  1. Yes she has a friend who is a vet, who thinks the puppy is not in any pain. She isn't a small animal vet but specialises in horses. The vet being a friend, I felt that both the vet and my sister were bringing the financial situation into the equation. I am really concerned the way the puppy moves, I wish I had a video of it to show you. I have a springer as well, they are athletic dogs, this poor little fellow has a go at running, one front legs throws out and the other leg is useless. It would be easier for me to just let this go, but my heart and head is saying not enough has been done.

  2. I am offering to pay for consultation but need to find the correct person near Grafton..she has accepted that.

She contacted the breeder this morning and they spoke to each other all warm and fuzzy..wants her to visit her, wants to see puppy.

Breeder said the vet told her to put puppy to sleep but couldn't do it. So obviously did nothing instead.

  3. I know it is hard when family members are involved. I know first hand how frustrating and torn you can be and I feel very sorry for you on this. I guess it would be hard for you to offer money for assessing this dog as well...is there an organisation like Lort Smith that your sister could get access to? My concern is that his problem may be just the start of things as his better limbs/joints are carrying the load..and who knows how solid they are. For those who are in rescue here...what are your ideas on getting for help or rescue for a dog in this predicament? I wouldnt be holding back my frustration though ....in my instance I would give my sister a. Option to accept my offer to pay for a consultation b. discuss the need/requirement to do what is best for the dog and follow through c. as a last option involve the authorities.

Again I understand that sometimes family members when involved can make it even more distressing. In the past I have a. rehomed for a family member and even bought one back to re-home off a family member.

Yes I am tired of 2nd guessing about this pup. I have concerns with his other leg, it is extremely muscular but is miss shaped. His front is extremely wide and flat. His hindquarters do not have very much muscle tone either, I was expecting the muscles to be very developed but he must be depending on that one working leg..he sort of drags the other bad leg and of course the elbow of that leg is not attached. She was going to have him x-rayed and asked me the approx cost then decided against it.

I did contact these people in Lismore http://www.animalrights.org.au/index.php

I am happy to help pay something to help him but don't know who she should go to.

  4. Sorry to be blunt but as a dog rescuer who takes on dogs with various illness sometimes, I don't think your sister sounds like a suitable owner for this particular dog. She didn't even do the basics.

I know. I am struggling with this myself..I can't say it to her though. She thinks that if he is well fed and being trained and is loved then it is enough.

  5. Sounds like this dog needs less concern with whose fault is it (some time has passed under the bridge) and well it isnt going to help this dog and its issues. Personally the fact is wasnt microchipped then is illegal...but is it microchipped now? Is it vaccinated now? Are you calling your sister out on a white lie when you say she tells you the vet is saying the dog is in no pain? No vet I know would decide if a dog is in distress based on the owners financial capability to pay a bill.

Apologies but I take a dim view on people who think they are doing the right thing in "saving" an animal by merely keeping it and loving it when it obviously needs a higher quality of care...is there any chance Dollygirl you can present the dog to a independant vet for examination? I would personally put more energy in seeing if there is anything medically possible to help this dogs quality of life. If the dog is deemed to be in pain or distress and despite the fact your sister loves it she is only being another one in the chain of people who are not doing right by this dog.

I totally agree redangel and I am struggling with this issue as well. I did originally push for the puppy to be returned to the breeder. I feel he was offloaded by the breeder as a simple option. I have made some suggestions to my sister on how she could try and raise money to help him but to no avail. She is speaking with me now and saying she can live with him as he is and it does make really angry that she hasn't done enough. My sister lives in Grafton and I am in Sydney, I didn't know how badly the puppy was effected until when on holidays up in Coffs spent 1 day with him.

The photo on my avatar is my springer and the springer lying down is my sisters.

He is microchipped and vaccinated now.

  6. My main concern is getting help for this puppy. The more I look into this, I don't think this kennel is a puppy mill, but a breeder trying to make money. I have found out that they are using at least 3 breeds and crossing at least one of them with a Poodle. I don't know conditions of the kennel. I only know about how the puppy was received by my sister. The vet that my sister is in consultation with is now saying "that is puppy is in no pain, then leave it alone." However I believe this is because of lack of funds from my sister, she has really taken on a dog that she can't afford and now loves him far too much to do anything but love him and look after him to best of her ability.

I am going to research into the this suggestion, which hit me of being very valid through the night, always our or my best time for insight.

I wonder if he might have been a "swimmer" puppy? I've only seen them as puppies but if they didn't get treatment I'm wondering if they turn out like you've described.

I have the breeders telephone number and when armed with as much information as possible will call her and see what come of this. I am not really interested in pursuing reporting breeder, since finding out a bit more personal information about her.

  7. After many vet visits, she has adopted a wait and see re the amputation as he is not in pain.

So the dog has not been in any pain, it was given away with by the sounds of it full disclosure from whoever bred it and you want to report them for what ?????

