  1. The breeder told me it could take up to 3 months for my papers to be given to me. My pup is on Main Register and is apparently co-ownership with the kennel. I want to show her and was hoping to get the papers sooner so I can register her in Tas. I'll try to get in contact with Dogs SA

What does Co-ownership mean? Did you know when you purchased??

ETA,What's the deal, some kind of contract as to what you can't do etc?

    Papers in ex-owners name & yourself ?

  2. The more you milk her, the more she will produce  What did your vet suggest? They can probably prescribe something for her. if it were me, I would be drastically reducing her food, and increasing her exercise ... but if she has problems associated with the garlic- exercise may not be possible.

Be guided by your vet after her tests.

Sorry to hear about the problem

Is it all under control now?

    Persies advice is correct.

    Did your vet advise you?

I have heard there is an injection???

Home wise about all you can do is wrap her or pad her down in hot wet towels to ease her pain and try prevent milk fever

.Keep the hot towels on her as long as you can.

Sh-t always happens at 2-3 weeks .....oh no never at 4-5 weeks when it would have been less stress feeding the babies.

What did you end up doing?

  3. Just a quick update on my I phone. Ive been in to see him, he is one sad and sick looking boy. When they said he could sit up they meant he can sit his head up, which is still great though a bit misleading. His breathing is very rattly but much better than last night. He managed to lift his head and give me kisses even if he did still have dried spew around his mouth, lol. Then he pawed at me with his iv bandaged paw and rest his paw and head on my hand. He'll still be in there for a couple of days at this stage :cheer: but atleast he is alive and will recover!

Here are your guardian Angels :laugh::rofl::) ;) :cheer:

    God heard our prayers

  4. my vet has always told me i should have my street shoes and my home shoes.

the street shoes dont go inside the house or yard as you can carry disease on the soles and infect your puppy.

That is a good practise to have in place.

With-out being too paranoid about this I've been told we can carry what-ever on our clothes too.....imagine Asal out the front of your home changing your clothes for all the neighbours to see in the freezing cold & rain :laugh: ....what is that mad woman doing now!?? he he.......Oh I'm just taking off my street clothes and putting on my house clothes.....they'd lock you up!!!

Wish there was less confusion re vaccs. though

  5. I have signed him up to 3 different puppy classes, to socialise him as much as possible, and only one puppy class is held indoors. The other two are outdoors in grassy areas, so would be pretty much impossible to disinfect. One of the outdoors ones is in a fenced in area around the club house, but I don't see what would stop anyone from going in there when there are no classes being held. Not sure if there is any kind of fence around the other outdoors one.

But then, I have another dog and I take her for walks every day (she is fully vaccinated of course) but if she sniffs some other dog's poo while we are out, then she could possibly carry the parvo virus back into the house and infect puppy... I haven't taken puppy out anywhere except puppy class, but he's hardly quarantined, because of my other dog that goes out... Even if I didn't have any other dog, there is still the possibility of me stepping in something while I am out and him then chewing my shoes and getting it that way. You just can't win can you...

His vaccination certificate says his booster is due on the 23rd, he will be 13 weeks on the 22nd, so I thought that was a bit strange too. I thought you're supposed to leave 4 weeks between the first and second vaccination, but in his case it's about 8 weeks between them....

Yes,I hear you & understand, all you can do is not take unnecessary risks.

Some-thing rather odd about your vet & vaccs.

This year I had fogotten one of mine to get her 2nd C4,because it was a 2 month lapse, not one month, I then had to have another one...C4,it is because the immunity is null & void after 4 weeks, then the final one C5 a month after this. I was quite surprised that I had to do this, that won't happen again, until this happened I assumed be it 1 month,6 weeks-2 months it wouldn't matter,so this means she has had 4 vaccs for the year.

I like them to be protected but I don't like over dosing them .

I'd be double checking re 8 weeks between vaccs, you need to know.

  6. Hi guys,

I'm after some suggestions. My cocker is terribly fussy when it comes to food. She won't go anywhere near vegies or fruit, hates kangaroo, doesn't like turkey necks and has started turning her nose up at chicken necks which is the one food I've always been able to get her to eat!!

So far I've tried all of the below with only short term success:

    Chicken frames

    Ground chicken frames

Butchers ground and cooked pet mince

    Boiled and raw beef mince

    Boiled and raw chicken mince

Any raw meat except a small bone

I know she'll eat boiled chicken thigh but I can't just give her that and nothing else!

