  1. It is very hard to stop a puppy jumping all together. Just do the best you can to minimise it.

I also try to teach my pups when going down stairs to go down slowly and walk all the way to the bottom. One of my dogs, now 18 months, when was a pup would leap with 5 stairs to go

A few weeks ago my pup, 16 weeks at the time, was coming down some stairs in the yard off the retaining wall. She did an excited leap, as puppies do, from the grass onto the stairs..........but completely missed the stairs and jumped off the 1 metre high wall :eek::eek::eek: Lucky she commando rolled when she landed. She is now very careful coming down the stairs. At the time I nearly had a heart attack, but now I can laugh about it

  2. I have just recently completed a beginner course. This is my second agility dog and this dog I decided I to trained contacts using SG method. I agree the club training method differers, for example no target.

I think what you need to remember these course are catered for people doing agility for the first time and a lot of people do not continue on after this course. So 10 weeks of foundation work people would drop out!

I started foundation training long before we started the beginner course. So by the time we got to the beginner course my girl knew her end contact position without the actual target.

My recommendation is to work on you foundation skills at home and start the beginner course when you think you dog is ready to start on the equipment.

Also, you can pick up cheap seesaws so you can work on this also at home.

  3. But, I still can't understand that her leg could have been broken that easily!

Surprisingly it can happen very easily. When my pup fractured her elbow is 3 places she did this in the yard and we have no idea how! I have heard a story of a puppy breaking their leg while running in the yard because there was a small pot hole in the lawn.

Like persephone said - puppies can get very tangled in the lead and also run back and forward behind and in front of the person walking.

I think it would be extremely difficult to provide negligence. Therefore I think it is best to focus your energy on the pups recovery. From personal experience I found the worry of keeping my puppy quiet more stressful than the actual accident :o

It is very likely it was just a very unfortunate accident:(

  4. Your poor baby :(

My dog, now 17 months old, fracture her elbow in 3 places with 1 of the fractures through her growth plate when she was 11 weeks old. She had surgery and a screw and pin. The pin was removed as this was through the growth plate but the screw will sways stay.

Today, you would never know this happened

As you vet would have told you with a fracture throught the growth plate there is a change it could affect growth. Chances are though this wont happen.

My recommendation is to get a crate for your puppy as the recovery from surgery is very important and therefore you need to keep your pup as quiet as you can. We crated our pup at night and when we were not home. Unfortunately this meant her spending a lot of time in her crate, but we decided her recovery was the most important thing.

  5. Tifsport :thumbsup:Link

It is used for sporting fields and golf courses.

We have 5 large dogs so My OH spent a lot of time researching to find a grass that would last and spoke to greenskeepers. Even where the dogs run regularly it will wear but there is still grass.

I believe it is not cheap........but I imagine it is cheaper than re turfing every few year.

  6. Back to the hips -

do the dogs with good scores put them straight out behind or out to the side like a frog?

All straight out in this household.

My female labs do this. Usually when they are having a stretch. They stretch their legs straight out behind them so their tummy is almost touching the ground. These girls have great hips scores - 0:0 and 1:1. My other dogs don't do it and growing up our family dogs did not do this either.

  7. I used Phil Thomas (Queensland Veterinary Specialists - Chermside), very happy. He counted 5 on the ultrasound but said 5-7 likely, my bitch delivered 6. Cost wise it was $150 including a written report.

    IMO absolutely WORTH the money!

I also go here. Last 2 pregnancies Phil has been spot on with the number of pups.

I know some normal vets (not repo specialists) have machines and will do ultrasounds for about $50 however they will simply confirm the pregnancy. I prefer to pay extra so I have an idea of how many puppies to expect.

  8. I feel your pain. :(

Last year my 11 week old pup fractured her elbow in 3 places, with one of the fractures through her growth plate. She had surgery the same day and got a screw and pin. The pin had to be removed as this was through the growth plate, but the screw is stayed.

The post op instructions were no running, jumping or playing for 6 weeks. For the first week I found this very stressful as it is very hard to keep a pup still and I was so worried she would hurt her leg again. We ended up crating her whenever we were not home. Unfortunately as we work this was for long periods, but it was the only way to keep her quiet. I had to tell myself that is only for 6 weeks and if she does not heal well it will have live long impacts.

