  1. That's right I have a 22 month old Chinese Crested with a broken leg and a new 10 week old boxer puppy. I spoke to my vet who suggested I feed a good range of different food such as mince, chicken necks and frames, pasta, rice, eggs, even fruit and veges...in other words variety. He said that I could add omega 3 to the older ones diet if I liked but if I feed variety there is really no need and in his opinion omega wont hasten the healing process. He also recommends puppy kibble, but NOT supermarket stuff. I was lucky enough to see the senior vet who really knows his stuff. I am confident enough that what I am now feeding is a good basis for their diet. Thankyou for all your responses.

  2. Ah now eggs are one thing I have an abundant supply of. How many eggs per day is ok? And whites and yolks or just yolks? I've heard of the feeding shells to dogs, but worried the young one will choke on shells. I am cooking them some pasta as we speak just as a nice treat to go with their mince. I have never been a fan of any dry food but it's always handy to have a packet on standby as it's convenient to feed when in a hurry and nothing else is available. And yes vet recommends dry food.

  3. Hi there, I am going out to get some pet mince from the butchers today because the tinned food smells gross, I've never been a big feeder of tinned food because to me it smells the same when it goes in as when it comes out (and visa versa). I realise if I get mince it wont have any additives like the tinned puppy food does. So what can I add to promote healthy bone growth for my 10 week old boxer puppy and for my smaller dog to speed up the recovery of his broken leg? I've googled for info but can't really find anything specific to dogs only humans for aiding broken bone recovery and I am reluctant to give human remedies to dogs without checking first. Omega oil is something that came up. Also tinned whole sardines...but the dogs aren't keen and left them to stink out my house.

I'm off to the vet Thursday for puppies shots and will ask for advice then - but if I could have some suggestions here to run past her that would be good, as being just a routine vaccination I will get the young vet who doesn't have the knowledge of the senior vets.

By the way I also feed chicken necks to both dogs who love them, and Pal puppy kibble for the puppy.

  4. You could try putting some PawPaw lotion on it. It's not toxic (far as I know) I've used it on my Chinese Crested who's always getting rashes of some sort. He's licked some off in the past and hasn't hurt him. Another thing I use with great success is Curerash baby powder, but that may not work in your dogs case. Whatever you use with it being so close to his mouth he'll probably lick it off before it has time to work. Both are available at most supermarkets or chemists.

  5. Ok I'm curious now...what on earth is alpha roll?

Decades ago, when people were observing interactions between unrelated wolves that they had placed in an enclosure together, they saw what they thought was the alpha wolf pushing a subordinate wolf onto the ground by their neck and pinning it there to assert its dominance. Long story short, some people use this technique to assert dominance over their domesticated dogs.

What will actually occur within a stable wolf pack is a subordinate (usually an offspring of the alpha wolf, which is by definition the primary breeding individual) will volunteer a position on the ground. Canids do a lot of posturing and subtle body language to communicate so they don't have to be physical with each other. If a wolf is actually forcing another wolf onto the ground by its neck, it is almost always about to kill it.

If you want to create a dog that is fearful, or reactive/aggressive to being touched around its neck, alpha rolls are a great way to go. You can get away with it on some dogs, in many you are creating far worse behavioural problems than you started with.

Also, and I've said it before, dogs aren't wolves. And they don't think for a second that WE are wolves either.

Oh dear...I have taught both of my dogs to roll over onto their backs...the german shepard will go over when I make a gun shape with my hand and say bang...then down she goes as if dropping dead...her reward is that I always rub her tummy which she loves. I've also taught my Chinese Crested to roll over, I did this out of necessity as he is prone to rashes on his tummy area and I need to check. I taught him this by pushing him down by the neck...he now will do it easily for food rewards if I tell him roll over. Now you've got me thinking I've done something horribly wrong.