Help!!!!! I've run out of idea's.

I know exactly what you mean.My lot put me through the wringer too,on occasions, turn their nose up at Rump steak or chicken!

Gees she sure sits you out .....9 days.

Must have a real stubborn attitude

Try cooking her some Liver & mix it with mince or canned ....... what-ever you think she likes best.

Have you tried Sardines alone or mix with what-ever.......tried boiled eggs?

They drive you around the bend when they carry on like this,some-times if one won't eat the others follow suit grrrrr

Mine get over it but they sure push all my buttons when this is going on.

Have you any Nurtigel or similar on hand ? is there some-thing others may know about to stimulate her appetite.

What about veges with the chicken & mince cooked up with rice & pasta?

    No teeth problems.....?

    A nice meaty fresh bone?

  7. Just curious how many breeders are using the BARF diet for their bitches and puppies. If so have you found it to be worthwhile? Have you had better success with BARF litters than litters which were raised on commercial food?

I started mine on it full time after reading all about it on this Forum.I had no idea what BARF meant until then.I give raw mince, roo, chicken etc.at 5-6 weeks, start out at 3-4 weeks on Pedigree puppy,as soon as they get the taste of raw they won't touch the canned.Have I noticed the difference in litters, apart from a very shiney coat.... I haven't, but to see them enjoy it so much it has been all worth the extra time it some-times takes to prepare.None of mine like the prepared BARF.It's rewarding to know (barf) it is so beneficial to them & they are all so contented.

This has continued with the last few new owners as well,so we are all getting on the band waggon  Education

is the key,I tell every-one I can & try and convince them, those that care really look into it & change.

The bones also give them some-thing to do as well as enjoy.

  8. Just wondering if my puppy is protected after just one vaccine? He had his first at about 5 weeks old, and is due for his booster on Oct 23rd.

I assumed he wouldn't be fully protected until he'd had the booster, but in puppy class they don't seem worried about this at all, seeing as they are all outdoors and in areas where other (unvaccinated) dogs could possibly have access.

I would think this very risky,I wouldn't do it,hell what other stray dogs walk etc on this ground when school is not held?????? & what they may be carrying & leave to infect your puppy, you could pick parvo up on your shoes, omg it only takes one dog to infect yours.I've been advised by my vet that "they" are not fully protected immediately either,I'd wait a week later.....heh what's a couple of weeks to be safe & sure.Others have advised re vaccs.

  9. Hi everyone,

This is a bit of a rant, but of a different kind.

How many threads do you find in this section, ranting and whinging about:

    - People wanted to buy DD dogs or dogs from petshops.

    - People wanting to breed their own dogs, because they want a similar pup, or because their friends and family want a a dog just like that.

    - People having poor control over their dogs.

    - People having poor control over their children when approaching dogs.

I'd just like to say, you all live in a 'dog bubble'. You know all the above is wrong, but other people genuinely have no idea. They honestly do not know better.

It isn't a case of them being evil, or thinking they are professionals of some sort, rather, a case of lacking knowledge.

Rather than having a sook and complaining every 5 seconds, perhaps spend 5 mins educating someone who isn't that dog savvy, it would go a long way.

I know my opinion is never popular, but I am just making an observation.

    Thanks,

    DR.

How about pointless rants like yours? ;)

    :D :rofl::rofl:

  10. No, thats the other strange thing - no papers have shown up yet. How long does it take to get them?

The breeder released her early because she had another litter due on the following Monday, so we got her on the Friday - only 2 days shy of 8 weeks.Gypsy met my mother-in-laws 2 dogs today and they all got along so well. Have to say that she has been socialised very well by the breeder. She is super friendly to all dogs and doesn't shy away from anyone. She goes to all the people she has met so far, and just loves the attention. I'm so glad she is a happy little girl with no fears or hang ups

That is absolutely no excuse........pathetic,on behalf of that breeder.

Like i said a REGISTED breeder arnt allowed to let there pups go before 8 weeks of age...

My guys were 1 day shy of 8 weeks i had ppl wanting to take them.. Simple answer NO They are not 8 weeks of age...

