  1. Hi everyone, We have found a breeder that we like. She has two pups from different litters. One is 10 weeks old, the other is 5 months old. Is there a better age for adoption as far as socialisation, settling in etc. I have read up on puppy developement and was wondering about the socialization side. I know the older pup hasn't been around too many strangers etc. We have four children and want a good solid social dog.
  2. Thank you eveyone. I have had a good think about it over night and realise not to jump in too quickly. One puppy for this house.....at least for now!!
  3. We have found a breeder that has some wonderful puppies. We are having trouble picking between two boys. My husband suggested maybe we get both. What are the thoughts about this? Are two boys okay or would just one be better? There are only two boys left so there isn't an option of boy/girl, unless we got an older dog. There are two other puppies that are 5 months old, both girls, while the two boys are 10 weeks old.

    Bullmastiff

We are considering a bullmastiff that is about two years old, from a breeder. We have children and cats. Do you think that an animal of that age would deal well with rehoming? We adopted a golden retriever ( who has how passed) at three years old and she fit right in within a couple of days, but wasn't sure if the Mastiff's would change families as easily.
  6. I really get what you are saying. I am sorely tempted to go down the lines of a boxer or weimarana but then wonder what will happen to those lovely pups?
  7. I completely agree with you about the breeding. Very irresposible from both families!! Some people just don't get it though. These people look like they have trouble feeding themselves never mind a house full of dogs. I by no means agree with what they have done!
  8. We will go and see the father of the pups tomorrow. He belongs to friends of our and apparently is short coated. The family who has him is lovely and has said he is a great member of their family. I will also talk to our vet regarding worming shots etc. and the time lines that will be followed. Thanks for the help everyone!
  9. Thanks again everyone. Every day I do check the rescue section. I have been looking on pet rescue and have visitted a few animal shelters. I would dearly love a weimarana or a boxer, although my girls aren't fussed. We have also been looking at young adults as we aren't set on just a puppy. I will take all advice on board and no decision will be made without alot of thought. At the end of the day we are looking for a canine companion to join our family. Any other comments would be greatly appreciated.
  10. Thank you for all the good points. The family are asking NO money for the pups. They aren't BYB, they are just uneducated dog lovers. I know this is the second litter for them. I think that because they aren't asking for money, they think it is just something nice to do. I do understand all about BYB and resposible pet ownership. We also have cats. I don't encourage it at all but the pups are already here. I am not set on these pups at all but thought it deserved consideration. If we find a rescue dog, we would be in the same situation as far as info about parents etc. I have sent an email to a couple of breeders about rescue animals but have not heard anything back.
  11. No they are in the house with the family which has two kids and the mother dog, and another male dog who is desexed. As I said, I just thought this is a good place to get advice.
  12. I am assuming at this point, because of the condition of the house that the pups have not received shots or worming. I know this family vaguely and although lovely people, probably don't go down that line. She has stated that they won't go to homes until Feb 6th which is 8 weeks. We have had a retriever in the past and we haven't made the decision to look for another dog lightly. We have been looking and on this forum for awhile now so that we didn't make a rash decision on "cute" etc. We have visitted a few shelters, applied for a dog with vic dog rescue, which was not successful and have looked on here too. I suppose I want to know that if they haven't had all this done before they went home, what the consequences could or would be?
  13. We are looking to adopt a family member. We have four girls aged 8-14. My husband is a runner and would love to take the dog, once old enough with him. I am a stay at home mum, so am home most of the time. We had a goldie until about a year ago that died at 13. I would prefer shorter hair this time round but it isn't a necessity. Just a lovely temperment and good family member is all we are after. We have been looking at rescue dogs, but a friend told us about this litter, so we went to look. Also thought that if we got a dog with our neighbour that they could have each other for company as well, but that isn't a priority. The family isn't after money for the pups, but I have checked with our vet and know the cost of desexing, microchipping and shots already. I suppose I wouldn't know about health issues. Should I have put this under the Puppy forum instead?
  14. Hi everyone, we have gone to see a neighbour who has puppies. The mother is probably a lab cross pointer. The father lives across the road and is a golden retriever cross lab. I haven't met the father of the pups, but the mother seemed to have a lovely nature. There are a mix of nine puppies who are now 5 weeks old. I know there is alot of debate about mixed breeds etc. We would welcome any advice about possible adoption. Our good friends across the street are also looking for a dog. We thought that perhaps getting litter mates, they could socialize alot without always living together as both of us would prefer to adopt only one dog. Is there any way at this age to tell whether they will have a long or short coat? Thanks in advance.
