  1. Sounds like you just opened up the playing field quite a bit. What dogs have you had in the past, what dogs would you like in the future and maybe breeders and owners of those particular breeds could give you a few pros and cons. I have golden retrievers and can't fault them, I breed with temperament as one of my key elements, I have 3 children between 10 yrs and 20 months so a tolerance is very important. My goldens go crazy if a car rocks up. they don't usually bark otherwise. All mine bark to let the visitor know that they are their to be spoken to and played with. There is no protection in it, but the alert system is perfectly fine with me. I have 4 running together majority of the time at the moment, I do obedience with the 2 younger ones, and they don't seem to need individual exercise however I live on 5 acres, so a house block i would recommend regular training either obedience or tricks and plenty of interaction along with a game of fetch most afternoons should have a very content goldie. They are an intelligent breed and do better with a combined intellectual stimulation as well as physical rather then either.
  2. so what is it about the hocks that needs to improve in your opinion to correct all of these GSD's that can't walk properly ? First it was their back legs, now it's their hocks. I don't know I'm not into anatomy. Maybe you should speak to a vet who specialises in GSDs if you're concerned. I have seen enough to know there is a problem but if people choose to ignore the obvious then i can't do anything about it. What i can do is acknowledge that the judges are (in Australia at least) rewarding the correct dogs so hopefully breeders will see this and adjust accordingly. That's all i will say. I'll leave the thread now as with all DOL conversations people have their own opinions and are immovable and I truly appreciate all differing opinions/standpoints and I have stated mine. Enjoy your chat :) Seeya You're not into anatomy = you really have no idea what you're talking about. Thankyou for leaving this thread and ceasing to talk/generalise about something you know nothing about. :) I think i get what mup is on about. I am seeing a trend of gsds that just don't look right when they walk for example there were 5 at a local obedience rally recently, 1 dog i know personally though the club and 4 others 2 of which were litter mates. The dog I know personally does well in shows (when he can be bothered) and does really well in his obedience. (apart from a bit of sep anx. that i think the owner has encouraged a little. But the only thing he does is fidgit too much which is a shame.) He has a nice thick look in the shoulder and when watched from the side seems to glide in his walk. One of the others non litter mates was hard to judge his stride as he was taught to bounce or spring up in his step, I don't think they show but he was a nice looking healthy dog. Both the litter mates one male one female were 2 years old. the female larger then the male walked with an obvious roll of the back end and a collapse of the hocks inward. when question about this it was stated she had always done it, owner got offended. the male had a what can be described as roll to the hips but not half as severe. the last dog which had an excessive rounding of the back also walked odd and seemed to drop his hip every time he took a step. This dog i believe was also a show dog. All these GSDs were of showlines. the only time i have seen any excessive rolling of the hip is when i have seen HD, I'm not talking loose skin rolls I am talking full body twisting rolls. These dogs are being competed whether in the ring or trial the public are seeing theses examples of breeds.
  3. I prefer to think of it as maintaining perspective rather than getting a thick skin. Far easier to deal with the slings and arrows by seeing those who fire them for what they are rather than trying to ignoring them. Success brings jealousy and bitchiness from the small and nasty minded in all things, not just the show ring. Very true on all counts. I wasn't meaning ignore it (personally I'm not that type of person) However I have seen some people emotionally destroyed by the goings on of a very few. If your not one to walk off, or bite back and wander off home like nothings happen then showing can be pretty harsh environment.
  4. I get my goldens assessed by a Lad breeder in my area. I could ask if she could look at some pictures for an outsider view, I can't promise she will nor can i promise she will think photos are good enough as she is very thorough. Showing isn't the only way to breed. But Conformation is very important maybe talk to a gun dog judge in your area to do a physical exam as well. Or another pleasant gun dog breeder who is willing to help, also people have their own styles even judges so what you get scratched at one show may dominate at another. Plenty of ways to find out her conformation with out pinning her against others. I have my opinion on some shows and their outcomes, which I will not go into. But if your showing and not doing well for any reason other than bad faults, there should be no reason not to start your kennel with her. You still have obedience, agility if you want to compete which I recommend with such a common breed. Temperament, conformation (competed or not) and health testing are the main focus. A title in any ability will open doors. But my point is she doesn't need one just need to tick the boxes and go from there. Study the hell out of labs, different styles and genetic lines. Find out everything about her lines, google and prefixes are great for that. Ring breeders back in her lines ask bout any major health issues they have had or heard of. Get as many opinions as possible as gossip and tarnishing for selfish reasons are a big problem. Avoid mentioning who you have already spoken to and bitchiness from name dropping is a problem too. You see the ones willing to help, they are kind don't usually speak of others nasty even if they aren't a fan of their style. If you are told to avoid anyone do you own research and make up your own mind about them. Find out as much as possible, and you'll see the clicky groups and so forth and so on. Look at these peoples' dogs do you like their style do they match your lines, Most people are willing to stud to anyone who has a good enough bitch not to tarnish their stud. Showing and Breeding is so much more then just the dogs. I've seen it bring out the best in people and I've seen it ruin lives dogs and humans. If you don't have a thick skin don't enter the show ring the better your dog is the worst the nasty ones become.