If she got all your details papers should take couple weeks

I could be wrong but I seem to remember that age for pups leaving for their new homes could be slightly different in each state CC. We were looking at our National Code of ethics and one state had put up that pups couldn't leave breeders until 7 weeks where other states said it was 8 weeks. Like I said I could be wrong, it was a while ago and I only just remember there was an issue with the different CC being slightly different

    Cheers Lee

QLD CCC code of ethics.....not one not 2 days before 8 weeks.Exporting 11 weeks.

U.K.pups do not leave home before 12 weeks same should apply here imho.

ETA,pathetic excuse on behalf of this breeder imho

  11. Good topic. I've just been through exactly the same thing, although I have long suspected that the suspension is crap.

I wormed my babies at 2 weeks with suspension ( I'd thought twice about buying it, as I just worm them with a tablet at 2 weeks ), next worming at four weeks I gave them a tablet and the worm burden left me stunned and feeling like a dirty breeder, who'd failed my pups.

I haven't recieved a response from Bayer, other than the automated reply that comes with an email and that was 4 or 5 weeks ago. That reminds me to follow it up.

ETA: when I wormed my babies at 2 weeks, I knew exactly what they weighed, calculated the dose and added a little extra to account for any that failed to make it to the stomach.

Yes,I weigh them always,Drontal is over the top with price so have switched to Troy.....Troy has fingers in a few pies...ha ha ha !

What does ETA stand for...see it often?

  12. Lots of breeders haven't heard of coccidia.

It is easily cured (as you have found) but a lot of dogs and pups die because their owners, and sometimes the vets, have no idea what coccidia is. They think it is parvo, and treat accordingly - sometimes the pup lives, sometimes not. There is a specific treatment (Baycox)

I don't have it in my kennels, as far as a I know, but if I had ever had it, I would give any pups I sold a precautionary dose of Baycox (which cures it). I do think that coccidia shows symptoms in pups which are stressed - never seen any research which agrees with this but that is how it seems to me.

And maybe that would explain how dogs which the breeder said were healthy had diarrohea (sp?) on arrival by air. Air travel is very stressful for pups.

Luckily, it isn't difficult to cure if diagnosed correctly early enough.

It is contagious too, most susectable up to 12 weeks of age.I always give my puppies a dose of Baycox for their own protection when leaving home at 12 weeks of age,as Jed has said it seems to come out with stress, this puppy would have been under stress, leaving home, flying, new owners & surroundings all in one day and only 8 weeks old, just not fair :p  .......that's a whole new thread!

Glad it was a happy ending.

  13. Once again friggin iresponsible owners.Had no idea Huskies were like this, hope the fence never falls down next to me where 2 reside.

I wonder if someone perhaps from some rescue could give this poor soul a small white dog that is older? Not now but soon....time to grieve atm for Hamish. :p

IMO (as the owner of a Husky) this sort of attack wouldn't have happened if the owners of the dogs were responsible owners who knew what sort of care a Husky requires. While our Husky is prey driven and will catch birds if you let her, if the fence fell down on our side and she was able to get into my neighbour's yard (who has a Maltese) she would NEVER hurt Casey at all. Yes, Huskies are prey driven, but no, not all Huskies are like this. In fact, I would say that the owner is probably the sort of person who tells his dogs to "git 'em!" every time they're faced with another dog, and if that's the case, who can blame them for turning out like this.

Yes,ferel owners ferel dogs, same goes with the human race.

  14. I had an interesting and funny conversation with a bloke the other day. He's got a working border collie in Qld (that he rescued from the Coldstream animal aid  ) and he said they put a tracking system on it one day while it was working. At the end of the day it had done 82 kms. The next day they put it on the house dog and at the end of the day it had done 100 mts :)

OMG that is a lot of kilometres, very surprising too he certainly earns his keep,I want to send one of mine to him, perhaps I should also go,just for a few months.

  15. A 16-year-old labrador survived eight weeks with no food trapped in an abandoned tunnel house in the Southland town of Riverton.

Gail was able to survive by using her own body fat and getting water from a hole in the roof, the Southland Times reported.

The family pet was found by a neighbour in an unused tunnel house - or plastic greenhouse - across the road from the owner's property.

Riverton man Lou Peterson said there were tears of joy when Gail walked up their driveway on Tuesday.

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article....jectid=10680471

Haha, good thing Gail is a Lab. She must be as big an eater as all the rest.

Poor Gail, wonder it had the strength to walk, tears of joy and other because of her condition.Gail must have had a huge will to live. For once thank goodness for a neighbour, would have thought owners would have searched such areas......u know no stone unturned if that were me..........bet she is still eating

  16. No from me for all the above reasons.

If this person finds your decision unreasonable and can't comply with your choices, then thats one puppy buyer you probably don't want to be dealing with long term anyway.

