  1. hi all, my dog is going pretty awesome but the last couple of weeks has started running away from strangers and occasionally barking at them. i don't pick him up or cottle him when he does it, i mostly just ignore him. i've had a few friends lure him to them with food/treats which he will eventually take but he won't let them pick him up or pet him. the only people he will let go near him are me and my neighbour who he hangs out with a fair bit. he also sometimes backs up a bit when i go to pick him up. it's really only when he thinks we're going in the car (he gets car sick/drools) or wants to play and be chased! is there anything more i can do to get him happy with people? he's almost 4 months old now, i've had him since 9 weeks. he was fine up until two weeks ago. is it simple fear stage or something more? he is absolutely fine with other dogs. thankyou!
  2. Hi all! Got my first ever puppy a few weeks ago. I've only ever bought adult dogs before from RSPCA, so this is something completely different. A lot more work than i imagined! On the plus side, he's already very very loyal, is fetching and dropping, weeing and pooing outside with only an occasional accident, and will only eat when i say 'okay!' (triangle of temptation). Introducing Ari!
  3. i've got my new JRT pup in a crate at night with a small 7 fin oil heater ($39 from bunnings) next to it and a big blanket folded up a few times covering the crate and heater up together to keep the heat in. i've got the thermostat on around 3 (it goes up to 7) and that seems to keep it nice and warm in there! i do this for him in the morning when i go to work too. no chance of him chewing on it, and he can't get to the cord! no chance of the blanket catching on fire, oil heaters don't get hot enough to ignite cotton/wool but might melt a polyester blanket.
  4. hi all. if my dog is still whining after 10 minutes do i just keep waiting?
  5. thanks guys good to know i'm doing the right thing hopefully! he's already stopped chewing cables which is reassuring! moved on to cushions and shoes on feet now but it's 90% chewing toys which is great :D have read lots on desexing on these forums since yesterday. 6 months-ish seems to be the average.
  6. i'm new around here and have just bought my first puppy. Ari is a 9 week old JRT and the first puppy i have purchased. previously i've always purchased adult rescue dogs. these forums have been a wealth of information! i'm feeling very confident in raising him properly thanks to all the advice here. the only issue i'm having that i couldn't find any info on is Ari chewing things. he's enjoying chewing my clothes while on my lap, and my blanket and sheets while playing on the bed. i'm redirecting him every time to a chew toy straight away, but wondering what else i can do? i'm not using any punishment yet just lots of praise when he starts chewing his chew toy instead of the blanket/clothes. and lastly, when is the best age to have him neutered? is it worth it? he will be coming to work with me a few days a week (tradie) and i'd like to do agility at my local club when he's older. thankyou!
