Just because a cross breed dog doesn't have the coat of a maltese or westie, doesn't mean there isn't maltese or westie in there. The other breed(s) could be responsible for the coat. Just look at the 'designer dogs' like cocker spaniels x poodles. Some have the poodle coat, some have the cocker coat, some have a coat which is neither here nor there.

Cross breeds are just that, they don't breed 'to type', so there will be wild variations in appearance between one JRT/malt and another especially if the parents weren't pure either.

The predominant breeds I *think* I can see in Byron are maltese and JRT, but really, does it matter?

at the time, yeah, i did think it mattered ... i'm a lil bit lost cuz his progress seems to have plateaued and i thought that if i had an idea of his 'makeup' it might give me some insight! it was a longshot :D

since mid-october [one week short of 4 months]

how do you interact with him

we are the same with him as we are with bella ... play time, pats [and smooches], basic training, exercise, discipline, rewards for good behaviour...

what specifically about his behaviour makes you think he is having trouble settling in? If you can describe his issues, perhaps we can give you some practical advice? For example, dogs that are very timid and unsure often benefit from being virtually ignored until they pick up the routine, gain some trust in you and approach you of their own accord. Showering uncertain dogs with cuddles and affection can confuse them, and even reward timid/frightened behaviour.

this is excellent information ... thank you again i wish i'd been given that advice in the beginning because he does seem very timid and quite unsure of himself ... i've seen those blank stares before in other dogs and there's the question that nobody can answer...

Not very good at picking breeds but in flyball we would put his breed down as "big brown dog" (we also have little black dogs- both are rare and honorable breeds to own LOL)

gillybob, bella [my adoptive ruler] is a jrt/malt too and apart from our colouring we don't really resemble each other ... and she's got wavy hair where mine lays flat! i guess tho that some of the same litter can be different, but my face is a whole lotta different! any pix you can share!??!

oh and btw, my humans have plenty room in their hearts for more lost and broken doggies, but my progress has been slow ... i wish i could tell em what my life was like before...

as for my nails, they're all pink but my skin is mottled! when i first arrived at my forever home my humans thot i mighta had some chinese crested in me but then later decided that i mighta had some long haired chi instead.

bertandsally *giggles* YUP but the devil part of me is still buried deep ... i need to talk to some experienced rescuers/fosterers cuz i'm still not sure about things and maybe they can help me understand that it's all okay now and i can finally be happy...

i grew up on a farm and there were always dogs, working dogs ... dogs ... and they worked their butts off and did a frikken good job of it!

here's the thing ... my dad bred his best worker with another farmer's best worker irrespective of breed and he and the other farmers in the neighbourhood got damn good working dogs...

my thing is, if ya wanna show, breed or just own a purbred, then go for it...

BUT growing up on the farm i have a healthy respect for cross breeds and mongrels ... if trained and treated properly, and you are the right person for that 'breed', then go for it ... each to their own...

personally, i'm an advocate for rescue ... i love purepred dogs but my love for them is equal to cross breeds and mongrels. dogs are dogs...

its up to you to make the most of your friend ... irrespective of its heritage

the offers of help in that thread are again being displayed here and that warms my heart ... leo's story is one that should remain the warning to everyone.