  6. Call me a bad dog owner but I would not be rushing off to the vet just because my dog vomited twice. If the dog was flat, off food etc - I would rest them and observe as the poster has done. If I thought the dog was bloating I would, of course, have been at the vets asap. Glad the problem resolved and was nothing serious.

ah yes but she is also due for her booster vaccination...how convenient :)

  7. Well another sleepless night for me as I was worried and also checking on her every 2 hours...she seemed fine, just sleeping on her bed, probably a little confused as to why mum was shining a torch at her every 2 hours. So I went off to work at 6.30 this morning all bleary eyed (already in the poo at work for having time off with dog issues - other dog broken leg - long story...not my week). She seemed ok before I went and I came home at lunch time and she seems right as rain. Rang vet and they don't have a clue either, suggested maybe just a type of Gastro. Have a vets appointment tomorrow where I shall discuss in more detail just to make sure all is well but otherwise she's made a miraculous recovery.

  8. Morty was only about 5mths old when I ducked into the lane to bring the garbage bin back in - little bugger slipped out the gate behind me and went running down the lane... I chased him calling him, hes a puppy so completely ignoring me just loving the opportunity to run run run! unfortunatly what I realise it that he is running with a pair of my undies in his mouth (I had been getting the washing off the line before bringing in the bin) flapping about in the breeze

Next thing he disappears into a neighbours back yard through their open gate, I get there to find him sitting on the ground giving a pair of my undies to my neighbour who was laughing so very loudly giving Morty lots and lots of pats

I bundled the monster up, took the undies back and fled back to my house, I could hear the neighbour laughing all the way on my way back ....

    little sh%t that he was!

Oh yeah what is it about dogs and undies?? My little chinese crested MoJo used to go into my daughters room or my room and bring out undies, bras and socks, then leave them scattered around the lounge room. Only embarrassing if we happened to get visitors and I hadn't picked them up...other wise it's just funny.

  9. Dogs vomiting can be anything from heat stress, to a bacterial/viral infection, to a foreign body in the stomach.

yes, dogs can and do get gastro.

they can get most infections/problems which humans suffer from. They can also get PARVO

keep a close watch on her tonight .. don't offer food, but do offer her small amounts of water often ..and check the colour of her gums ..

phone the emergency vet number if you notice any changes !!!

Thanks but it shouldn't be parvo as she is vaccinated...I will keep a close eye on her...I really don't need anymore vet bills grrrrrrrr

  10. Ok this is weird...took my German Shepard for the usual walk today, started off just like usual, she was excited to be going out like she always is, then halfway through the walk she spews up, then stops n lays down...very out of character. Then we got her to get up and keep on walking and she spews again and lays down and refuses to get up. So I had to call my daughter to come pick us up in the car. Get her home and she sorta looks flat but otherwise ok. Is sleeping on her bed atm. This has never happened to me (my dogs) before. However I know if I get gastro or an upset stomach of any kind I act pretty much like she did. So whattya reckon? Can dogs get gastro?

By the way she doesn't socialise with other dogs cept our own pack. We live in the country away from any other dogs.

  11. I have just read all of these posts with great interest as my little chinese Crested MoJo broke his leg only a few days ago. We have only just started doing agility and both love it. I asked the vet if he will ever be able to get back into it and the vet said there's no reason why he shouldn't be able to make a complete recovery and be back into the agility in a few months. This made me very happy :) I would imagine the vet knows what agility entails, he has his own dogs and see's dog owners everyday.

MoJo is nearly 2 years old and broke his leg at the shoulder so has pins which need to be removed in 8 weeks. Chinese Crested's arn't big dogs, have long legs and are very agile, mine weighs about 7 kilos. Hope all of this is in his favour, I imagine it would be more difficult for a bigger, heavier framed dog.

I hope the vet is correct...only time will tell

  12. MoJo is doing well now. The vet says he should make a full recovery in 3 - 4 months and should be able to get back to his agility which we really both enjoyed.

Thankyou all for your support during this tough time.

He is being thoroughly spoilt - breakfast, lunch and tea in his bed, and sleeping in with me at night...somehow I got this strange feeling after 8 weeks sleeping in my bedroom this will be a permanent arrangement. Unfortunately he bought home new friends from the vets...fleas. When you own one of these dogs (Chinese Crested) you just don't get fleas...I have been executing them as I see them.

