  1. What I don't understand about this discussion is why you wouldn't feed your dog meat.

I haven't seen anyone on here asked to justify their decision to feed their dogs meat, however plenty of people have asked why you wouldn't.

So, can the vegetarian feeding people tell me why they don't actually feed meat? Other than the usual I don't like it response, because this isn't about you, it's about your dog and what they would prefer.

Heres my view on this question being a vegetarian. It was difficult for my husband particularly to bring a meat eating animal into our lives. We considered feeding vegan dry food but decided that it was not in the best interest of the dog particularly when it is a growing pup.

For us its an environmental issue. the production of chickens, cows etc for meat is not as environmentally friendly as production of vegetable matter. A dogs meat eating diet is an extra burden even if it is their natural inclination. When you feel so strongly about being vegan or vegetarian particularly for the environment it can be difficult to get around the idea of owning a meat eating animal let alone buying it meat. I guess if people feel that strongly then they really should own a rabbit. If its an ethical/environmental issue for some people then i don't see why they cant feed byproducts like chicken necks, offal, chicken frames and chicken/bone mince.

I have a question though in regards to those who feed only dry food. If you can get a regular dry food and a vegan dry food and they are both fairly equal in protein, fat, fibre etc then is there really much difference between them. I agree that people trying to feed a dog vegetarian via mixing miscellaneous vegetables together is potentially hazardous.

  2. So pup had his 8 week shots on Thursday and i'll be getting him on Wednesday. What i'm wondering about is the 8-12 week age is supposed to be the human socialising age but pup isn't fully protected yet against parvo now is he?

How am i supposed to expose him to everyday life and people? Do i just carry him around? Or do i just avoid other dogs. I want to take him to the kids school but there is a resident dog, do i just hold him in my arms and not let him on the ground or wait till way after his second vax to take him? But then it'll be towards the end of the 12 weeks.

I want to do the right thing by introducing him to a lot of different people for socialisation especially kids but don't want to put him at risk either.

So would you take him to the school in arms 8 days after his first vax?

When would you allow him to walk around town on leash?

Do i just invite people around to meet pup instead of him meeting them?

    Just confused.

  3. But with brindling in Afghans a lot of blues and Donmino are coming out Domino-brindle or blue-brindle.

don't mind a blue brindle or domino brindle. Still have to wait atleast 3 months before looking for a dog due to finding an appropriate residence. I will have to wait a little while regardless i think.

  4. Lowenhart, do they not hipscore because the incidence of HD is low in the breed.

Does anyone know what the Average Hipscore is for an Afghan is?

I'd also like to know. thought i saw a website somewhere with that info.

Another Q. Do i have a hope in hell of getting a domino or blue pet afghan? :)

  5. Hi, just wondering what tests you'd expect should be performed on dogs that are to bred from. Is it unreasonable to expect the parents to have been hipscored. What hipscore would be good for an afghan. Thyroid problems, autoimmune disease, cancer. I'm guessing if the sire and dam have these problems, then they probably wont be bred from?

    Just preparing myself.