For not treating the puppy adequately while in their care. No vaccination, no microchip, no worming. It almost seems that the intention was to have the puppy put to sleep to save money. If he had been treated when it was first damaged then he would be normal now.

Unlikely in a small juvenile animal.

Good luck proving their intention, they may well have considered putting the pup to sleep, you argue to save money, the breeder may well argue in the best interests of the pup.

So is it usual practice (for reputable breeders) to find a home for a puppy that is not microchipped, vaccinated or wormed? I would have thought that caring dog breeders would do the best possible for their puppies, have I been misled?

    I thought microchipping was mandatory.

  9. After lots of research and poking and prodding, we have found the breeder. They were at one time a bonafide breeder..won't mention the breed but it wasn't springers. They were a registered kennel with DOGSNSW, not now though. Not sure now if she was running a puppy mill, my sister thought so but not sure where she is getting info. However regardless of being a "proper" breeder or not..she still did the wrong thing by the puppy. There is also a link to the kennel owned by a certain vet! Not sure where to take this now..I have the phone number. What do you think?

If you do find it do not make it public where it is or where the ad is. Do what you need to do privately.

Several years ago I saw a most disgusting photo & ad on a site & contacted several people I know interstate to see if they could go & make an offer for the dog & send it to me & I would transfer the money to them.

I put it on here with photo.

By the time I found someone to go & get it the ad had gone & they wouldn't answer the phone for days so I guess they had got several deserved abusive calls & asked for my post to be removed.

Best of luck. It is very distressing this type of thing.

Thank you, I will heed your advice. Have been very careful with our enquiries, these people are very cagey. Would like to think we could report them to the RSPCA but my research isn't supporting this. May leave it in the hands of a Rescue Organisation that are interested in the case.

  11. My sister has a 10 month old ESS. I knew he had front leg problems which happened when he was a few days, the dam rolled on him.

But I didn't realise how bad it was until I saw him last week.

My sisters neighbour bought a toy poodle from a puppy farm near Grafton..maybe Coutts Crossing and at the same time as purchasing the poodle was offered the then 4 month old male ESS.

They told them he was free. The story they gave was the leg was disclocated and need to be amputated most probably. The "breeder" had not wormed, vaccinated or microchipped him. He had been hand raised, as was not strong enough to fight for his feed.

The neighbours took the pup home. After showing him to my sister, they decided they did not, after all, want to take him on and were taking him back to the mill.

My sister was upset for the pup and asked for him, of course they promptly offloaded him. After many vet visits, she has adopted a wait and see re the amputation as he is not in pain. She loves him dearly however is limited with funds.

However when I visited them with my 15month old ESS, I found the injury most upsetting..his front has developed very wide he has limited use of the bad leg, cannot run properly and the good leg appears to me to be abnormal as well. (this is being x-rayed shortly)

I feel the breeder should be reported for abuse, however the neighbours refuse to give any information on where the puppies were obtained. We actively looked for the mill when she first brought him home, without luck, repeatedly hassled the neighbours, spoke with local dog rescues without any luck.

There was also a vet involved who did initial X-rays on puppy on behalf of the breeder (this is where amputation was raised). My sister is putting pressure on the vet for information re the breeder.

Anyone have any ideas who these people are? or any suggestion on what can be done?

  12. Amber goes nuts :) She has been very demanding this time and has been doing the barking for food. She also gets sooky too and wraps her front legs around my legs.

I still walk her though. Just not at off lead dog parks.

Yes I should be driving her in the car to take a walk, but have been too sick for the last month or so, so have been just standing at the beach, not doing too much walking…was just about fit enough to start walking, but have shingles in the head now..so am way too tired, maybe soon hopefully.

  13. Ha! It gets easier with experience but surgery is definitely easier again. I have asked a lot of people if their bitches (of any breed and lots of Gundogs) do this and not had one person say "yes" so will be interested to hear if anyone on here has had a similar experience.

Can you separate the dogs when you are out? Shut off half the house...at least then you could leave your girl with lots of enrichment toys. My girl also turns food possessive in season - kind of handy though because I give her a marrowbone in her crate and she tells off my male good and proper - obviously I am right there to supervise. Normally she's incredibly tolerant of him.

Yes I will be separating them when I am not at home..today had to go to Dr's and left her in the crate with a pigs ear..when I let her out she hadn't eaten the pigs ear, as the intent

ion seemed to be to parade it and tease the poor old dog on the special diet who thinks he is being starved. It is a circus at my house at the moment, well it has been a bit of a circus since she came to live with us, but now it is a 3 ringed circus!

  14. Hey dollygirl

I've got a field bred ESS and you've just described her perfectly when she's in season. Up early and runs and runs and runs and hunts like a thing possessed. Normally she is a very intense little worker but has the most delightful off switch in the house. However for the first 10-11 days in season she goes quite crackers!

