  1. Unless you know the dogs health background and know exactly how/what they are feeding the dog I wouldn't say anything. Your advice no matter how good the intent, would be seen as criticism against themselves and would be ignored.
  2. I was at my Mums the other day and she has 2 border collies...someone was walking their dog on the other side of the street and the dogs were barking and running up and down the fence line. She made no attempt to stop them. When I asked her about it, she said they enjoy running up and down the fence and half heartledly told them to be quiet. I looked at her with utter amazement, looked at the guy walking on the road trying to control his dog and roared at mums two, they immediately halted and just looked at me. I looked at Mum and said that's how its done.
  3. We used to go to a very well known Vets franchise until my girl needed her baby teeth taken out. They quoted me over 600-00 for the removal of 2 teeth and kept asking me if I wanted her desexed at the same time. I kept telling them she is a show dog so No. In the end they had asked me so many times I felt they would desex her anyways. They also said they would shave her front leg, that there was no way around it. I rang the local vet who had operated on my other girl, their quote was 1/3 of the price. Took her down 2 days later, in the end they found 5 baby teeth that had not fallen out, they didn't charge me for the teeth removal, only the anaesthetic cost. Best part was they didn't shave her leg because she is a show dog. Vets need to take into consideration what the customer wants to, not just their own hip pocket. Yes the well being of the dog comes first but its the little things that make a huge difference. In the past 2 years I have heard of so many good stories about these vets and so many bad ones about the other vet. Glad I changed. Pays to shop around.
  4. Yes, more & more retirement villages are including in their advertising that people are able tp bring their pet with them. One trap in the fine print of some places, tho', is that is says they can bring a pet.... but once that pet passes on, they can't acquire a new pet. I don't know how widespread this is.... but it has caught a few people. Caution is to read the fine print. My Mother in law lives in a block of units like this, there are a few animals but once they die the owner cannot get another one.
  5. Nope. Its like people, you love some, you like some and then you hate some. 2 out of 3 of my dogs I like, the other one I love with all my heart and would run til the end of the earth for her. Dont get me wrong, the other 2 arent lacking in anything, my hubby loves one, my daughter loves the other, So it kinda works in our household.
  6. I have been reading the thread and one question I have keeps popping up. Average Joe wants a puppy, the guy next door staffie is pregnant accidently to the dog down the road. Average Joe had no idea about all these regulations about permits etc and buys puppy from next door. How are they going to stop that? Would average Joe even care? If they can buy a puppy for $100-00 from next door why would they buy from a registered breeder for $1000? How is this all going to enforced? Backyard breeders will still be doing what they always do unless the average Joes knows exactly what the laws are and the council/rspca pounce on everyone who has a new puppy and start asking questions about where said puppy came from.
  7. mine are getting an 'an only child hamper' 1x 6 pack Christmas Dinner Muffins 1x bag Ginger Bread Men Biscuits 1x bag Bacon Christmas Trees 1x bag Cranberry Barkscotti They are home made doggy treats made by some lovely ladies that sell them at the local markets.
  8. We adopted another dog from the pound, she was around 1 year old. We ended up taking her back because she terrorised my older dog. Maddie was there first, no way would i get rid of her
  9. On my paved area I make up a solution of the Wheelie Bin cleaner/disenfectant. Two caps to a bucket of water and just swish it over the smelly area after I have cleaned up the poo etc. I used a hard bristle broom and gave it a quick scrub while it was wet. Two weeks later and all I can smell is the cleaner.
  10. I have been under the impression that we are not allowed to know how many of our breed is being entered. Was told in case you are points hunting and dont want the competition and only enter shows where your dog will be the only one in its breed.
  11. 6 years and just over a year. We got the 2nd when my dog passed away but the oldest didnt want anything to do with her so we ended up getting the 3rd. 2nd and 3rd dogs play together and will be company for each other in their old age. 1st dog gets to laze around and just be herself.
  12. I have long coated dogs and have found poeple tend to ask first before touching. We say no and explain that they are just about to go into the ring or we are getting them ready. Afterwards, go for it. Havent had anyone pat without asking. Have had alot of people stop at AG shows, ask questions and havent wanted to pat in case they mess up the coat.
  13. Being at a show and the judge thinks the dog is another breed
  14. My two girls are entire, I am not a breeder and have no intention of breeding at present BUT I do show them. I cannot show desexed dogs. If and when they are no longer show dogs and we do not wish to continue the line they will be desexed BUT only then.
  15. Last year when I got new puppy, the show my other dog was entered had just closed. I rang the secretary explained about just getting the pup. She was just doing the catalogue but allowed me to express post the entry. Another show same weekend took my payment over the phone and hubby faxed the entry from work. In certain circumstances I am pretty sure most people are flexiable depending on the closing date. I wouldnt try to enter a show that had closed more then a week before tho, thats just pushing my luck a litle to much.