  5. It's not rude nor judgmental to say you believe, or that's what you do. What is rude and judgmental is people say You should not get a dog cause you can't care for it right or that's irresponsible to never have them inside or how cruel or how dare you. It becomes judgmental when it becomes a direct attack, a statement of generalization but in a derogatory way. Your believe is perfectly fine and explaining why you believe it is perfectly fine, if you were to forcibly impose your believes and/or add statements of a judgmental manner as stated above it becomes rude and judgmental. And for some as haredown stated find out what your dog wants, is fine too but for some. Some people do not want the dog inside, their right not to be judged on that. Some people can not have the dog inside or they risk loosing their home in a breach of conditions. Their right is also not to be judged. A dog in a house doesn't not define good ownership nor good socialization, there is no reliable facts to say it does. So to THOSE only making the actual judgments are who my comments are directed to.
  6. Magician Make Treats disappear!!!!! not in english but we watch for the dogs anyway. http://www.wimp.com/treatsdisappear/
  7. It's recently 4 as my youngest is only 5 mths My girls get isolated during seasons with no problem before. I quite often bring one into the house yard during the day or night by itself. I specifically do this to avoid problems if 1 dog has to be by its self for reasons like injuries, visiting dogs (stud dog visits and my male gets put by himself because of the way he acts when a female is in season, he can't be with the other girls due to a dominance frustration with the other male) I alternate who I pen who with if they get anyone. I have a friend who is a breeder who has to isolate her males during seasons of near by females as he attacks any male and tries to mate every female and being staffies this is only going to get him killed. And up until 4 years ago when I started my kennel I had 1 dog by herself with the same routine no issues. Isolated dogs will go 2-4 weeks of being by themselves with no issues yes they may get an extra hour of training or play time but otherwise business as usual Just making note I have no problems or opinions on how people keep their dogs, if your home 24 hours and your dog is with you so be it I do not judge but for others to say that person should not get a dog or hate to be that animal or whatever opinion They have on the matter , is rude and judgmental. Its one thing to say I don't do that or I do this, then it is to say you are a bad person or you should own a dog. It's condescending and uncalled for. Big difference to state ones own habits then to Judge someone else. There is no laws being broken, he hasn't even a dog do get judged on neglect, and there is nothing constructive with one sided views. Eddie please don't state what you intend of feeding the dog, or what collar if any you intend to have. There would be more judgments imposed. This site has some great people on it with some great advice and criticism and some others. Look through All constructive comments and skip the others. Haredown is right Breeders have their ideals as much as the next person, part of looking for a dog is going to be finding a breeder who suits you as much as you suit them. As it is their babies they have a right to their opinion to where their pup goes. Temperament, characteristics, conformation, health and comfort ability with the breeder must all be ticked none of these should be compromised this is your next 10 + years of emotional and financial commitment. Take your time with finding your dog but start looking for a breeder when ever you can.
  8. Most dogs aren't able to come inside, Most people rent and those owners usually don't allow dogs inside, I know my rental property is strictly outside only. I don't know the people and I can't trust the will train their dogs not to go to destroy my house. People allowing dogs inside when specifically requested otherwise is why owners refuse pets to make sure it doesn't happen, tho even then it still does. As for my dogs here, I specifically brought this house to be close to my kids school it's small and barely fits us, My study is my kitchen table because i can't fit a desk, My dogs have a spacious garden shed with their beds inside. And the girls go on my veranda if they have pups. They are all very happy dogs. My male as a pup was allowed inside but I basically had to skull drag him in so he decided for us at our other house that the dogs would be outside. we spend a lot of time in my back yard the dogs come in from the pen and everyone enjoys the comfort. It is fine for all those to judge if they wish, this site is good for that. But not everyone does things the same and sometimes it just as good or could be more successful then what the one who judge are.
