  1. What are the health issues the Pug suffers from?

From what we can gather currently he has sight and hearing impairment, teeth and bladder problems , mmm knowing this and knowing the family in US probably cannot afford to use a vet makes me feel if the latter suggestion posted originally would be kinder?

  2. My daughters fiance here in Aust has received a message that his Mum who has been in hospital needs to stay with an Aunt but sadly his 11 year old Pug who has health problems is not welcome !Unfortunately this is needing to happen in the next 2-3 weeks. IN the New Orleans/ Mandeville area USA.

I thought perhaps if I could find a forum as friendly as this, someone may be able to help it has sadly been suggested that poor little Pug be euthanased would that be kinder :)

  3. Like thryoid testing you can get a clear test one year and then a year later detect a problem. That is why most cardiologists who do clinics make people sign a bit of paper saying they won't use the result in advertising. So you do need to test at least once, and thereafter on the advice of the cardiologist.

If you were planning to breed, I would also test both dogs before the mating along with the other health tests, particularly with a Cav.

No I am not planning to breed, thank you all for your input

  4. What about a Lhasa Apso

I've got a couple of friends who have these, they're not as aggressive as maltese can be. They will bark a lot if left alone in the backyard with a sleepy lizard just through the fence. Not a good idea.

I don't know if they're big shedders or not, but they don't shed like a jack russell can.

Small dog syndrome is usually caused by humans thinking bad behaviour is cute in SWF puppies and they inadvertantly reward and encourage it. Wouldn't matter what dog you got, it's up to you to set limits and encourage good behaviour.

My daughter has a lhasa apso Charley, he is absolutely gorgeous with a wonderful disposition she also has a maltese as I have had and I would have to say Charley the lhaso apso gets the heads up from me

  5. My 13 week old pup has what looks like a big pimple on her girl bits. She is otherwise totally fine but I am not sure whether I should make a trip to the vet or not.

I am sorry I cannot help so I hope someone will come along to help you otherwise post in general thread

  6. contact the SA Cavalier Club and they will most likely advise the best place for heart and eye tests.

Hearts are done by a cardiologist and and the same with eyes (by an eye specialist)

NSW & ACT clubs run heath clinics where the tests are done at a discount price, I am sure that the SA Club does the same.

Heart testing is having someone listen very closely to the heart (by stethoscope) to see if they can hear any abnormalities, if they hear anything then the next step is an ultrasound or xray and then .....

Thank you very much can a vet do the heart test then ?

  7. Hi everyone, I would just like to get some dog/puppy owners views & opinions so that I can make a descision.

I bred my first litter of 8 puppies last year, & it will be their first Birthday in a couple of months time.

I kept one of the boys from the litter & found fantastic homes for the other 7. I am in regular contact with 4 of my puppy people via facebook , email & have even had a home visit from one of my owners & puppy. :rainbowbridge:

Unfortunately the other 3 puppy people have not kept in contact with me other than the first week of taking their puppy home, its a little dissapointing but I don't want to be pushy either, so I only hope that they love their pup & that the puppy is having a great life.

I would like to start putting together a birthday present parcel to send to each of my puppies. I know the 4 owners that keep in contact with me will be delighted to receive the parcel, but I'm not too sure if I should send one to the other 3 pups, as I don't want to look pushy, especially because the owner hasn't kept in contact with me.

I know the 3 pups don't care about being left out, as they are dogs & don't care about birthdays. :rainbowbridge:

But I personally would care & feel bad about leaving 3 of my pups out as I still love each & every one of them.

So I'm not to sure what to do, Would you feel uncomfortable receiving a Birthday present parcel from your dogs breeder if you haven't kept in contact with them?

    Thanks everyone :rainbowbridge:

    Nicole

What an absolutely gorgeous and caring idea I would be over the moon with that even a lovely card

  8. I am incredibly mad at my vet for the way he handled my almost 11 month old GR yesterday. Oscar had just been in for desexing and as we were picking him up I asked for some worming tablets while we were there. Vet didn't know how much Oscar weighed (even though I thought he would have needed to know for the procedure) so he dragged oscar by the lead over to the scales (and I mean dragged!) and used the lead to lift his front half of his body up onto the scales by his neck. Oscar was still recovering from the anaesthetic and he face planted onto the scales. The vet then lifted up his back by the skin at the top of his tail and plonked him down. My poor boy was being treated like a ragdoll and I was too timid to stop it :rainbowbridge:.

If the vet had just let me handle him I would have been able to get him to walk over to the scales on his own and stand on them. He didn't even give me a chance! It was complete lack of patience and a complete lack of respect for my dog. I just keep thinking how rough he would have handled him when we weren't there watching! I can understand vets needing to be firm with their handling, but to me this was beyond that. It's hard to describe exactly how it was, but it was enough for me to burst into tears once I was back in the car!

I should add too that this is a vet that my family has been using since I was a kid. He has always been good to us, but it seems that he just doesn't seem to care anymore. When Maggie (RIP) got sick we went to another vet clinic that had better diagnostic resources and I was so happy with how they handled her. They treated her with respect and she cooperated because of that.

So what is the norm for the way that vets handle animals? Has anyone else had an upsetting experience? Or am I overreacting?

If I seriously felt it was rough mis handling I would have told him then and there

  9. I went to Orange yesterday and had 2 of my dogs a Lab called Tua and our Border Collie X called Croftie both accredited as Delta Society Pets for Therapy Dogs. We get our special scarfs and a Polo Shirt for me next week. We hope to be able to visit nursing homes & hospitals soon.

I work in a nursing home what a fantastic idea and good on you to be giving of your time as well as Tua and Croftie

  10. Thanks for the responses guys. I certainly wasn't going to have my dog sedated and x-rayed before getting a second even third opinion.

We don't walk Baxter for very long-10 minutes at max and it's usually every second night with this weather. He's not jumping much yet but he loves running around with our elderly dog.

The stairs can be managed with a barrier. I prefer he stays downstairs because it's our cats territory and she doesn't like dogs very much

I am so glad this has turned out well for you

  11. I have had three dogs from puppies, but with my current puppy I tried crate training which I didn't do with the others.

It was amazing, one week to virtually accident free! Not a single poo inside.

Also very handy for keeping your dog close by when they are resting or having a quiet chew on a toy, without sticking them out of sight in the laundry, or even just having peace of mind that they aren't eating your pot plants when you are not looking. When we stayed in a B&B last week, Sniper slept in it, and I don't think we could have taken him there without it.

Mine has castors on it so I can roll it from room to room if I need to, and as its an airline crate with sort of two plastic halves with mesh windows, it's a bit darker inside for rest time. I  them!

    [/quote ]

I like the idea of the castors less back strain
