  1. um where did i say keep the dog locked in for 10 years....i thought the dog would be walked and let out under supervision.

i meant as a short term thing to keep the child safe....and to make sure to be sure child cannot access the dog without an adult....as i would not want my child playing with a dog that may bite.

  2. i was coming in here to tell a story about the night my dally bit my child.

they were wrestling on the floor and getting very rough as a 12yo and a 18mo dally can be... next thing the dog turns child sort of head buts the dog while his mouth is open. his face was bleeding and and required a trip to casuality... to get glued up.

it was wrong place at the wrong time.

it sounds like this jrt was wrong place wrong time... but he is like most jrt who have their own way a lot... they tend to take charge.

as a child i was attacked by dad foxie rabbiting dog... i did nothing wrong but the dog was aggressive and lived out his life here, but outside our house yard he was chained up as he frankly could not be trusted. so if your friend wants to keep the dog she needs to contain him so her child is safe... a dog run might be the answer here.

  3. my dogs mostly pb cast offs... were all rehomed free to us....well the small ones.

the owners saw the sucker tattoed on my forehead.

the 2x dallys one was bought out of the paper and i don't doubt if i had not bought him he would have ended up in the pound...

the other was rehomed via the general section of dol... she was not your ordinary rescue... but now she is not your ordinary dog either.

should i have bought a pup.... i could have but i have had many puppies over the years.... and just did not want to be in that boat again.... if i could not have found a retread... i was making puppy enquiries as well.

both the dallies although neither have papers with them now.... they were pb not part bred...i thought it better to take on a dog with problems as i can cope, and it would give a dog who had failed in his relationship another chance.

although dallies area relatively cheap breed.

  4. the meter man reads my meter and i have never heard of a problem..... often they aren't here tho.

my lot would not only let burglers in and help them they would be friend them and go with any intruder.... ;)

unless the burgler was overly nasty they would escape unscathed and we have up to 6 dogs of differing sorts..

  5. then you guys might not be so suprised when little kids think that our dallys are just like the cartoon dallies they see on the telly and they run up to hug them.

leo loves it.....you can poke him in the eye and he would come back for more.

poor sophie is a bit human wary and finds strangers hard if they throw them selves at her.

i hate kelpies/working dogs as a kids who saw lots born and disposed off... hate them and all they represent on a farm... :mad :mad

  6. we have a caravan and took our 5 away with us for the whole time.

i loved it first holiday with dogies. most van parks won't have too many douges and so we would not be allowed but we found spots every where.

last time i went o/s the mil came out to our place to feed the dog and found her dieing of snake bite...hence i now feel intensely guilty and cannot leave my dogs with her as she worries about something happening.

this year may be the first time they might have to go to the kennels.

  7. in fact the OH was talking about doggie health insurance after the snake bite...but the premiums per month would send you broke... so i might try to do a pm deposit instead.

    Hi voloclydes. :)

There is a health insurance plan for dogs and cats on the Woolworths Frequent Flyer Program.

I think it has to be the cheapest I've seen.

    Px

yeah but they don't do fleet prices and we do own a fleet of hot digity doggies...

    2x matains

    2jrt and foxie cross

    oh and heniz chi....

the conditions also say said douge needs to be less than 7..only 3 are less than 7..the dollar works out about 100pm....

so i have been thinking about saving some cash.... then it can go on who ever is sick. horses included.

  8. i used to have a pet account... or one more aimed at the horses as they can rack up a bill very easily at the vet...

although these days i find the horses the least expensive of all even tho there is about 11 of em....

theses days with an internet account i could keep track of it a more and make sure there is some money for a rainy day. any little horsey bonuses could go in there.

in fact the OH was talking about doggie health insurance after the snake bite...but the premiums per month would send you broke... so i might try to do a pm deposit instead.

  9. Oh! And another question. What crate size would be suitable for dalmatian? Someone suggested 42"... Really? Saw 42" crate in a pet shop and it looks HUGE.

yeah my 42 inch crate is big enough to out matians in it....

i have a smaller one and they fight if you put them in together....

    we put 2x dals

2x jrt, foxies in the 42 inch crate when we go away in the caravan... it fits on the floor in the table space when folded. they are only crated for sleeping then and keep them out while we have dinner!

at home i have the large crate in the lounge... they all take turns and then if someone is sick well they draw the short straw and live in it.

we don't have a dog bed... oh well in the dogs eyes we do... its call the couch... often the humans sit on the floor so the hot digity doggies can sit on the couch!:rofl:

a crate is a very handy thing and there is not really a hard and fast rule... really its more about what fits in your life more than any thing.

