  2. We are on 8 acres with 2 staffords. They are contained within a smaller boundary by dog wire. I think that's what it's called, smaller squares on the bottom and larger ones on top?

My two are not escape artists and I have never seen them even attempt to get through. We have rabbits on our property outside of the fence and my two just sit at the boundary watching them hop up and down. They never jump so getting over the fence is also not a problem.

We also have a vegie patch that is surrounded by chicken wire and they don't get into that either. If they're inside they have no idea how to get out and have never attempted to go through or over it.

If you feel the need to get electric fencing it's probably a good idea but in my case is totally not needed thank goodness

  3. Thanks for your replys.

Going to change his diet first of all, I've had a few suggestions for Royal Canin so might give that a try.

Will put a cotton sheet over the existing bedding and I'm keen to try adding the oil to his food. I'll keep an eye on things over the next few weeks/months and see how it goes.

    To answer a few questions:

Yes Malaseb is the wash that I was given. We have bathed him once last night and it hasn't dried the skin at all, that was my first thought too.

He doesn't rub his face on the carpet, his collar is nylon so looking at changing that as he has developed a rash underneath it.

We feed him raw and bones occasionally but can look at increasing that, we have been giving liver treats only so far.

Are human antihistamines ok to use? dosage?

  4. I'm new to the world of dog allergies so I need a little advice on what to do to help my 5 month old staffy.

He has scratched behind his ears, around his neck and licked his feet for a few months now. His skin is dry and sometimes scaly so I took him to the vet this week to get it investigated. The vet has told me that it looks like he is just going to be a allergic staffy, no sign of mange there. We were advised to change his bedding as it might be a big cause of the problem. He currently snuggles up to our non allergic staffy on a bean bag type bed that is topped with a polar fleece banket. They seem to get cold during the night so I am hesitant to swap their bed for one of those snooza type ones that our vet recommended. Does anyone have any ideas for non allergic bedding?

Buster is outside during the day within a section of our property, about 4 acres. It's made up of some lawn and not much else at this stage as he have just built a house and the landscaping is "still in progress".

We have washed Buster in a medicated shampoo and we were given prodnesolone?? for him to start today, once a day for 3 days and then once every 2 days until finished, about a week away. Does this sound like a good thing to stop the itching? I have just read a few posts about the drug and I'm worried about side effects or whether I should be doing something else to get this under control. He was also given an injection at the vet on Monday night and I have noticed that he has been going crazy around food since then.

He is currently being fed a combination of supercoat puppy dry food and the fresh puppy roll. I think I should try him on other food and I'm interested to try one mentioned in previous posts, can't remember the name but know it's available at animal tuckerbox.

Any thoughts from other staffy owners or anyone with similar problems would be great, want to do the best I can for our little boy. :(

  5. All I can say is that there are good days and bad days with a puppy inside.....today was a bad day!!!

Oh dear. Went home at lunch time as I do every day during the week. Today I discovered that Buster has chewed our new floor mat that we purchased 2 days ago. Luckily only a small spot visible on the top, unfortnately not so small on the underside.

We have 1 staffy who is 3 and half years and not a problem inside at all. Buster our new puppy is 4 and a half months and has been left inside with Indy during the day. We initially started him on his own confined to his crate with the door open onto our ensuite, a place to sleep and a place to poo. Buster has been bad with separation anxiety and we soon learnt that he was more comfortable when around Indy, they sleep crated together and being around her during the day settles him from being away from me.

There have been several problems before, lost a few pairs of shoes and socks after forgetting to remove them from the area they are allowed in and last week got home to discover they had been playing tug of war with a lovely rug that was left on the couch.

To their defence it was my fault for not providing them (or rather Buster) with enough things to keep him occupied during the day. My hubby and I have been discussing leaving the 2 of them outside but still have a gate to sort out before the property is secure. Let me tell you that this will be done this evening when I get home!!

It's hard to decide what to do and whether it's the right time to do it but I think each dog is different and you really have to assess your dog by it's behaivour (or lack of it).

Good luck with it all, I hope you don't lose too many valuable items but it's all worth it in the end.

  6. Hi everyone,

Although this is a serious matter because it's so stressful, I had a little chuckle reading everyone's comments because my life has been the same for the last 5 or so weeks.

We added Buster (16 week old staffy) to our family after talking about getting another pup for at least 6 months. 2 days in I thought we probably should have thought about it for another 6 months because it was awful. I honestly thought that Indy our first staffy was the worst puppy for toilet training, crying etc but Buster wins hands down. Maybe I'd just forgotten how bad it is.

Buster still cries at night every now and then and is a little terror. He's just started the mouthing and biting stage so things are not joyous at home at the moment and just like Indy, he's terrible at toilet training.

Because staffies are such companion dogs and hate being left alone it tends to make things a little harder, well I think so anyway. I now have 2 dogs that follow me wherever I go when I am at home so doing the usual chores is very stressful.

It's so hard with a puppy and my family and friends all joke that I have 2 children, not 2 dogs. On the upside, we love our 2 staffies and couldn't imagine life without them. The love that they give back is unconditional and very much worth all the effort we put in now.

  7. I'm not sure I can help but thought I'd add what my 16 week old staffy pup is doing at the moment.

He is crated at night in our bedroom. We have another staffy, 3 years old, who is also in this same crate. I know that a lot of people are against crating 2 dogs together but this works for Buster as he has severe separation anxiety and has since the day we got him. Buster was the runt of the litter and seems to be a little behind in development not that we love him any less. He used to wake up during the night (sometimes more than once) and cry to be let out. Sometimes it was to go to the toilet but it was mostly to want and come and sleep with my husband and I. Not a suitable option really!! This has now stopped and he sleeps right through. Such a blessing.

We tried crating him by himself and he was a screamer, a really bad one! He would wake numerous times and cry for an hour at least and after several weeks it just didn't improve. Now with the company and warmth of our first staffy Indy he seems to have settled.

I would possibly try moving the crate into your bedroom if it's an anxiety issue. We're just about to try and move ours out into the loungeroom since things are going well at the moment but it has definitely helped Buster knowing that everyone in the family is together in the bedroom.

Good luck, I feel your pain :)