Liz, keep reminding yourself these are YOUR puppies, and no amount of pressure from buyers should influence your feelings and decisions. Its a scary road to go down, because you will regret the choices you made under pressure.

    fifi

No not ever, ridiculous idea, for all the above reasons stated,I did it once but didn't know until they arrived.

I had one 2 weeks ago, thought after 1-1/2 hours they'd never leave, paid a deposit and then emailed me & phoned 6 times in the one day to say they would like to come every day.So the pups are not ready for another 4 weeks= 12 weeks,I said this is not normal nor is it acceptable, not only for all the reasons stated but to find that much time every day for a stranger,I have found that you have to set the terms & boundaries or there are those like this one that will certainly try to take over your life.If they are offended so be it,I would gladly have returned the dep.I was not for all the right reasons have copped this.Mine never leave before 12 weeks, they need to be longer with their Mums & litter mates, buyers have them for the rest of their lives....we can only wish & hope!

  17. no news on the pregnant female

I have just rang the Zoo,because nothing mentioned on the news.I spoke to some-one who said the little male one was killed(autopsy done)& tossed in to the yard he was found in.This lady said that he would have put up a good fight, probably poor little beggars down-fall.I asked about security & was told there are double locks & double yards & that these "theives" came well prepared. The news & police are over there looking as I speak as there was a sighting either early today or last night of the little female one in the area close to the Zoo,apparently it is in a new estate,so if any-one else wants to help find her, should they live near by the Zoo, No is 3204.6566,I wish it would stop raining to help efforts to find her.

Good on you bridie. I hope they find her safe and sound. What is it with people who would do this? Have they no clues about extinction and the reason there is a breeding program? It's so tragic about the little male. I found it hard to sleep the other night just thinking about it. :(

This has the media coverage it deserves at last.

Whoever tried to thieve them would have bite marks,he really sunk his teeth in & scratches,so there are others who know who this is........people like this are not worth protecting, just mongrels.

  18. Good for you for following this up Kristy...

Some serious butt kicking needs to be done and without your letters, the 'bosses' would never have known and actions like this would have continued.

Be assured that you did everything you could for this sweet dog but you have now helped alot more future stray dogs in the area.

    Thanks

I was wondering if perhaps I was wasting my time, and then thought, even if I am, I've tried. I will let everyone know when I get a response.

I look at all the wonderful rescues the dolers do on here and it restores my faith that there are people that care.

P.S. Thanks Cody - even though I didn't know for this time, useful to know for future, even for my furkids. I didn't realise there were any nearby vets open till that late!

    Heh Kirsty,

Have just read this thread, mate welcome to Australia so there are some good Poms over here. You did more than most would have done, you were let down by those that should have helped you and this poor dog, responses were pathetic....be it excuses, true or lies.

Have you seen this dog since? not that you'd want to go though all this again.

    Thanks for caring.

  19. no news on the pregnant female

  20. Please get your vet to check his teeth as infection from untreated teeth can cause heart disease and other ramifications for his health.

It's a sore subject with me - I rescued a purebred dog last year and 2 days later he died - aged 5, from untreated dental infection. Apart from the fact that he was in agony, when my vet tried to remove his teeth (and all of them needed to come out), his jaw crumbled so he was euthanased under anaesthetic. By the time I got him, the infection had run rampant and pus was coming out of his eyes and his ears/whole head were in pain.

This is an extreme but I recently looked at a friend's dog aged about 12, he was having trouble eating and he stank - smell was coming from his mouth.

When I asked about it, she said the vet had recommended a dental but she was too afraid to put the dog under anaesthetic. Apparently the vet had recommended it 2 yrs before. I told her my story and begged her to go back as they have light anaesthetics these days so suitable for older dogs.

She took him back and he had 22 teeth out, he's a different dog now - he's so much happier.

Ever had toothache yourself - off you go to the dentist and get it fixed. Now imagine having it in 22 teeth and having your pain ignored for 2 years?

One tooth can be bad and cause all the trouble. I have a 16 yr old dog here, he's had 2 dentals within 4 months and each time has needed teeth out - the state of his teeth changed within 4 months requiring the second surgery, none of us could believe it.

Omg  how many do they have?