  16. The vet we currently goto are of opinion that about every 2 years for vacs is fine. When we got the puppy we took her to a differant vet for reasons to long to explain and was late with the last needle and they wouldnt give it to her unless we started all over again. Always had the feeling we were railroaded into that needle and it wasnt neccessary. Have never been back and have since returned to the orignal vet. Sorry to hijack the thread but was is Titre test? For dogs shows they must be vacinated, would showing the results of this test be enough to prove they are covered?

    Toys

We gave our new pup toilet roll holders or plastic lids. The best toy tho is a frisbee. Its hard plastic which can be chewed and the pup loves carting it around flipped up over her head. Watching her trying to pick it is hilarious to. She has learnt if she bounces on it just at the right place it will shoot across the floor. Then she barks at it and gives chase and starts the whole process over again.
  18. My mother used to work in a supermarket. You can be charged with stealing for letting your children eat food before you have paid for it whether or not you had intended to pay for the item. Tasting a grape before you buy a bunch is also considered stealing. Supermarkets do not push the rule tho, they do not have enough staff to police it. The number of people that do not pay for eaten food outweighs people who do. I have taught my Daughter that she cannot open anything until its paid for.
  19. We have two undesexed girls and 1 desexed girl. Managing the two isnt hard, its just common sense and watching them to ensure puppies do not happen. One is in season at the moment and because we have a low side gate, she isnt allowed in the back yard unless someone is with her just in case. We havent had any trouble so far with dogs jumping the fence and i hope it never happens. We have brought a higher gate, other half just needs to install it. And why to people assume just because your dog is entire that your going to breed from them? Even our vet assumed we were going to breed. my mother told me we were being cruel and heartless, irresponsible dog owners for not getting them desexed and *gasp* showing them. how dare we subject them to such cruelty!
  20. My three have their moments but if they dont eat it then it goes into the fridge for the next night and they dont get a biscuit afterwards (2x2). They loooove these and will do just about anything for a 2x2. If they are being overly fussy I break up a liver treat and mix it in and I find they then will rummage through to find the bits and eat the dinner in the process. They do not overly like dog rolls, or anything with roo meat. If they had their way they would eat chicken every night.
  21. If it helps to prevent deaths or severe injury to people then I am for it but I doubt it will make irresponsible dog owners all of a sudden responsible. It will make already responsible owners review their fencing etc and to ensure their dogs do not roam the neighbourhood.
  22. My two both love getting stuck into a full toilet roll. The pup is known to manuveur the roll off the holder and then she manages to spread little bits of it all over the house. They both love chewing on empty rolls to. Mine are toilet followers, the pup is always in there with me for a cuddle, the older one just sits at the door, protecting me from intruders. The pup will bark at dogs on the TV and then run into the hallway to try and find them. Really confuses her that she can see them but cant find them. She also is fascinated with the bird and birdcage. She half climbs onto the bottom of the cage and pushes it around with her back legs. She chews anything, takes dvd covers from the cabinet and chews them, anything that is at her height is fair game. Pup also has a basket for her toys, she will climb into the basket to eat her biscuits or bury her biscuit in it for later. Every so often she will curl up and have a snooze amongst her fluffies. She has a fetish for my daughters slippers and only hers. We gave her an old pair of hubbies but she wont have anything to do with them. Pup cannot go down stairs yet, so when she wants to go outside, she jumps into the laundry basket and waits patiently to be carried down. The other girl will only go downstairs if you tell her "off you go" and pretend to open the door, then she scoots through the doggy door and goes downstairs. Both are talkers and will only talk when they want something and I am not paying attention.
  23. Never had a dog save me but she was brillant none the less. When my daughter was a baby, Phebes would be guard dog. She would stand between her and the person looking and left no doubt in any ones minds that she was protecting my DD. if they got to close, Phebes would issue a low growl. If I was outside and she was sleeping and woke up, Pheobe would come to the back landing and bark until i came upstairs. She did the same when the phone rang. Pheobe wasnt a large dog, she was a small white fluff ball but with a huge personality.
  24. We use cable ties and black plastic clips bought from bunnings to make a gate, they are also easier to remove, after awhile the springs tend to go out of shape and are hard to remove. We have 12 panels and take ours to dog shows and it packs flatter with ties.
  25. Ignore him, he attacked your parenting skills to make it personal. Any reply would be just feeding his ego and giving him another opportunity to publish his opinion. Besides, you cannot argue with stupid, no matter how hard you try. They will always have an answer. They are convinced your the one who is stupid and beyond reasoning with. They will patronize you and twist your own logic to suit their needs.
