  1. I would only run if you and your dog are comfortable in the situation. Maybe go down with the dog one week as a spectator, see how it goes and run the next week? I run with a running group and some of them take the park run quite seriously. I heard the comment the other day that the Canning River Park run is one of the fastest courses and this was from someone who holds the record for the fastest Park Run in Perth. I cant wait to get down and try the Canning River Parkrun..now just have to get over an injury and be allowed to do 5 kms!
  2. A friend of mine is a stay at home mum and they live on blackbutt. Ill get her to keep an eye out. The traffic can get really busy around there, I really hope she is found soon.
  3. I cant make any promises but I can ask my Dad if he might be interested. Is she very active? Dad doesnt have a big place but does like to walk. Dad talks about getting another dog after our family dog died about 4 years ago and he used to walked out dog but I dont know what his thoughts are now.
  4. Get yourelf a copy of the Gwen Bailey book The Perfect Puppy. It's not perfect and having the support of a good trainer is always better but it will give you a good overview of what to expect of a puppy.
  5. We lost out 22 month old GSP to histiocytic sarcoma in 2010. It was no more than about 2 weeks between diagnosis and us losing her and 3 weeks from initial symptoms. It was an absolutely horrifying experience which I would not wish on anyone and we were willing to throw anything at it. You are incredibly lucky you were able to get treatment so quickly for Frodo and that it was so successful. I couldnt fault the treatment and support given by Murdoch and Dr Fleur James - it was just too agressive for anyone to do anything. I dont have any contacts but I totally agree with the need for more and more cancer research and I really hope the information from Leila's case was utilised by Murdoch and made avaliable to others. We havent yet got another dog so we dont even have a regular vet we could pass this on to.
  6. CareyJ thank you for your information. I was quoted $5000 - $6000 for 6 months chemo, Im at a loss why yours costs so much in just 2 weeks, did you pay in full upfront? Im pleased to hear they paid you claim and only in 10 days, Ive heard some people it has taken months to get reimbursed. Im sorry you lost your girl Leila's enlarged lymph nodes were originally diagnosed as kennel cough by our local vet because it was going around our area and she was so young. A week later I came home and her stomach was enormous - the first thing I thought of was bloat so I rushed her down to the emergency vet at Murdoch uni on our vets orders. She spent 2 days there having tests which accounted for at least $2000, then there was the chemo. We were quoted something very similar to you for just the chemo. We had to race back a week later after hours with an infection at her bone marrow biopsy site, another round of chemo, then 2 days of intensive care. It added up very quickly. I always think that if we caught it a week or so earlier things just might have been different but given the type of cancer it was we did all we could. And I think it was an extreme scenario. We get a new puppy in about 3 weeks which has been 2 years coming and a lot of research. Leila might be gone, but she will never be forgotten.
  7. Our thoughts are with you going through this. xxoo. I really hope the treatment goes well. We lost our 21 month old GSP to Histiocytic sarcoma (similar to lymphoma but way more agressive). It was first diagnosed as lymphoma with a positive survival rate with chemo. We started chemo immediately as soon as we got partial diagnosis but had to change the treatment. Unfortunately it wasnt successful. We spent about $7000 in 2 weeks and Pet Insurance Australia paid out 100% minus $100 excess within 10 days with no questions asked. We had only had the insurance for about 6 months. This was the first lot of pet insurance we have had, best thing we ever did. At least we tried. The Vet was very clear in her report which I think made a difference. They now only pay out 80% for any of their claims. It all happened so quickly but the 2 courses of chemo Leila had didnt affect her much - it was the progression of the bloody awful disease. I wish it was Lymphoma so at least we could have had a chance at fighting it. From all I read, complimentary medicine and diet can make a huge difference. StaffyLuv is a big advocate of this - her thread on Ollie was very helpful when I was researching it. Good luck.
  8. This is all great information :) I was worried about how flying us and the new puppy back from Sydney was all going to work but from this thread and the other one in General I am feeling like it isnt going to be hard at all. The jet lag from 3 weeks in the US and a puppy might be a lot harder!
  9. I've just got the news that 10 GSP puppies were born in NSW today and hopefully one will be coming to live with us.... !!! We've been waiting over 12 months for a litter from this breeder.
  10. Depending on the suburb I might be able to help. The location would be the determining factor.
  11. Thanks OSoSwift- I'm off to see if I've been to visit their website before and if they have puppie! We are on a waiting list with a breeder in NSW but she doesnt breed often and she had a litter mid-year. She was considering a litter late 2011 or early 2012. She is a lovely lady with heaps of GSP experience. Unfortunately we missed out last time because she only had one girl in the litter. It was probably for the best because we have been so busy - OH organised the BBQ for the Queen though Bunnings and we are getting married next weekend. Hopefully we can fill the hole soon - It's amazing that we have been dog-less for 12 months - it's just not right!
  12. I think that is what I like about them....And Leila definately was like that and a few people on here will agree! I'm lead to believe that they arent all ike that but I dont necessarily belive them - maybe you just get a different take on reality! I do know a few crazy whippets though!
  13. Where would you get a GSP from OSoSwift? We'll be ramping up our search for a puppy in a few weeks and any recommendations would be appreciated. We are definately getting one from the eastern states and have made a few enquiries - we just need to find the right one now and one which is having a litter with girls after we missed out earlier in the year! I know a few people who have both whippets and GSPs, they seem to go well together.
  14. I am so sorry to hear about Ollie. His story and your advice were a much needed support for us with Leila. He was truly an inspiration. RIP Ollie.
  15. Wow! theres a lot of banter in here over a chritmas dinner! I got all excited about coming, I've been wanting to go to that restaurant and then got to the date. I'm getting married on the 19th so cant come. Hope you all have a great time.
  16. I did mean would not be happy...typing is a bit dodgy.
  17. I can confirm this - OH is organising it, it's his baby! I told him people wouldn't be happy with it right next to the kennel zone.... Edited as my typing made my comment the opposite to what I meant
  18. No puppy for us this time Always disapointing when you miss out but the right on will come along I'm sure We will probably get first pick of the next litter though if we are prepared to wait
  19. Pet Insurance Australia (PIA) is the same - only looked as a result of this thread as we are getting a puppy. PetPlan still appears to be 100% though unless someone can point me in the direction of where it says 80%. Their premiums are quite a bit higher.
  20. Tomorrow. I have no doubt he is going to have huge paws and he is going to be much bigger than Leila was but sounds like he could be just as mad.
  21. oh and if you want to see just how cute he is, go into the puppies for sale and he is the one at the bottom of the page under German Shorthaired Pointers.
  22. OMG! We are very close to getting a puppy....its a bit scary We have done it all before I'm still worried, such a big decision. I was talking to a GSP breeder in NSW in April, who is lovely and she was expecting a litter. We wanted a girl but the litter was only 4 - 1 girl and 4 boys. The girl was already spoken for. She had homes for all of the puppies but one couple pulled out because they were pregnant so she has one 12 week old boy needing a home....he is so cute! Why not hey?!?!? She has a lady coming to look at him tomorrow but she said we are the preference even though we are all the way over here.
