    Hi everyone

I contacted the Tasmanian breeder and she confirmed that she new Kasper’s breeder very well and they used each other’s boys.  She is going to let me know when any of her girls  have mated and send me photos.  Thanks everyone for all your advice, it is really appreciated.

That's fantastic news!  I'm not surprised she was very familiar with Kendarlyn shelties.... there were so many back in her dogs' pedigrees.  Looks like you'll have the relative you so much wished for!

  2. Maybe contact that Tasmanian breeder on the link given.  Looks like she's got quite a few Kendarlyn shelties back in her Shelmanna pedigrees.  Experienced breeders like her can be a fund of information about the various bloodlines.  And could give you tips of where to look & who to ask about your Kasper.   I know that myself from the experienced tibetan spaniel breeders how informative they can be.

I googled & got the above information.  That link led to a Sheltie data-base where you have to register to look up details.
  4. I still haven't found which rescues those dogs went to.  RSPCA & local Council moved on the PF because accommodation was not suitable for welfare of 57? dogs.  PF elected to reduce the number by surrendering them to rescue groups.  RSPCA directed that a few remaining be desexed.  RSPCA didn't have a list of those rescue groups, nor did the local Council (Loden).     I did find that Animal Aid had taken dogs from an illegal Cavoodle PF that was required to close.  But that was another Council area... Wellington (?).   So please keep ears to the ground if you hear of any Vic rescue group (s) that have taken PF dogs.

  5. Puppy farm at Dunolly Vic (near Bendigo?) was directed to close by RSPCA & Council because accommodation (& sales methods) not in compliance with current law.  Bendigo newspaper reported that the owner  surrendered most of the dogs to independent rescue groups.  A photo of a Tibetan Spaniel accompanied the article so we're trying to track which rescue groups took dogs in and which one/ones have Tibbies.  Does anyone associated with Rescue in Victoria have on-the ground info about these rescue groups, so we can check for any Tibbies?   Thanks.

  7. There's also just been a puppy farm shut down from business at Dunolly (near Bendigo).  The Council & RSPCA Vic directed them to do so because they did not have adequate accommodation for 57 dogs.... local newspaper article says that's due to new laws which came into place in April. This person in complying with the directions,  elected to surrender the dogs to rescue groups.  I'm trying to find out which rescue groups/organisations in Victoria took in these dogs.  The photo accompanying the article is a Tibetan Spaniel & we want to find what rescues took in Tibbies.    Anybody know or have suggestions where to start looking?

It does seem counterintuitive to exercise a painful dog but that is where a good diagnosis and pain management plan comes into the picture. I will often put dogs on a few different pain meds to allow them to feel comfortable and build muscle. Once they have built some strength we can then reduce their pain meds because they are less painful.

Thanks for that, Jumabaar.  I've noticed just recently in the news,  medical research was presented showing that humans with dodgy knees may actually avoid knee replacements in numbers of cases....by doing precisely what you said can apply for dogs.  A specialist, individualised exercise program was worked out & the results were startling.  The program had a name (can't remember!) and it said physiotherapists and exercise physiologists can be trained in it.

You're right about counterintuitive!  Also recently, medical research was showing how tailored exercise can have enormous benefits to patients going thro' often harsh cancer treatments... just when we would've thought only rest would be needed.  The program said the evidence was so strong for the benefits,  that prescribing an exercise regime be undertaken should be part of an oncologist's role.

When it comes to arthritis at least the 3 proven treatments are

    Weight management

    NSAIDs (anti inflammatory)

    Exercise therapy

It is only when you look at all 3 (and then adding in other meds and supplements) that you will get the best results.

That makes sense to focus on core essentials.

What's the best kind of exercise therapy?  I'm noticing that people can tend to do the opposite....as soon as there's any limping or other signs of discomfort, they may stop walking the dog because they fear it's causing pain. Is swimming good?

  10. Minxy, the good thing is that you and your sister are doing your research and also figuring out what would fit with the environment & lifestyle.  Rescue people would wish that everyone thinking of getting a dog would do exactly that!   Your sister & family, when they get the right dog for them, will be more likely to get one that settles well. Best wishes for their ongoing search.

  11. Good things said about Tibetan Spaniels.  Only thing I'd ask be re-considered.   Being left out in the yard when family is out.   Our own Tibbies always have access via a doggie door to go in and out of house (into a weather-proof, secure verandah room)  to a secure garden area at back of house.  Family next door also own a Tibbie & when they're out, they pop him into that arrangement with our Tibbie.  They're a very tribal breed & thrive on companionship, because that's what they were bred to be in the monasteries of Tibet...& also to alert for danger.  So a Tibbie breeder might stress companionship, too.

Don't know if appropriate on this forum, but Tibetan Spaniel Rescue Australia  is soon going to do assisted rehoming for a pair of beautifully raised, well cared for adult Tibbie X Cavs (desexed male & female) for owners with legitimate reasons.  A well socialised, good natured,  much loved bonded pair.   Looking for similar quality new home.   Watch the Tibetan Spaniel Rescue Australia Facebook page... or PM me.  If inappropriate to mention them here....I'll delete.