As one of the fractures was through the growth plate there was a change her leg would not grow properly. Lucky this did not happen. She is now 16 months old and you would never know what happened.

Some things that worked for me during recovery:

    - Find some games to play with your pup that require your pup to be still. Like food refusual games, sits, stays. You need to wear your puppy out by getting her to think. I found I would have to sit with her on the lounge room floor for hours every night.

    - Carry her around the house. Wherever I would go so would my pup. I would even lock her in the bathroom with me when I was having a shower.

    - If you can secure her in the car take her for drives.

If you keep your pup quiet so her leg can heal she will be good as new in no time.

    Good Luck.

  9. I only have a small "kit" but all are essential.

    - Paw Paw Ointment

This stuff can be used for everything! (Also great for people)

    - Bentadine

I have oitment and liquid as it depends what I need to use it for.

    - Lectric Soda Cyrstals

Easy was to induce vomitting. This save me alot of money this year when my dogs found the easter egg stash!!!

    - Rubber Gloves

    - Cotton wool balls

    - Tweezers

Must be a pair suitable for removing ticks. I was caught out once when I found a tick at 10.30pm and the

tweezers I had were not suitable.

  10. I cannot believe any vet would say any heart murmur is "probably innocent" and has a 90% chance of resolving. How the hell would they know without very expensive specialist testing? .

The vet wrote on the health check that is probably innocent. The breeder is the one telling the buyers that this is normal for 6-8 week old puppies and will resolve.

When the buys vet spoke to the breeders vet, let just say she was no so confident.

  11. The presence of the puppy murmur is not in dispute, the liklihood of it being innocent is in dispute - the breeder is prepared to wait and see, and stand by her offer to refund if it does not disappear in a very short period of time - the family is not prepared to wait despite admitting that they are not eligible for a refund if the murmur does disappear. The actions of the family are also disputed.

This is untrue. They do they they are entitle to a refund regardless of the outcome in 4 weeks time.

What the breeder is offering is wrong. They should not have to wait to see if it clears, especially when the breeder has said they cannot have the puppy if it is clear.

The breeder wanted full payment for the pup Friday (1 week before pick up which IMO is weird!).

They did not want to pay for a pup no cleared. So the condition needs to be judged on how it stand today.....not what might happen.

Jed provide a good example, you don't pay a deposit on a car and when you do to make full payment the tell you it is not working, But that is ok it should come good.

  12. I think this breeder needs to consider what she is saying before accusing someone of harassing.

When they requested a email her response was simply NO.

In emails All they have done is simply stating their consumer rights and that they are prepared to fight for them. I think most people would do the same.

She should not knowingly be selling puppies with health issues. This IMO is not ethical breeding.

The breeder has Slandered them in the emails in several occasions and when they asked "do not email me again" what did she do.....email back.

No one is forcing her to reply to emails sent.

  13. I left put these conversations because they do not have the fact that the puppy has a 2/6 heart murmur, the buyer broke the sale due to this and the breeder is refusing a refund. Conversations leading up to this do not change this.

The buyer did not get the email until late in the week and having 2 children with many sports activities did not start thinking about the health check until a few days latter. They spoke to me I on the weekend and I did not know much about heart murmurs so I said I would ask my vet as I was already scheduled to see them Monday. My vet advised do not buy a puppy with a heart murmur as there is a risks it could leave t heart disease.

This day they also called the breeder. I recommended to her to ask to delay payment until the puppy is cleared. When the buyer asked this the breeders immediate response was she did not feel comfortable selling a puppy to someone who has concerns about the puppies health..............not a repines anyone would have expected. Te buyer did really wanted the puppy so did not push this matter further.

The next day she had a appointment with her vet for her other dogs vaccinations, so she thought she would take the health check from the breeder. The vet was concerned and said she would call the vet.

Can I add here in the original email from the breeder she offered to buyer to call her or the vet........so I don't know why that had to ask?

The breeder then called the buyer, Pretty much asking why her vet is calling. AT THIS TIME the buyer had not hear back from her vet so there was no change in her decision about taking the puppy.

