I lost my dog Matey April 2010 to Cancer and swore never another! but then I was" Lochies" official baby sitter while his dad was at work or away and sadly he had to be put to sleep 2nd Jan due to liver cancer and complications, so much cancer .

However my mind is starting to sway on the "No more dogs" and Lochie was a King Charles Cavalier only 7 so I am thinking seriously although somewhat scared of having to go through this cancer thing again

.I am searching for registered breeders who have online sites in SA I found a beautiful one today but would like a few options if anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. I am not ready at the moment for a pup because I want to take my time over this and their is a large possibility Lochies Dad will also be looking for a pup in a few months

sorry to hear this. Lochie could go downhill very quickly with liver cancer, I'm sure your friend will do the right thing though. I had to pts my little foxy this time last year because of liver cancer, the vet said she only had about 1-2 weeks but I wouldnt let her suffer as she was in pain.

Lochie has been thoroughly checked by the vet for pain more than once and at this time is showing no symptoms of pain at all if this was the case the decision would have been made. I am sorry for your loss under these circumstances, having been there myself with my own dog last April it just shattered me to the extent I would not get myself another dog and so to have this happen to Lochie has absolutely shell shocked me I cannot stop crying.

well if he isnt in pain that's great news. I only had 2 days from diagnosis to pts so I'm probably coming from the extreme.

sorry to hear about your dog but dont rule out getting another ok? my little girl was my heart dog (actually heart and soul) and my whole life. I was devestated but so lonely. I rescued a little jrt x and at first I didnt think I would bond with her

Have started the protocel 4 x times daily, he has started eating again thankgod and drinking well at least we are satisfied he is comfortable

My most sincere sympathy to you I went through it myself last April and am probably about to go through it again

This is so sad & my heart goes out to you & your friend. Reading your post it sounds like the little dog is in the last stages of the liver cancer & if that is the case is probably in a fair bit of distress. If it were my dog, I would do the kindest thing & have it PTS...I wouldn't be trying to draw out it's life by experimenting with different cures, just in case one worked enough to give it a few more months. It's quality of life has gone, very sad, but please do the right thing by the dog.

Sheena the strange thing with Lochie is he is not distressed as my own dog was when I had him PTS He sleeps between going out for wees and a drink I assure all we will absolutely do the right thing by Lochie. Thankyou for your reply

Im sorry but if one of my dogs had this problem I think I would have them PTS. The poor dog doesn't need to suffer any longer. That's the only advice I can give.

I am very sorry to hear this.

A few tips about a cancer diet: dogs with cancer usually have a problem with their fat digestion (which is why the can get so skinny). Adding good quality omega3 oil (flaxseed, fishoil, olive oil, canola oil) is very important. Have you heard about the Budwig diet? Essentially you mix flaxseed oil with cottage cheese and feed that. It's a very good way to feed the omega 3 oil. =) Apart from that the dog shouldn't have carbohydrates or starchy foods. Only meat and a few veggies like lettuce, brokkoli, carrots or fruits (not too much fruits as they contain a lot of sugar) plus 2 serves of liver per week.

I would also supplement antioxidants, selenium, vitamin E, enzymes and cordyceps. You wrote that this treatment you want to use doesn't allow herbal remedies, otherwise I would have suggested Essiac tea as well.

To get your dog to drink more you could make some chicken broth and put some in with his drinking water. Most dogs love it and will drink it happily.

And I personally would try classical homoeopathy. My own dog has been diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his face 2 years ago and has been treated with homoeopathy. The tumor has hardly grown since then and hasn't formed any metastases. She is nearly 15 years now. =)

Thankyou Anissa, Yes the cottage cheese and flaxseed is reccommended, have always been careful of fats due to Diabetes will make some chicken broth.

Will also read the Budwig diet ahh the " Budwig Diet" is in the book we have.

I have just given the 3rd dose of Protocell, he has regained a better walking and standing stance, has drunk a lot more water and still gets up to go outside to wee or to sit with me. No food, just sniffed the pumpkin ??

I was here some months ago when my beloved dog Matey had a tumour on his paw,Mast Cell cancer. Here I am again with the dog I have looked after for a friend daily Lochie a King Charles Spaniel 7 1/2 years also a diabetic. Diagnosed after a ultra sound and yesterday the sad news Liver Cancer. My friend cannot afford the few thousand to have this treated and has gone holistic he is trying a product he bought for himself when he thought he had Prostate cancer. Protocel sold in Australia as Entelev.

Wondering if anyone has used this product.

Advised to not feed red meat Lochie will now not eat his vege which he always has the only tiny bit of food he will tempt is some sliced ham or beef against what is supposed to be fed. He has been having Milk Thistle but the authors of this Protocel suggest no other herbal treatments ?

Also he was drinking a herbal tea and is lapping little water. He has been on a fluid drip at the vets this week I feel we will have to squirt fluid into him.

