gone downhill throughout the night...

The Emergency Hospital rang me this morning to update me on his progress, he has been vomiting overnight and again this morning with some blood coming up with the liquid. They said he has a severe case of gastro-interitis and that he is still appearing very dehydrated and that fluids are not working as well as they can. (sorry for my vague description, can barely think at the moment!)

They are now in the process of a blood/plasma transfusion to see if this will help - I am due to visit Fraser when I finish work at 1.30 pm and I might quickly rush home before hand and grab some of his old toys that remind him of home. I just hope that he will pull through this and begin to start feeling better - I miss him.

Will have more information as it comes to hand - hopefully he will show signs of improvement when I pay him a visit, the vet mentioned that the blood/plasma transfusion will be completed by the time I come around to see him.

Please keep your fingers, toes or anything else crossed - I just hope that he pulls through - I am just not ready for him to leave yet, that might appear selfish but having only 2.5 years with him doesn't seem long enough...

    Regards, Shaun (sticks1977) :)

Oh iam terribly sorry to hear this news. I hope he picks up very very soon and you get him under control!.

My baby Lizzy suffers from pancreatitas. She has had multiple multiple attacks and she is only 3. First started for her at around 1.5 years. (after being fed a treat from china) Poor baby. I understand you not wanting to say goodbye to him. I'm the same with my girl i always thought i would have her for 17 years now the future is so uncertain. I just hope you have so much more luck with controlling and keeping him controlled than the luck i have. I love my girl more than anything. I cry myself to sleep most nights worried about her.

I'm in the middle of debating whether to put her in for invasive surgery for biopsies to see if we can find something else causing her attacks. You are lucky you have insurance. I do not and have already spent many thousands. If i put her in for the surgery it will cost another $1500.00. But i will do anything to try and help her. I'm just worried that something may go wrong. She had an attack a couple of days ago and she is so not well at the moment. I have started her on a new diet to see if that helps but she is not picking up as yet unfortunately.

Again i'm so so so sorry. This is something i would not wish on my worst enemies dog it is a cruel and pathetic disease. I hope you he picks up very soon and you never have to go through it ever again.

Kris and the gorgeous miss Lizzy.

  10. Any surgery carries risks and I am sure your Vets will do everything they can to mitigate those risks. I'd speak more with your Vet about her illness and the surgery. Let them know you are frightened.

Have you ever taken her to a specialist veterinary hospital?

I have taken her two two different vets. There are no specialists around where i live. I would have to take her 2 hours to find one (sydney)and stress makes her worse. I have also been having phone consults with a vet in Syndey, all natural vet care. I have spent a fortune with no success. I work full time and have a mortgage, it is hard to take her somewhere else and go through explaining everything again.

    I've tried almost everything.

  11. The chicken treats info adds a different perspective. There were a few vets that were looking into the health issues after this. I think one was at Sydney Uni?? What state are you in?? If you search, you should be able to find info on here about it.

Yes i contacted them and they told me that because it wasn't just her kidneys affected and a certain level in her urine was not detected they wouldn't accept the treats caused her health issues.

Even though my vet agrees they were behind her problems. She loved those treats and only weighs 4.5kg. I know they are behind her problems!

  12. Has pancreatic cancer been ruled out?

They don't think it would be as it started when she was 1.5 years old after being feed chicken treats from china and she is now 3.

I think explority surgery is on it's way but iam scared to death to put her through it cry:

I love this little dog like you would not believe

  13. Have you tried raw food at all? Kangaroo is very low in fat.

I tried home cooking for her at one stage i was alternating between kangaroo/chicken with vegetables. She did ok on this but as sick again after a couple of months so i stopped it.

Somebody recommended fish and potato. I do not know what fish to get though? I think they said Tuna but do i get it in the cans or fillets i have no idea?

  14. Hi all i need help urgently.

My girl Lizzy is 3 and has been suffering from pancreatitas for half of her life now. I don't know how to control her anymore. All i feed her is royal canin low fat digestive food and she still seems to be in pain the last week. I get her well for a couple of months and then the pain starts. Has anyone got any other suggestions on what to try and feed her with?

Ive seen 3 vets and two recommended cutting her open to see if there is anythign else going on and taking biopsies. This is major surgery and iam scared to death to put her through this. But she also cannot go on being in pain!

    Can anyone help me???

please i'm so upset and desperate at the moment!

  15. Poor little puppy - I would be beside myself with worry.

I know that you can give asprin and disprin to an adult dog in certain circumstances, but I have never heard of Codeine being given - let alone to a pup.

I would be getting the poor little thing to a vet asap otherwise she might not have a puppy when she gets home.

Are you serious? i always thought/ was told that aspirin kills dogs... even the slightest amounts?

I'm always paranoid as my other half will drink aspirin and then leave the glass on the bench. I'm come along behind him so lizzy doesn't jump on the bench and lick the glass!

I thought that was a big NO!!!?

  16. I started a similar thread not long ago in General Discussion - if you do a search you might find it has some great ideas.

Due to Sash's sensitive tummy, I made her 'cake' out of Advance canned food (which she is accustomed to) and pieces of cheese which she loves and are a massive treat for her. So it was pretty basic (but tummy friendly) and I made it into a nice design for her... she loved it!!!

ha ha that is adorable Kelly.

Good thinking. Hopefully next year lizzy will be well entruly under control and i may do a simialr thing for her.

  17. We used to let my girl have a small piece of birthday cake, that was for her 1st b-day. For her 2nd birthday she got a bbq chicken with a candle in it and ate some of the chicken we all shared it. On friday it will be Lizzy's 3rd birthday and all she will be getting is her usual cooked sweet potato. She suffers from pancreatitas so everything else is out of the question until i have her diet worked out and under control. Just thought i would say though that i have a very very smart little dog and she loves opening presents. She tears in to the paper and just wants what is inside, if she gets a toy she bolts off and plays with it.... it is so adorable!

I have already wrapped up her presents and she is getting a beautiful new snuggly bed. a s/s bowl and a ball. I'm on a tight budget this year after all her vet expenses My mum will come over with presents for her too... probably toys. We will sing happy birthday to her and then she will open them all up and have the time of her life. ha ha

We will probably take her down to the park after work for a run and possibly to the beach on the weekend if it is nice weather!!! so spoilt!

  18. It's a prescription-only drug, so you need to go to the vets to get it. Perhaps if they know you well they could give you the whole course in one go to give at home (in four seperate syringes, which you would need to keep in the fridge), after the vet has seen you for an initial consultation, so you would save on an injection fee each week you go in? It's not the drug that's the expensive part, it's the dispensing & injecting fees.

My boy is on Pentosan (same type of drug) and we were advised to do the four weekly injections every 6 or 12 months, depending on progress.

It is expensive, but after two years of trial & error, it really is the only thing that works for him.

I would caution against buying it yourself...it's illegal to buy prescription drugs without a script :(

My dogs vet said it didn't need to be kept in the fridge. Just to store it in the cupboard.