  9. This is how I have always kept my dogs too, I've had GSDs, Rotty's border collies mix breeds and Currently have 4 golden retrievers 3 of which have never been inside my house. At the moment they sleep outside in a penned off yard with a garden shed (with whirly bird) as shelter. This is where they stay in rain or 40 degree weather. The pen has trees for shade ect they have each other for company, my kids after school and me for training on our structured time, they also have unstructured time when ever which isn't much during uni sessions. My dogs are healthy, obedience out going and super friendly to visitors. critisize me if you want but every puppy buyer I've had come meet the dogs have enjoyed the experience and usually stayed over an hour. It my dogs needs weren't met in every way people could be put off by scared, or over excited dogs and couldn't relax outside with 4 dogs and 9 puppies running around them if they were unbalanced in any way. Some dogs need constant attention, and i think that is less a breed thing and more individual. I also think it is they way they are brought up. One who has had constant attention could not sit alone for very long so to speak. Eddie I think find a breed your comfortable with, some compromises may need to be made such as grooming if you find GSD or golden retrievers are your style. the Breeder is the next MOST IMPORTANT THING. Find one your 100% comfortable with, you like their dogs (that you were able to meet), maybe ones who compete in obedience if that is important to you. HEALTH TESTING find out what is required within the breed and what ones are recommended on top. Don't touch anyone who palms off this question. See the actual copies or be provided with photo copies of these test. Ask about health in their lines minor or major issues. And choose a breeder who is for conformation and temperament equally. As both re as important as the other. If you want a dog, get one, put in the effort and ignore remarks that make you feel unworthy as many of us do it the same as your going to. And we have great dogs just like the others do.
  10. I hate this tattoo can't think of a more stupid thing, the next thought (didn't read the article if it is mentioned) Do they plan to keep shaving this dog's shoulder ? And my tat a little sore, more so when something scraped it (on my thigh) so laying in bed sheets where annoying, and a few days later it was itch as F*** can't imagine healing from surgery and having to deal with that trying to relax with no sudden movements then scrape trying to relax cone on head stitches itching and sore, shoulder incredibly itchy I love tats have my artist drawing my next up the entire one side of my back but this in my infliction on myself not a choice i have the right to make for another creature. this person should be charged whit animal cruelty.
  11. I must be in minority, I breed and sell on limited, if asked about main for breeding a few nice questions and information about health testing, politics (certain people out their who don't like the prefixs in my dogs), ANKC eithics, genetics and then financial aspect (health test, prog testing stud fees and c sections) and ask then is that something they want to do. If they are keen and seem to have a financial income that would support the worst case scenario we go to the next step of if I have a quality pup available. This may take a few phone calls and or meetings but its no different to selling a pet pup, you gotta trust a pet pup is going to be looked after. It is not that hard, As for showing there are a lot of forums out their the bitching and politics is there for all to see, why would anyone want to get involved in that. No one want to show cause it isn't fun and thats how Most show people have made it. And thats not even getting into show fixing. It cost a lot of money to show, fees transport grooming just to name a few. Who the hell wants to go to all that trouble to go to a show to see the same dog win all the time. Sometimes the so called corruption is rubbish and sometimes its just thats damn obvious. I saw on FB show people site people talking of a exbitior yelling at a judge no repercussions for it. And speaking of overweight dogs winning BIS as they always do. Why would anyone want to do that. As for obedience that is a long time worth of effort, and life is busy these days I have trouble keeping up with training.
  12. yep, when solids are introduced. chicken necks, very very (can't fit in mouth) large meaty bones for jaw strengthening.
