  1. "If you have a pup who goes into drive when mouthing, be aware that they get chemical rewards in their brain at that point so simply ignoring them or redirecting them will often not work. I see this most often in the gundog and herding breeds. "

So help me out here- i have a gundog and she will be in the showring- i dont want her to be aggressive in the future.............

  2. I agree with Willow, crate = great safe haven!!

I did try the time out thing, but, my dog ate the door :)

Ignore ignore ignore, always good, but sometimes with very young pups they just go and do something else horrendous. Little angels :)

periau, I use photobucket to post pics. I think there are several pointers on this in the photo photo section.

Yaye- i think i did it

  3. i found the thing that worked best for my ES pup was when the would bite i would say uh-uh then give them a toy they could chew, then praise when they obliged.

A loud yelp sometimes works too...

if she bites one of the Irish, they might just tell her about it which is a good thing IMO.

I have done the yelping and uh uh bit and given her something else to chew- she just goes for my hand or face again.

Yep Im hoping the Irish do tell her off too but, they only growl out her and she doesnt listen.

  4. I have a 9 week old irish red and white setter pup.

Since her being here( i live with 7 adult irish setters, their breeder and my 3 x bred dogs, she has bitten my housemates face and attaches herself to the bottoms of my pj pants and wont let go- i have tried yelping, "bah", and tapping her nose- even time out in her crate( possibly mixed signals for her)?

I dont want her to bite the wrong dog- they are all show dogs

  5. Anyone got a good write up on how and why to crate train a pup? SIL has agreed to do this with their new pup :( This is their first dog and i am trying to get a heap of info together for her!

Also - Does anyone have info on why a pup should stay with its litter mates till 8 weeks? She was asking me why, i told her what i know, but would like to send her something that she can read.

    Thanks!!

    Hey TB

I have just put the puppy portfolios together for my housemates puppies that have just left and put some articles in there on crate training- would you like the links??

  6. Puppies vaccinated at 6 weeks have zero immunity.....This is why the breeder has done it at 8 weeks, as puppies 8 weeks or older will be immune! 3 days after a shot is enough isolation before going in public......

The more shots you give the less immunity your dog will have :)

My new pup was vaccinated at 6 weeks then i have been told needs another 2 shots?

However when i get her 2nd shot done ive been told to make it a c5 then she wont need another- is this correct?

I'd stick to C3 and give one more shot at 12 weeks. You only need KC shot if you're going into kennels.

So as she will be a show dog a C3 is sufficient? From what i just read om some other threads it would be better to get a C5 or C6- as Kennel Cough like most things is going around.

And I've seen many show dogs get it anyway...

Better to build a strong immune system so that if they do catch it, they get over it quickly.

I show mine and he's not vacc with KC and never will.

    Thanks Tess

  8. Another question guys- not for my pup- but someone else i know. Those stuffed toys with a heartbeat, where to get them and what are they called?

I bought my new one a Snuggle Puppie - is a soft fluffy toy, has a heartbeat, heat pads and a renewable heat pack (rice you heat in the micro). If you google snuggle puppie you'll find it. He turns up tomorrow so don't know if he likes it or not yet  I bought it direct from the company online, fairly slow delivery (but I am in the middle of nowhere so that is probably why it too a little while).

Ahhhh thanks for that- I couldnt quite remember the name!!- Brilliant will check them out.

  9. Ok - i have been searching online and wonder where the best place is to get a kong, cheapest?

I got her some bones today to chew on but she isnt fussed! The breeder told me she loved them!