Am going to cook some pumpkin and see if he will lap this.

Any other ideas or advice will be greatfully received. He is unsteady I notice now on his legs but the little darling still gets up to go out for a wee and so I will carry him out.

Six months gone by now and still I cry. Specially reading my old posts.

Firstly I must apologise for not coming back sooner to post. Oh it was not for want of trying I just couldn't get through my tears and even now I find I am still the same which has taken me by surprise.

I had Matey put peacefully to sleep not long after my last post here at the time on the 10th April. He is lovingly still with me in spirit in his special place in my garden.

My vet at the time was wonderful and I stayed with him throughout, I can still see myself nodding at the vet to give that final overdose to make him pain free and at peace I can never go through that again.

Sadly even though Matey still appears OK within himself the tumour is growing rapidly infact I was shocked at how much it has grown in the last couple of days and is basically over growing his paw it is opening up in parts and looking raw. As I sit here in tears I feel I have to give quick consideration to the fact this must be mighty uncomfortable although when it is bandaged he doesn't show it. I think putting my feelings aside I should not allow him to go on until I feel he is ready.

I guess I was hoping for a miracle, that all I am trying would shrink this horrendous tumour but I have to admit defeat.

I have taken a photo I actually wish now I had taken photos from the beginning as these may have been able to help someone else identify this sooner.

Some great hints there, today I got all down in sausage, trick him first then cut a hole put in tab and down the hatch followed by another piece. I broke very tiny I also wonder now if it is because he only has 2 teeth and can feel the tabs. I do feel down the hatch is probably the way to go, love the cream cheese idea though yummy.

I have posted a different topic under general for trying to get mateys antibiotic down I am just not having any luck

Am wondering if some more suggestions for getting meds down could be offered here. I normally do not have a problem but since trying to get antibiotics down my usual way with cheese slices Matey has decided no way. I have been posting in the palliative care forum as he has Mast cell carcinoma, The tumour is very large now on his hind paw the antibiotics are for trying to keep this from becoming infected. It seems everything he detects this in he will not have a bar of, I am throwing it all out when I have been trying on and off all day. I have rolled it up in raw fish which he loves,added vegemite to my cheese slice including crushing the med to no avail. Tonight I have lifted sausages out maybe I can snook it in there.I might even try covering in butter somehting he liked when he was younger.

Any ideas greatly appreciated

Maggie had her first chemo last Thursday. I didn't know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to pick her up afterward and she was full of beans. She was a bit flat the next day, but overall is doing very well. Certainly has no loss of appetite

Hubby is getting used to going to the fridge and knowing that all the good stuff he sees, yogurt, cottage cheese, fresh cooked chicken, steamed carrot and broccoli - is not for him. I hear him grumbling but know he is smiling while he does.... : D Methinks I might come and raid your fridge too LOL

I still dont really know what to expect from here on in - Are the first days the ones she is most likely to feel unwell, or could that increase over the next week ? if ithe chemo works, how long before we should see a difference?

Also, does anyone know if subsequent chemos affect the differently? I thought they might as surely they start each one somewhat depleted from the last round of chemo ?

Yes you do have rights as do your animals make sure you use them, some great advice in previous posts here agree wholeheartedly.

PS I cannot imagine why you thought you would be flamed for this awful predicament you have been placed in.

I find this totally unbelievable that they have done this before and then live to do it again. Truly, perhaps it was the owners who should be euthanased what happens when it is a child.

Matey,s MCT is grade 2, the lymph nodes in the groin very swollen another result that I cannot remember what it was called he was a 9 and I think should be around a 5.

We went through all the options at least twice, she agreed that while he is eating , drinking etc and there is no blood in his faeces and taking into account he appeared stress free, which told her he is not in unbearable pain as I had hoped that she could fully understand me not wanting to put him to sleep. Her estimate without treatment 2 months. Her concern was putting him through a OP to remove the leg and she told me of a similar situation where she did lose the dog under anaesthetic but asked me not to let this sway my decision.

I have chosen to bring Matey home while he still has a reasonable quality of life, he is on pain meds daily which can be increased when needed. I asked for a antibiotic injection to fight against septicemia and meds which I start tomorrow.

I thankfully was on the ball with my dressings although I asked to purchase some of the NO Chew dressing she had used . Jelonet was the antibacterial dressing she applied first today and then I will carry on with Melolin which is a no stick dressing pad.

I received my holistic drops yesterday, so onwards we go but as soon as I know all is not well then I will know it is time.

Your vet sounds very insensitive and rude!

Euthanasia vs amputation- don't sound like great options to me and then to make you feel bad- well thats just terrible!

I can't believe they didn't bother with staging and grading. Also, Doggie chemo is not like human chemo- the doses used are much, much lower. The aim of the chemo is NOT cure, so it causes less adverse effects than chemo in humans does. So you might still consider it, it may buy some more time without compromising quality of life.