  13. I will not be doing neonatal desexing If my concerns come to the point of the pedigree isn't worth anything more than a puppy farm name or the risk to to many pups being put in a bad situation not desexed. Then I will stop breeding. for 2 reasons 1 I would hope to find that same home that would offer a pup desexed a good life as before i desexed them. 2 I can not ask any more for a common dog desexed as everyone else does undesexed, then i have more out lay which I can not afford. I already do beyond the requirements in health testing to provide a good dog, I can not and will not breed to desex. I have no problem supplying the pet market, they deserve quality dogs, but I will not put a pup under general (and i would not just desex, it would be tubal or vasectomy as i believe the early desexing affects joint growth) just cause i'm concerned something may happen. That is just as bad as every vet pushing for preventative surgery, that may or may not be needed. If the concern out weighs the good of breeding then I just wont breed.
  14. Mmm. If it attacked me, I'd bash it stupid before I even thought about it. Her dog, her choice. Dog is now running the household. One day it will, as Nehkbet suggests, bite her, and that will do for her. Her choice. I'm not one for hitting animals but I'm with Jed on this on. Just hope no one has to retrieve a ball or knock on the front door and be the next victim. and post previous about being worried about the human race, That seriously an issue for along time now, idiots outweigh intelligent beings these days 2-1
  15. I see the business logic here, but it would also be destroying the (whats left of) pedigree quality. destroying the quality most breeders aim for with increasing the quantity of breeders will not help anyone, Labradors are a perfect example, there are so many lab breeders that poor quality dogs bred for colour are destroying the integrity and reputation of the breed. I personally know a lab breeder who breeds black dogs of excellent standard and basically has beg for buyers with lower prices that it just isn't worth the cost of breeding. How is that going to help dogsQLD. and this has been done to staffys, border collies that i know of and will happen anytime a bloody dog movie comes out and misrepresents a breed. I hate to think what is going to happen when every border collie, Australian Shepard is born blind because those who did it properly couldn't afford to do it and every dog came from double merle breeding to maximize profits, or we get aggressive labradors and golden retrievers. What will happen to the bull breeds and any protection breed used when they are used as penis extensions and there is no more good examples of breed, that they are all put on the ban list. Surely moral and ethical logic must come to play here? and this is no long term business plan either this is a get rich quick then retire and let the next generation fold the cards and admit defeat system. I also don't show, I am starting out in obedience but uni and life is getting in the way of training. But all my dogs get conformation tested by a few very experience breeders which not all are of the same breed but have worked with them extensively. I try to ensure what i breed would have a good chance in a honest ring, I encourage anyone who would like to try. But I just don't as the prefixes in my lines aren't what you'd call the in group. And I got crossed by one of those in group when i was starting out because i wouldn't desex my dog, I wanted to wait and see how he turned out. He wouldn't have matched that persons lines which is why i told them my research took me in another direction. I had a pup lined up from another breeder who was thrilled to help. Until one day wouldn't return my calls and just wrote an email say they don't have a bitch for me and probably wont ever, good luck. A few days later i got a call asking how that other dog was going??????? Later found out those 2 are facebook buddies. But i suppose corruption is in all forms.
  16. No thank you. I don't want other states stupid rules re dogs by governing bodies, councils or anything else. Its just fine coping with the crap your own state has true we'd end up with all the ridiculous rules such as the one discuss here destroying all pedigree dogs.
  17. Is there some way we can contest this? I breed a common breed, and there is plenty of genetic diversity. Out of my 17 pups 4 have been kept on main. Those still could better is some areas but show great potential they were kept on main. No pup showed any serious conform fault but things like, bit short in length, angles not quite up to scratch (could be my stacking but was confirmed by someone with experience), not enough chest (as that is what my lines lack a bit of so was looking for good chests). Not one of these little things a vet would pick up on as they all had great temp and passed the rigorous hip manipulation, heart check and hernia check. But I do not think it would better the breed if all these little things were widely available to those not knowledgeable enough to breed to strengthen weakness within the line. We will end up with serious faults which may lead the health issues in the long run.
  18. http://www.wimp.com/kittenpicks/ instead of another topic i thought i would just add it here another vid to watch cute as don't know how to change title to say dog Vids
  19. My Dotty is like that, she'll do it again right in front of you if it's worth the effort.
  20. Tell you friend to keep trying find a breeder who he can respect. I personally know of a lovely lab breeder in queensland so there are nice people out there, if you find one who is nice and you like their stock but they don't have any in the foreseeable ask them who they recommend more often then not, nice people know nice people. I've put a few on to my mentor who will have a litter sometime this year, very close stock to mine but I won't have any pups for over a year, some have requested to wait which in humbling but others have appreciated the help.
