  1. Hi, we are looking at getting a 4 month old Kelpie puppy. Just curious as to how much exercise should they get? Our last dog was a giant breed who you had to be careful about running/jumping etc under 12 months. Are kelpies the same or can they be a bit more vigorous? It's been awhile since I had a puppy!

    Cheers

Hi Baslebear, Depends on if its working or bench kelpie. I have 2 kelpies one 10months old and one 16months old. They both love to run, but like all breeds you still have to watch their growth. My girl has been doing herding since she was 6 months old, but in saying that it was very light training she was doing nothing that was going to be detrimental to her growth, They are both bench kelpies , but the girl has more drive than the boy. They both get an hr cross country run of a morning, sleep all day and if im home early enough in the arv get another walk, just a short one then some ball play. I am an active person anyway so they are perfect for me. As my vet always says, the most common complaint in a kelpie is , that they have fallen out of the back of a ute, they are pretty robust in their structure, but you still have to be careful in their early months.

  2. Seriously?

The owner made a very poor effort to locate their puppy and the dog was held for 10 days.

I fail to see anything that suggests Cr Andrew Antoniolli was happy for others to euth the puppy.

Most importantly, it's an old thread. Take the drama elsewhere, this one has 10 pages of it and that's more than enough.

With all due respect OzPit, but i never mentioned anything to do with the opening thread and this is the thread that Cr Antoniolli responds to. I was curious about an issue i pm him and never physically responded to the council issue, which is somewhat to do with this thread. It was more of an open question, sorry if it didnt agree with you.

  3. Now im a little confused with whats the norm with the council now. On the 21st of February i gave Cr Antoniolli a private email about the 2 unfenced dogs that live next to me, that roam whever they like. Neither dogs are socialised. These dogs have been brought to the attention of the officers and now the top man in the job, Where do i go from here "The Mayor", sorry its not a laughing matter. We all have to abide by the rules, i personally like my dogs in the yard so i know where they are, if its council rules for these dogs to be registered and fenced, why arent they.May i add that my 1st contact with the very 1st officer about this problem when there was 3 dogs roaming( one since gone for attacking livestock)was before my 2nd dog arrive. She will be 12months old in May. I think they have had enough time to work out whether or not to pay a 2nd visit.

  4. Oh how could you not let that pair play together, they look so cute, and Abby's big voice thats a kack. Megs wouldnt do anything anyway until she got to say hello and have a littl play....Megs too has come out of her shell a bit since going. She almost needed valium the first night she was so worked up

  5. Hey guys. Where do you all buy your show leads from. Ive got a nice one coming from the UK., but takes 6 weeks to get here, as it is hand made. Do you buy off certain online stores, or do you just buy them at the vans at Durack? Abby and megs were in trouble all night thursday night for being the naughty children:-).. We've just come from our herding display, she was so good not nervous at all in front of people so that was a good sign.

  6. I have 2 kelpies and they have 5 acres to play on, but will only use it if im out there with them. We worked in the yard all day saturday and they ran all day as well chasing butterflies, swimming in the dam and had a great day, but wouldnt do it unless i was out there. If we are inside, they are asleep on the lounge:-)... but in saying that, they would go crazy if they didnt have their daily walks and runs, as i take them every morning for a cross country run, and they love it, so what keeps them on track with happiness is the activities they do with me out of the yard

  7. I don't think a drizzle of flaxseed oil would go astray either. Mine spend a lot of time in dam water and use to have issues with hot spot and skin problems. since having cider vinegar and flaxseed oil, not one blemish.....but not one remedy works for all, its a working out whats works for you, mine also get a sprinkle of protexin powder in their evening meal, and sometimes VAN skin and coat supp. There diet consists of lean meaty bones, and kangaroo mince, beef mince, a bit of chicken mince, with fruit and veg mixed in. They dont like sardines or anything like that, especially the home brand ones. Won't even look at them......

  8. I live in a street where there are mostly 5 acre lots. Every yard i go passed has either one or more aggressive dogs in those yards. I wouldnt want one of them to get out. Some are left with gates open, and its hit and miss as you kreep passed the yards with your dogs. Not one of them is a pit or amstaff. One actually is the most aggressive lab i have ever seen. It is the wankers who own these dogs that make them like this not the breed. Not one of these dogs to my knowledge is walked and they never get a ball thrown for them. The only dogs my 2 will go to the fence and have a talk to are the beautiful greyhounds up the road(with the owners concent)

  9. I go to Tim Rush at Yamanto, LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Raceview is equally as good, my boys go there with their dogs. I go to Tim, as we have cattle and he has more livestock knowledge and working breed dogs, but not 24hr service. We went to the Blackstone rd a/hrs one night( it was 5.30 in the arv) and an xray was i think $460. They were very good, i have not much experience with the after hr charges in ippi, so not much help there.

  10. Did the daily walk this morning. Couple of K loop around to the off leash area then a fair bit (20 * 40m) of sprinting chasing a ball, then came home and did another bit next to the bike. Pulling a little bit this morning until we stopped a few times to work out who was going to be in charge:)

ummmmm who ended up in charge?

  11. where i take my two x country running has 2 huge full swimming holes at the moment. for the last 2 days we have actually got our morning runs in and they have just swam solid for about 20 minutes on top of their run. Jones just floats, cause he looks like a seal at the moment, and poor megs nearly drowns trying to stay out deep with him

  12. The 14th will be my first time in the ring  I am so nervous. With all this rain I haven't been able to do any training with Freddy.

If you are around group 3 I will be the one with the very naughty Golden and looking scared sh#*less :)

crazy daisy do you do training at durack on thursday nights? theres a young golden there thats all. Ill be popping out there tonight if the rain holds off. My girls scared enough without missing nights