Can I add, IMO the breeder sending an email to advise of the condition with no information about what she will do of the condition does not go away and also expecting payment the following week is just not good enough!!

So anyway after the buyer vey called the vet that did not health check and she could not say the decision wAs we cannot take a puppy with a heart murmur, They did not want to called and ask again about delaying payment as the breeder was no responsive to the suggestion in a previous conversation.

So I really don't think any of this changes the fact the puppy has a heart murmur, Innocent or not it is a heart murmur, The breeder wanted full payment before the puppy was cleared, and so them to take the puppy home, and she is refusing refund!

  14. But the OP said that the office of fair trading said they couldn't do anything because the seller wasn't a business.....???

That is right. They can negotiate with her, But they cannot force her to provide the refund. My sister is law has tried negotiating. They even offered for her to keep $100 of the deposit for her trouble. This woman just does not see reason.

  15. Thanks :) There Qld Office of Fair Trading has this info. Did not look here though.

They actually emailed the breeder a link to the similar info from office of fair trading referenced the page that says "no refunds are illegal". The breeder does not think their is a problem with the "goods", even though she emailed them a copy of the the vet check with states heart normal "NO", because she believes it will go away. Which is may, but no-one can be sure of this,

The problem comes to what Allerzeit, she is not a business. You would have to think that if they take this in front of a judge these rules will apply. If not, I am going to be very disheartened with our legal system!!

  16. My babies at 4 weeks of age

Ruby girl , Ruby boy , Black and Tan Boy, Black and Tan boy

    Beautiful babies!

Do you breed tri cavs? If not can you recommend anyone.

If you have seen my post in General forum my sister in law is currently having a very unpleasant experience with a breeder where she had put a deposit down on tri female puppy and at the 6 week health check the vet detected a 2/6 heart murmur. The breeder wanted full payment for the puppy a few days after this so they asked if they could wait until the puppy's next vet check scheduled for just before 8 weeks before they made the final payment. She did not agree. So as they did not want to take the puppy without this clearance they asked for their deposit back in which she refused. .

  17. I was just thinking - can the breeder even legally do that (refuse to sell them the pup, but keep the deposit)?

Isn't one of the things often mentioned as a downside to taking deposits is that, as a breeder, if you change your mind on a buyer it's too bad if you've taken a deposit from them, as you are still legally obliged to sell them a pup?

I don't think they can, which is why they are going to take the matter further.

The breeder does not believe she is refusing sale as they broke the contract of sale first. She has missed the point of WHY they broke it. They did not want a puppy with a heart murmur!!

Another thing (yes it keeps on getting worse and worse) is her terms and conditions state her undertaking is ethical and transparent breeding To ensure you receive a happy and healthy puppy. So she says she can keep their deposit as her t&c state the deposit is non refundable and refund is at breeders discretion........but what about her undertaking! I don't like the way she manages her t&c as they are a link at the bottom of the enquiry form. It does not say please read my t&c nor does she reference to these when asking for the deposit.

  18. The breeder has still not budged on her offers. She says she will wait until the 12 week check and if the puppy still has a murmur she will refund the deposit.

She cannot understand that because she expected full payment yesterday, the murmur should be judged on what it is now, not in 4 weeks time. Also if the puppy is healthy she keeps the puppy and their deposit.

They have told her if this is the case they should have the option to buy the puppy if it gets the all clear. The breeder has said she will not sell them the puppy. However in her opinion the fact that she won't sell It to them does not apply as they broke the contract of sale when they asked for the deposit back because they did not want to buy the puppy with a health issue.

You known what is worse........the puppy is on DOL and her website for sale. :mad

The breeder has called my sister on law 2 faced. When my sister in law called the breeder after she received the health check form stating the murmur she asked if they could delay final payment until the puppy was cleared. The breeders response was "I don't know if ti want to sell my puppy to someone who thinks the puppy is not healthy". This took my sister in law by surprise, as it would anyone, So she said that she is not saying she does not want it.

  19. What a shame you didn't separate your escapees from the rest when they went back home - a lesson for all of us.

You know I thought of is a few days after it happened. But by then it was already too late! I am cranky at myself for not thinking of this. At the time I was more concerned about the dogs that had been in the pound as it really was not a nice place.

    Don't you love hindsight!!