  10. Ignoring the dog?

I come home and jump out of the car and go "Doggies!! Hello Doggies!! Doggies!! Run Doggies Run!!"

I suggest the OP doesn't do this.

This is my OH too - he yells "PUPPIIEEEEEES!!!!" when he comes in then gives butt rubs and scritches, sometimes gets down on the floor and wrestles with them  I'm sure some trainers would have a fit if they saw it :p

 Yep my OH is ten times worse than me  He sends them into a freakin frenzy

same including the OH saying PUUPPIEEEEEEEEESSSS.

our lot well the big dally talks sort of whoo whooing... talking not barking and he does a u turn away from you, just once till he's facing which he then repeats to the other direction till he's u turned about 8 or 9 times.

they do however calm down very quickly and within minutes they are installed on the couch or laying at my feet while i check emails...

  11. well the comment i made about chip reader come from the vet and the local dog catcher.

the council had a larger and i would think newer model the vet had a smaller older model....

it read a newer chip and gave a wrong read. the dog catcher had seen it many times before and it was a scanner glich...this could result in the dog being put in the pound and no owner being contacted.

chips are only good if they work...

side no one of my lot have ever ended up in a pound when lost... due to living a long way from the nearest dog catcher....

they are chipped but only for the times we are out.

  12. ok so to describe my dogs... al dol style based on the husky above...

large white male dog with brown spots farts and is dumb and goofy..

small white female black spots shy does not fart, is related to road runner!

small male dog escapeoligist of the tri coloured varity... follow any one with a crust has been stolen for fun before.

large white /black ferocious snaps when cornered prefers couch...will hunt large kangroos but short legs limit catching ability... unless said roo is lead posioned. (well in dog eyes he is larger)

large escapoligist carries ball has teeth worn to carry said ball with ease... looks like the mask dog or the stilh dog!

did you guys know the average vet buys so many chips and recieves a free scanner to read that brand of chip. they do work on other chips but can refuse to read chips made by other companies....hence some dog will not register.

  13. I have a potentially very sad story - before microchipping. One day I saw a cream Bearded Collie running along a busy road. I grabbed him and took him straight to the RSPCA. I told them he was a Bearded Collie and even wrote it on the form. Someone with their superiour dog breed knowledge corrected my form to say Old English Sheepdog. A few days later I was contacted by the owners and given a bottle of wine and box of chockies and they came to met me. They explained their dog had escaped after a bath and they were frantic. The rang the RSPCA and were told - no Bearded Collies here. The RSPCA thought they meant Rough Collie. After ringing and visiting pounds etc for a few days they decided to check the RSPCA in person. There was their dog called an Old English Sheepdog. They almost lost him - due to a breed-id-error and not checking in person. To me and to them he was so much a Bearded Collie but I guess they are similar to an Old English Sheepdog.

When I found a staffy bitch once (again pre microchips) I rang the pound every day to check on missing dogs and went through the RSPCA lost lists in person. Both the pound and the RSPCA told me to keep her at home as they were both over-run with dogs and no room. She was beautifully trained, fat and healthy, an obvious inside-dog but elderly. We never found her owner after 3 months but I managed to find her a good forever home.

This sort of thing really gets to me. I think people involved in these fields really need to know what they're talking about. That kind of flippant arrogance can lead to disaster. Even if they were to utilise a breed chart it would be better than guessing. I regularly scan shelter adoption pages and the number of clear breed misindentifications I see is abominable. How is anyone to find their JRT if it's been labeled a Fox Terrier? I see crossbreeds labeled as staffies, Kelpies labeled as lab crosses (if it's not black and tan with pointy ears it can't be a Kelpie), plain old mutts being labeled as exotic breeds (some that don't even exist in Australia!) . . . it's mystifying. :mad

I would hate for my Schipp or my Kelpie to end up in some of these places. I could imagine she'd be a Chihuahua or Pom x and he (boofy headed show line dog) would be called a Shepherd or Lab x.

Fortunately, they're not the straying types. :)

However, if they did get out and someone held on to them and if I ever found out who they were I would push for 'theft by finding' and if that didn't work I'd be in touch with my lawyer.

I agree with you to an extent, but as someone who has worked in a pound I have to say, about 60% of the dogs that came through where I was working were cross breeds. Pound staff have to make an educated guess a lot of the time.

