Sticking to the pro plan for now, but I got a bag of Canidae to trial inside her toys. Samples of black hawk, eagle pack, Nutro, nutrience and holistic select on the way.

Best of luck on the journey ahead. I don't know about the breed, but you see a lot in pounds and being given away so I guess they are a breed that needs a committed, firm, consistent owner.

If he was a horse, I would say he was unsound. It looks like every step is agony. He also reminds me of a poor example of a greyhound through the haunches.

Pointers are lovely, I've always adored them. I nearly got a pointer cross from the pound recently, but was a bit nervous about its behavior with my kids so left it.

One concern that I have is that the prIce is so low that many

Indiscriminating owners might Purchase them. An entire male might escape and go feral. High proportion wolf blood in the general dog, and god forbid, the dingo population, sounds bad, very bad for wildlife.

Although I am unsure of the percentage mix of wolf to dog in this breed. It may well be low, but I've heard that they howl rather than bark instinctively.

Definately not a dog I would consider, I value the lives of my children and fluffies!

I remember as a kid, I used to ride my horse everywhere. One time, I guess I was about 8, I was riding on the hard shoulder of a 60km road and a car of boys thought it was funny to drive my horse off the road with their cars. If my gelding had been slow in jumping out of the way, we could have both been killed. Horrible thought. Being exposed to that sort of thing at such a young age makes this not surprise me, horrific as it is.

Yes she is on the limited register and clear by parentage. Haven't received the scoring for the patents yet but I will certainly ask when I pick her up.

Any thoughts on optimum or advantage?

So difficult because what works for one person doesn't work for another!

I would rather not start feeding something that could be difficult to obtain or has supply issues to save me the angst of making this decision again and again later down the track.

Maybe I should just stay with the pro plan that I am familiar with and see how that goes. The breeder does include some of the hills in the puppy pack so I can transfer off it gradually.

I will never forget when I saw my first parvo case. It was a much loved family dog, but their owners didn't see the importance of paying for routine vet care and the poor sweetheart had never been vaccinated . They waited until the puppy was a walking corpse before bringing it in but still fought against getting him euthanized. The stench was unbelievable.

People who have not been exposed firsthand to parvovirus and the way it savages dogs cannot imagine the nightmare it is.

Picking up my first ever border collie next week and not sure what to feed her. The breeder has them on hills science diet ATM but I am not comfortable with the high corn content, among other things. I would like to transfer off onto something else but even after lots of looking at ingredients I am still unsure.

- at this point in time I can't make a commitment to a raw diet. I would like a complete dry food supplemented by chicken necks and occasional raw offal.

- I use purina pro plan in the past and do like it, but this has been on terriers as opposed to a herding Breed

- at the moment I am leaning towards sticking with pro plan, eagle pack or black hawk.

Would appreciate any thoughts. Ideally this would be suited to a rough collie pup in the future as well.

Gorgeous looking pups, and those border collie types should be relatively easy to rehome!

They have a Facebook page, perhaps a few posts letting potential customers know of the quality of their 'care' would be apt...

The breeder uses a vet who is skilled in EAD. My sister is a vet and says she doesn't believe EAD does any harm, but I have had those I've desexed in the past desexed at the traditional age of around 6 months. That being said this is my first foray into a large dog breed, so I will review the literature available before commiting to EAD. Thank you!

I've shown horses most of my life, and we tend to encourage everyone with a registered animal to go into classes, especially kids. Shetlands are my breed specialization and though there are ponies that will not win at national or royal level, they get out and about at all the local shows and the owners enjoy doing it even if the ponies are not the most 'typey' and even if they are not getting any blue ribbons...does this just not happen in the dog world anymore? Back in the 90s I met many who competed their dogs for pleasure.

Not disputing that animals shown in any clasa, including a neuter class should be of good quality, but as long as there are only minor deviations from the breed standard shouldn't an exhibitor be allowed to get out there with their dog and enjoy themselves?

Thank you for the comments. I wasn't sure if I was being unreasonable putting this forward. And of course it is somewhat hypothetical-- depends on a bitch that is actually show quality and available being thrown in the litter.

I am purchasing a rough collie puppy, from a litter that will arrive (god willing!) towards the end of the year. I really click with the breeder and her dogs are lovely BUT

She told me that she sells all her dogs regardless of quality, except those going to other registered breeders, on the limited register. I have no intention of breeding and the bitch puppy will be neutered before she leaves the breeder. My issue is that I have really enjoyed competing my terriers in the past, only on a low level as a hobby, and would love my kids to have the same opportunity and compete in junior handler classes etc.

Would I have the right to ask politely that if the pup is desexed, could she remain on the full register so that I can enter her in neuter classes? How can I tactfully approach the breeder about this?

I loved the Anne books, so much so that Anne is one of my girl's middle names...small world.

We've called our border collie girl Tessa after Tess of the D'Ubervilles.

She's very good! Such a darling, has been raised so well and is just the best little pup. I have called her Rilla.

One of my daughters is called Rilla. Her real name is actually Johanna, but when she was born the others couldn't say it and called her Gorilla (and sometime Goanna). Gorilla got shortened to Rilla for nicety's sake and now we use it all the time.
