  1. My dog dove under a bush on a walk one day and I had to drag her out, she had found a possum which I estimate had been there for around two weeks, cold, mouldy, decomposing, head removed, bloody/furry mess, guts coming out, stench like you would not believe.

She had clamped down hard on it and was not going to let go of her prize.

I had to straddle her body from behind wedging her between my legs so she could not move and pry apart her jaws, it took about 10mins.

Much to my dissapointment I could not shake the possum free once her teeth were apart, it was wedged in her jaw and I had to stick my hands in and scoop the decomposing possum bits out of her mouth.

  2. Mine get fed after their morning walk and after their evening walk.

But once my pup is over 1 year and my underweight one is at a healthy weight this may be cutdown to evening only, not sure what I want to do yet. If I did this though I would probably leave the bob-a-lot or wobbler out for them during the day with some kibble in it anyway

  3. It used to be that people who wanted to get an abandoned or abused animal went to the local pound, saw one they liked, paid a small fee, and drove home with a new pet.
At this point, many frustrated animal lovers can commit an act they’d previously thought abhorrent: They buy a dog, cat, bird, or guinea pig from a pet store or breeder. I know because that’s what happened to me.

Last time I checked you can still adopt direct from the pound!

PS, I filled in a questionnaire when I got a dog from rescue but the one I filled in for my Pedigree was way longer and I found both fine.

  4. I use their auto delivery now and used the fetching dogs code for my first order. I ordered at about 2pm and recieved my 15kg bag of advance the next day, I was very happy with the service.

On the regular delivery plan the price I pay for the advance kibble is what I normally pay from Petbarn when it is on special about 20% off.

  5. one of my previous lab pup ate heaps of rocks and she poo'ed out heaps of rocks. not sure if any stayed in her though. I do know of other dogs that have had rocks or other objects (socks, tennis balls etc) clog their insides though.

Have you seen any in his poo? If you know he is eating them and you don't see any come out then they must be building up in there.

  6. Hi Jaid,

    I second Ams' response.

Only I would add that vet work inculde mandatory desexing.

Since you want to look to foster or adopt in the future, do you have a specific breed or type of dog which would suit you/your lifestyle? ie. bull breeds, large breeds, small breeds etc as this may lead you towards a particular rescue group.

Since you are in NSW maybe take a look at the list of rescue organisations on Renbury Farm Animal Shelter website. Renbury really care about the animals and will not deal with groups such as PR. If you don't decide on a rescue group in time for christmas Renbury have a christmas appeal on at the moment. They don't accept monetary gifts but they will always welcome toys (preferably washable) and treats for the poundies in need, details can be found on their FB page.

A lot of the groups have facebook pages, ask questions on there about their operations and if you find your comments get deleted, not answered or you get attacked for asking them then it's probably not a group you want to deal with.

Good luck and thank you for caring about the needies!

  7. Also I have just remembered there is Northern Victorian Sled Dog Rescue/Rehoming.

Alaskan Malamute Rehoming Aid Aust will most likely have some Husky x Malamutes available in VIC as well if he is open to a x breed.

  8. Yup would definitely recommend Arctic Breed Rescue as well, my boy is from them. I filled in an online form and was called back on the same day with a meet and greet organised for the following Saturday. I have also had excellent follow up support from them and could not be happier.

They are primarily operating in NSW and QLD but have been known to do interstate options, usually a back up plan is necessary in case it doesn't work out. Would you friend be prepared to travel to meet and greet?

I think that the Siberian Husky club of Vic also have a rescue arm, I have not had dealings with them though.

If you want to PM me about his situation I can see if there is any reason that I think he would not be suitable?

  9. Dog Rescue Humour:

    1. You have a mental list of people you'd like to spay, neuter or euthanize.

 This one is definitely my favourite

    17. For relaxation, you went mall hopping with your girlfriends. Your eyes glazed over when you saw a sign in front of a pet shop, "20% Off All Puppies & Kittens," and you slapped three security guards before they got you safely contained in the manager's office.

People in rescue have relaxation time? :D

  10. Yes, mine are allowed if I say kisses and point to my cheek. Or if they have accidentally nipped me during a game of bitey face they give me a lick on the hand to say sorry.

I don't like licky dogs though, mine are ok as they only lick when I ask them to.

If I get licked on the mouth or it is slobbery then I will wash it straight away but if I just get cheek kisses I don't bother.

My last Lab pup on the other hand had an obsession with licking the back of my knees which was very not appreciated. Only me and only the back of me knees...all the time.

  11. There is a topic called "triangle of temptation" on this forum somewhere, I don't know how to link to it.

It is about drive training and may help you, I have heard very positive feedback about it.

I agree that recall training is your best bet. When I use a long line for recall training I start in a distraction free area then go to areas with increasingly more distractions as we progress. Maybe if she is already used to doing what she wants in the dog park you can go there and do long line recall training when there are no other dogs around so that she learns that she has to recall in the dog park as well?

  12. I have K9 pro collars too and like them. Although they are basically only there to hold the dogs ID contact tags. They are very sturdy and well made.

The Ruthless ones look great but since you can't usually see their collar under all their fur I haven't bought one.

I use the front attach harness for walking, both my dogs have been trained to walk loose lead on this. I am wanting to have a go at sledding them next season though so we will see if after that they start to pull in their walking harness. I reckon they will know the difference between them, I use a car harness which attaches on the back and they are impossible to walk on it, just constantly pulling but put them back on the easy walker and they are great.

Still doesn't stop me from dropping the lead though every now and then. Have you thought about getting a waist attach/hands free leash? K9pro sell the Kyjen one. I think I would end up needing a hip replacement if Athena saw a cat while walking on it so I don't use it but maybe it would suit you. All the other Kyjen stuff I own is good quality.

ETA - Ok so I caved and ordered Ruthless collars for my two, I just couldn't resist them any longer. I have ordered the locking attachment on the matching leads for extra security as well.