I have decided to go ahead and get the Boxer puppy...the breeder will hold him for a bit longer and I will have to crate them both till MoJo's leg is completely healed...interesting times ahead.

  13. I can't see why you can't leave them outside. You've said you'd already sussed it out to make sure it's safe so there should be no probs. Yeah Americans can be a bit OOT I was gangbashed in one of their forums.

Dogs love being outside. I am going to be a Boxer owner soon too, the puppy is 7 weeks atm...do you have pics?

  14. Oh dear .... while I am SO glad your boy's home :) :) ... a boxer puppy bouncing on him any time in the next 4-5 months is probably not the best thing .

... IF you think you can manage two completely different dog types/needs/timetables for a while .. then do it happily ...

    what would I do?

I would do it ..but then again I am a pragmatist , and have different 'asks' from my dogs , and don't go away to work during the day ..your scenario is much ,much different, and I don't envy you this decision time .

Hope it all works out for you ...

hmmm pragmatist?...now where did I put that dictionary?

I work only part-time and on the longer shifts I am able to come home and check dogs if I have to, I am lucky as I work only 5 mins away.

Starting to feel more positive about all this...I mean for goodness sake's I've raised 2 human babies....how hard can one invalid dog and one young bouncy puppy be? Time to go crate shopping me thinks

  15. well MoJo is a 95% indoor dog, and I was planning on the new boy to be 50% indoor 50% outdoor dog especially being summer but he will of course be sleeping inside at this stage.

I wouldn't ask the breeder to hold him for as long as 8 weeks but maybe another 2 as I don't want him to be too old when I get him.

I never thought to crate train the new pup but could be a good idea...thanks

Oh and my son is still very upset and depressed about the whole episode, I don't know how long it will take him to get over this, if ever

  16. He's home :) He has metal pins inserted in his leg/shoulder. Is is very whiney, but he is such a sooky la la. And yes I will try not to blubber over him. He is on vets orders to have almost complete bed rest for 2 weeks, then light exercise, gently increasing until 8 weeks when the pins will come out.

But I have a problem...I was due to pick up my new boxer puppy in a weeks time. I've been waiting for this pup since before the bitch was pregnant, actually I've been waiting much longer as I've always wanted a boxer pup for many, many years. Now I don't know what to do, I can't ask the breeder to hang on to him for 8 weeks or even 4 even if she's willing to do that I really wanted to bond with him while young. Hubby says to just keep them apart but I want the new boy to be a part of the family, not tossed outside or in a separate room. I also don't want to resent the new puppy if it hurts MoJo...I don't know what to do....what would you do?

  17. Thankyou for your kind words. it has really helped me. I've been up all night watching the clock, crying and counting down the hours till I can go see him. Leaving to go to the vets in about 10 mins....Isn't it amazing how life can change in an instant, one minute I have a happy, healthy, playfull dog and the next he's all broken. I hope he is ok I will keep you posted.

  18. My little dog MoJo a chinese crested broke his leg tonight. We were fooling around and my son fell over him somehow, and his leg got broken. He cried blue murder and we rushed him straight to the vets screaming all the way. The vet gave him some pain relief but he still cried. Of course I cried too, still am. This dog is my heart dog I would be absolutely devastated if anything should happen to him. He has had to stay at the vets tonight, I didn't want him to, I wanted to stay there with him but they wouldn't let me. I couldn't bring him home because he'll need pain relief injections every 4 to 6 hours which I am not able to do. He had an x-ray and his leg is broken at the shoulder and will be difficult to fix, most likely needing pins. I'll know more tomorrow. I will be there first thing sitting on their doorstep. I can't sleep and I know you people will know how bad I feel. No-one understands the love between me and my dog except maybe you people. My whole life revolves around him. Someone talk to me and keep me going through this long dark and sad night

  19. I use those round exercise trampolines...I think you are meant to jog on them..? I paid around $5 for mine from garage sales. They are virtually indestructible. Best dog beds ever! I've had mine for about 5 years now....good value for money! Then I go to St Vinnies (or more garage sales...did I mention that I love garage sales?) and buy old blankets for around $1 each to make them more comfy. I don't bother to wash the blankets...just throw them away after a month or so.