We would have people calling looking for their dog and the only info they could give us was "It's brown". This happened MUCH more often than you would think. We used to tell everyone that they HAVE to come in and look for their dog. It's not enough to just call and then blame pound staff when the dog is destroyed.

Yes, some places arent great at breed ID but when you have a cross breed with no ID, what can you do? Also, mistakes will occur, we are humans and we are not perfect and there is always going to be some amount of human error, this is why people need to go in physically. Also in my experience the dodgy breed ID's are much more frequently from Rangers than pound staff. I once had a Ranger with two Chis taking pictures as he was so chuffed to see such small dogs, asking me what they were.

It is up to owners to ID their dogs so that when they come into a pound the workers know without question what the dog is.

I agree that people who don't have their pets ID are partially to blame. I understand having to guess, though if it is a guess I think it's important to use a variety of descriptors just in case.

    "It's brown"

That would get very frustrating pretty quickly.

I hope pound/shelter people always advise people to come in just in case.

at least i can say its got brown spots.... and farts.... no one would keep it after one fart!

  14. On occassion young Clover will be lying on the bed sleeping with the rest of us...when suddenly we get a low growl. "Hark...there's an intruderin our room"...the growl becomes more threatening..."Off with you, she says..I mean business..I'll bite you!"

We turn on the light to see her growling at her own reflection in a mirror!

yeah i relate... except its the dally and he only needs to hear the tractor crossing the neighbours paddock and he will bark and growl frantically from the safety of the couch.

the noise is terrrible... oh and all the doors are open if he wants to go and protect the yard! he is the biggest and the dumbest. what other dog can fall in the dam every day!

its not like it moved or anything... he always pretends like he did it accidentally!

    yeah right!

combine that with the lump his skull from trying to walk under the table without ducking... no he did not get taller nor the table shorter... he came here at 10 months old... ;)

oh well at least he has been super easy to train...

  15. if you get a station wagaon make sure the gas tank is a doughnut or scuba tanks one which goes in the spare tyre hole. the tyre then goes in the back. the tyre takes up less room.

i liked my wagon so did the dogs as they got to travel in ac comfort. i had a cargo barrier and did not use crates. no we did not show... but dogs travel alot with us.

the question really is more a money one which is less in purchase and up keep.

my falcon sw on gas used less than a 4 cylinder on trips... like about $30 for 400km to sydney.

  16. well most of our dogs are retreads...

the 2 dumbmations were older leo 10mo and sophie 2 years.

leo was bought out of the trading post as i did not want a piddling puppy! what i picked up was a piddling older dog.... he did however have a severe kidney infection when i got him... so after he saw a vet and got treated it has never been a drama!

as for being dumb! show him food and he will run thru about 20 or so tricks so he can get the food. he has been the easiest dog i have ever had.

sophie is featured in some threads here she was one of 4 dallies well 5 really.... who were dumped on a dol member. 1 was pts straight away.... no training and terrified... he also would stand and fight...

2 was kept for a time and showed very little aggression and was rehomed but sadly due to circumstance he was pts to. for biting.

3 was sent to kirty and rehomed and is doing well...

4 was sophie who we tryed to rehome but she got protective.... and as she was a no win no keep was returned to us....i have her sitting and shaking hands... she also now comes. from dog that was terrified of humans and would run now to one who will auto roll over for a tummy scruff... seems she is a huge sucess..... although she will never train like leo.... she finds it hard to figure out what you want and will not trial and error... she has been starved (well i feel she had as she was under weight when she came here) so when the food comes out she looses the plot and cannot think past omg food...

sadly that brings us to the last of sophies family number 5... she had advanced breast cancer and did not live out a year.

even with the worst start most dogs can come right with the right home.... often those that don't come right are not in the right home.

  17. Definitely. I've seen her happily chew on far more revolting things than out of date meat, including dead things and old bones she's dug up.

I obviously wouldn't give her some maggot infested, rotting lump but.. you know ;)

on that note as kids we had border collie sheep dogs and dad would often go shoot a few roos fast forward a few days till its really festie and maggot infested....

so doggie eats it maggots and all... throws up and before we could stop her ate the wiggling maggoty puke with great relish.

nothing like first hand puke... 2nd hand being another dogs of course... :vomit:

she was fine and never looked better! so a couple of days past use by meeh!

  18. i really want to go but would like to take sophie.... she has come along way but still has a long way to go....

i cannot get her to relax at times... she barks for no reason at things only she can see or hear... for hours...

not sure i can afford $145.00 for something i can see on telly.