I have a well fenced and steep bush block (normally houses chooks) that I let her just run like crazy on. Twice a year, when she is in season, I take the opportunity to weed and maintain it no matter what the weather so I can supervise "just in case." I have an entire male so some juggling inside with crates is necessary. I do as much if not more training as usual and every meal is worked for - stuffed Kongs, scattered dry, reward for QUIET in crate etc etc. She normally gets chicken frames alternated with dry food but this is the only time I give her marrow bones. Keeps her occupied through the worst of it.

As Em starts to settle down a little she's actually at her most fertile. About day 15-16 she starts to sleep in again and, by day 21, you can't drag her out of bed early to toilet unless it's with the promise of some training.

    I hope that helps!

    It does help, Thank you.

My ESS is a show ESS but all the same it must be a trait that is normal.

I wish I had your set up. I have cooped her up a bit I am afraid, normally take her to a dog beach each day and this uses her energy up. I will need to keep her on our large back deck and inside the house and only give her supervised breaks in the yard. Will give some thought about what I can do to occupy her, difficult giving her kong and chews at the moment as old dogs suffers from pancreatitis and can't have any treats and the ESS is possessive of her food. Looking forward to her surgery. :D

  15. After researching the best time to desex my ESS pet bitch, I decided to wait till after 1 season.

This morning my desexed rescue male let me know she was in season, she is 7.5months.

She has been uncontrollable all day..thinks she is starving, running and jumping through the house, barking for attention, barking for food, barking at old desexed dog.barking barking barking!!!

She is super super hypo, she is a high energy dog though.

Is this normal behaviour? It has been a while since I had a bitch in season, but from my memory, I thought they went quiet.

    Any suggestions?

  16. I love sprats combs and use them as a professional groomer. I get them from the uk as I haven't found them over here either. I don't mind paying they are worth it!

I'd also be interested to know if they are available here at a reasonable price.

My next choice brand wise would be Chris Christensen and then the original Greyhound brand.

    Ooh, thanks for the link!

    Thanks for your reply!

Which Chris Christensen comb could you use for stripping a Spaniels coat

  17. Hi there,

Haven't been around for a long long time and have been dogless for 3 years after loosing my little Schnauzer...twas broken hearted.I am picking up my new puppy in just over a week, An English Springer Spaniel, very excited.

I have a fair bit of experience grooming Cocker Spaniels...however it was way back in the 70's and 80's.

At that time we used a comb called Spratts 76, for carding/stripping the coat.

I leant mine many years ago and it was never returned, always thought it would be easily replaced but not the case anymore.

So I have found a company in the UK - Diamond Edge...however the price is 17 pounds and 38 pounds delivery! Does anyone know where they can be purchased preferably in AU or at least at a more reasonable delivery cost.

    Any help would be wonderful!

  18. I can feel your pain, having found my beloved 6 year old dog drowned at a neighbour's property, six days after running away with his brother.

I read once, that when your dog dies, part of your life goes with him, how true. The remaining dog is still depressed and fretting for his companion, I was in tears every day, I did a lot of googling and fell in love again - with a pup of the same breed, advertised at this website.

How easy was that?? The puppy, to my surprise, is very similar to my wasted friend. Maybe, you too, will in the future be able to have a dog you can love again, I hope for you.

Each day comes and goes and I feel no better, I am unable to talk or think of her without being upset.

Right from the beginning when she came to us, every time I was away from her I was frightened and fearful that something would happen to her.

I feel I have brought this fate on her, I now believe the strong force that exists in thinking and imagining things can make them happen.

I can't get another dog until my circumstance change and I can leave a puppy/dog by itself without imagining the worse, I don't know what it will take to make that happen.

  19. Dollygirl you have had two very traumatic experiences and yes some people might say it is just a dog but to some of us dogs are a very special part of our lives. You need to grieve and be angry about what has happened and give the losses a place in your heart and your memories. Losing 2 dogs in the same way is simply a random tragedy. I've lived on acreage and in the suburbs and had snakes at both locations but have never lost a dog to one. My younger sister has had a cat and a dog bitten by snakes, also in the suburbs. Both survived. Who knows why? And it doesn't matter how long you have your dogs for - I have my old girl (almost 16 and a half) booked in to be pts on 29/1. It is her time. I have told everyone I don't want to talk about it because I want to enjoy the time we have left and not stress her out with my blubbering. Even after all these years with her I'm still not ready. 12 months or 12 years - it doesn't matter. We love them and they love us and there is never enough time together.

Big hugs to you. Hopefully you will be able to open your heart up to another animal (even if it isn't a dog) sometime in the future.

Yes I know it is hard no matter how long you have had them, the what if's are still always there...my little jack that I lost was 10 yrs old that was hard because she was so much a part of me, when she was gone I could still see and hear her, would look for her. Dolly well she was sweet and I feel I have let her down. We have a real estate agent coming around I don't want this house anymore, I can't bring another dog in here ever and one day maybe when I retire and have more time I will get another.

I hope that you do enjoy the little time you have left with your girl, hopefully that time will bring you some peace....I will be thinking of you.
