You know the sad part.... I show a single hairless chinese crested

  2. My survey would look something like this:

    1) Age of dog - This is important to know so you know how much senior, regular or puppy food to stock. Also gives an idea of things like puppy wormers etc.

    2) Coat length (short, medium, long hair)- This gives you an idea of what grooming products to stock such as brushes, combs and shampoos relating to each coat length.

    3) Activity level - It's important to know how much exercise the dog gets. If a lot of people exercise their dogs frequently you can try out new equipment for walking such as bike attachments, special grip leads, harnesses etc.

4)Size of dog (small, medium, large, giant) - Another food related question and helps with sizing for collars, bowls, flea treatment etc.

    5) Health issues - (please specify) - Knowing what illnesses dogs have will help you know what health related products to stock.

Breed doesn't come into it if you are asking about coat length and size. Where the dog comes from has no impact on the business.

  3. When I was little I had a queen size bed and used to share it with 2 Great Danes. Stopped me from getting up in the middle of the night and waking my parents up because I got scared... hard to get scared with 2 danes in the room with you

Now I have my own house and dogs 2 of them sleep on the bed with us, the other has her own bed in the living room.

  4. Going to the dog park with the poodles I could be very rich... The amount of people with cavaliers or maltese that have asked me if they could use my DOG is crazy.

I usually just smile and nod and tell them sorry but SHE is desexed. They never want to use the poor white poodle, it's always the black one. I had one lady want to use him *cough*her*cough* because she wanted to make "black cavoodles".

  5. My mum used to do movies as her theme. She had Steel Magnolias, Midnight Cowboy, Ladyhawk, The Devil Wears Prada, etc.

One of mine if from a breeder who uses the word pink in all her kennel names. We were running out of options for good names with the word pink in them so settled on a song by the singer pink, he's "Get the party started".

  6. I have a cream poodle here... he is a VERY light cream, you would almost swear he was white until you see him standing next to an actual ice-white dog. He has black pigment but gets snow nose something shocking during winter.

I admit I did read this question as 'points' being darker ears, face etc do I can understand why people may have bitten as it's not allowable in the breed... But now it's been cleared up I completely understand wanting to breed for black pigment in a poodle!

Back when my mum was breeding poodles color definitely came into consideration. She only bred blacks but even within them you get different shades... Obviously you want to get the darkest black possible rather than a washed out looking color. Of course first and foremost is health, followed by conformation, but color is certainly there as well.

  7. I like the new rules with challenge points. I'll admit I have counted absentees on the old format, but always felt a little guilty in doing so (even though it was allowed). And baby puppies aren't elligible to compete in the challenge line-up so it was silly counting them as well.

elmaro, counting the actual dogs beaten is basically what the new system is... Absentees can't get you points on a challenge certificate.

  8. New exhibitor or not it's the dog being judged it has nothing to do with how new you are. Can't get a good enough dog to beat the grand champion... Well that's not really the owner of the grand champions fault, they started off with that dog as a puppy just like you.

I never expected big awards when I got my first puppy, heck when he was a baby I was just thrilled to receive nice comments from other exhibitors. When I get another dog eventually I still won't be expecting it to be a world beater just because I have a little more experience now... I will expect it to beat the other dogs only if it is good enough, and even then it's up to the judge on the day.

  10. I prefer regular shows. I love the general public asking questions and admiring the dogs, but I'm not a fan of the few who think it's a petting zoo.

I have a breed that people really want to touch... I don't mind if they ask first, but please don't just start rubbing your hands all over my dog, a lot of people (even some dog people) don't know that your never bend over a toy breed.

  11. We have a station wagon, and with one toy dog we have trouble fitting everything in!

By the time I pack the trolley, grooming box, esky, chairs, gazeebo, floor mat, travel crate... It gets squishy.

We are trading it in for a 4WD plus looking at getting a trailer down the track so my OH can take the 4WD to work on weekends and I can zip down to shows in my little 2 seater towing the trailer

  12. My boy actually won his first best in group the weekend after he obtained his 100 points. He looked like a lanky puppy up until that stage. Capable of winning breed, but not really in it for the group.

I get what you are saying though, I just think for a regular champion title it would be a good idea, then for grand or supreme have the extra requirements (groups, best in shows etc). It's interesting to see how other countries systems work.

  13. Nope - dog and bitch CC is worth one point regardless of the number of dogs or bitches present. BOB is worth nothing more. 8 CCs with one over 1 year old uner at leats 5 different judges = Ch. Pups under 6 months old aren't entitled to be awarded a CC but can be best dog or best bitch (and win BOB)

Has it's good and bad points like every other system :)

I like the sound of that, makes it even ground for those with small and large numbers in the breed, if you are the only one of the breed it takes 17 shows to get 100 points, whereas more popular breeds can do it in 4 shows with 25 point challenges.

  14. Circular Head Agricultural Society in Sunny/Rainy/Windy Stanley in North Western Tasmania, 3rd December, 2011:

  15. Advertisements have been around for donkeys years. The photoshopping has improved, but they are still the same... Sure it might influence some judges but if a judge is going to be influenced by a picture in a magazine who's to say they aren't going to be influenced by reading pointscores on DOL, or by friending people on Facebook. Does that mean we should stop ALL forms of advertising, ban photos of dogs from the internet and any form of publication? Of course not, I trust most judges to be honest and those who aren't... well... another day, another show, no skin off my nose as long as I've got a bottle of wine and a few friends to enjoy the day with.

  16. Ahhh so it's possible that at this time in Vic that those rare "outstanding" dogs have been found. This can happen in many breeds, numerically the odds are better in the bigger breeds but the phenomenon on Victoria is exactly what the Grand Champion title is all about to me. You should have to beat the best, those outstanding specimens of their breed, before being able to call your dog a Grand Champion.

    ^ This.

  17. We had a problem with the neighbors kids jumping our fence and using our yard as a shortcut... I used to collect the poop every day and deposit just under the fence.

They don't jump the fence any more and now I can do my daily clean-ups and put it in the bin.
