  1. spoke to a man on the phone at the council today and made a report but he said he can't exactly do anything about the fact that he attacked caliber which is fair enough because i don't have enough evidence or their details but he'll send out a patrol around the time they're usually there because their dog's not meant to be off leash on a public footpath so with the details i've given them i'm pretty sure he'll spot them right away! he's given me a after hours direct number to the patrol man just incase something like that happens again or if i see it happen to someone else and he said to call the patrol man right away, then they can do something about it. but at least i've reported it and they've got it recorded :)
  2. i can only do it first thing in the morning tomorrow (contact the council) or an animal managemenet officer which i never knew even existed but i'll contact the council first and see what they say, i'll keep you guys posted as to what happens.
  3. If you're interested in obedience trialling, at some point you just have to take the plunge and go out and train on your own (or with a friend) ;) 5 minutes of fun fast-paced training and then put the dog away for a break. 45 minutes of solid anything isn't enjoyable for anyone. sounds good it really isn't enjoyable.
  4. I always have two dog lead in my hand, if another dog was biting either of my two, I would whack the dog with the leads. Too much risk to put my foot or leg in the way. good idea ;)
  5. i've been completely flat out today so i didn't get around to do anything about it would it matter if i went to the council tomorrow? luckily, he's actually got no marks on him or anything and he's perfectly fine. to be honest, if it was a small dog i rekon it probably would've ended pretty bad and there's so many tiny dogs around those beaches! if anyone from adelaide reads this thread and goes to somerton/brighton beach, make sure you guys keep an eye out on this non-english speaking, around 60 years of age, grey haired couple with their their off leash german shepherd that tends to walk your way if you've got a dog and they're usually there in the afternoons.
  6. so i'd do it at my council and not the council in the suburb it happened in? and it doesn't matter if you do it the next day? nah, he's okay. if he started bleeding then and there, i definately wouldn't have walked away but then if that happened do you call the cops for that on the spot? i don't know anything about this stuff.
  7. see i've never had to report anything like that before so i don't even know who to report it to? do you have to report it as soon as possible? do you have to give them a description of the people and all that? he actually got pretty scared, i could totally see it in his face but he got over it quickly cause as soon as he saw the next dog he wanted to play and even though that annoys me i'd still rather that than have him fearful of every dog he sees :)
  8. sounds like the obedience place i go to, it's probably the same one! i'm starting to get over it  We got bored in traditional obedience classes too (I think many dogs and owners do!)... not sure why some instructors are determined to suck any fun out of training your dog! i think so too! probably the reason why i never see a lot of them ever again  i've thought about dropping out at times too, it really isn't fun doing the same repetitive excercise over and over again for 45 minutes when you've got a puppy with a short attention span and the trainer demands to keep going without stopping.
  9. so, me and pup go for a walk along the beach almost every afternoon and there's always this older couple there (don't think they speak english as they're always talking in their language) with their german shepherd that's always off leash i don't think i've ever seen them holding a leash but anyway, their dog tends to walk up to other dogs that are walking past and he's walked up to caliber before (i always have him on leash) but the man came and grabbed him by the back of the skin and pulled him away while yelling before anything happened but tonight we were walking again on the footpath along the beach and this couple was there again just watching the beach over the rails back turned to their off lead dog so they didn't even have an eye on him and this time when he started walking towards us (i thought he was just coming to say hello) he went absolutely f***** nuts at caliber while caliber didn't even do anything... he just snapped at him, started biting him, grabbed him by the back of the skin and wouldn't let go while caliber was just yelping and trying to get away and i'm there holding the leash trying to pull him away completely shocked, didn't even know what to do or say cause i've never experienced something like that before! anyway, the man walked over slowly and calmly like it was nothing, yelled and grabbed the dog but not even a word of apology or anything while i walked away just shaking my head thinking should i have just kicked their dog off? yelled at them? should i report them? what should i do if this happens again? but what really pisses me off is that fact that they bring an aggressive dog like that to the beach with so many people, kids and other dogs around without a muzzle on or something and off leash

  11. I know I will get into trouble here again, but the fact is that until you are prepared to make the effort to train your dog it is simply untrue that you'll do "anything" to avoid similar situations. The very best way to avoid similar situations is to train your dog. Try it, you'll be doing your dog the best favor you can do for him. what training are you talking about exactly? if you're talking about leash training, we're actually doing really well as i previously mentioned. he's actually a very well trained boy and we have been attending obedience training since he was younger too. if you're talking about the incident and me avoiding similiar situations, it wasn't anything to do with walking him but it was to do with an accident while his was playing with our neighbours puppy in the front yard it's just that he got blamed when there was another puppy involved too. so i don't understand what you mean by train your dog.
  12. mine does the same, fingers crossed he'll grow out of it as he matures
  13. I don't agree that dogs take advantage of their strength, I think they take advantage of a lack of leadership from their handler to be honest. maybe so but then howcome it's improved when i haven't changed my training technique? either way, i love the new harness It's designed to manage the behaviour and the way to test it to determine if the harness has taught the dog anything is take it off and see what happens ;) Adopting a better training technique could find the dog will behave appropriately off leash too, if a tool doesn't work towards an end result which to me means having obedience without leash restraint, those tools don't really excite me a lot. fair enough, maybe it's my lack of training skills or whatever but i admit i wouldn't trust my dog off leash in public places anyway because all he wants to do is play with any dog in sight, some people even avoid walking past us, our recall command isn't reliable (my fault, i know) and being a rottie he's already been blamed for an accident that wasn't even his fault and i'll do anything to avoid similiar situations again where he'd be the first to get blamed so if it means being on leash all the time then be it I get the picture of where you are coming from, but you would be amazed how a good trainer could help you achieve excellent behaviour. I am just not into tools taking priority over training to gain appropriate behaviour from a dog, "nothing" is more pleasurable to me than owning a controllable and obedient dog, it's just wonderful IMHO and beats any management tools hands down :D i agree, and it's really nice seeing a controllable and obedient dog especially when they're in public places and off leash

  16. caliber was on a martingale collar not long ago, he start taking advantage of his strength and kept pulling me everywhere especially when he use to see another dog and i had very minimum control with the martingale collar (he'd be choking and wouldn't care) so i took someone's idea on this forum about trying a front attach harness and it's just been such a breeze walking him! i absolutely love the front attach harness, you get so much more control and i honestly wouldn't care if i had to use it forever if it makes our walks this enjoyable i totally recommend it but then each to their own and every dog's different, i guess! goodluck
  17. i only like big dogs (to own and looks alone) so i'd have to say - rottie, cane corso, doberman, german shepherd, husky or malamute!
  18. i see so many people walking their dogs when it's hot, i feel sorry for those dogs cause i doubt they'd be comfortable. my dog's so flat when it's this warm, even when it's 28 degrees or so he just lays down all day on the cold tiles in the bathroom and doesn't budge so i'd never consider taking him for a walk when it's hot maybe in the afternoon when it cools down but with the temperatures these past few days in adelaide the nights are too bloody hot aswell so i'll just wait till we get a cooler day
  19. my dog kept running away from me when i was trying to put these antlers on but i managed to take a quick pic
