  1. You can tell what a good and wise dog he was just by looking at that photo. I'm sure you miss him every day. How wonderful to have had such a bond with such a special (and beautiful) boy.
  2. Just fantastic. You are so lucky to be able to see them. Thanks for the great pics!
  3. That is just brilliant. How wonderful! Thanks for putting your pics up :)
  4. I just read about this product on another forum - Dog Ends. They are designed for tails that are bleeding at the end. My link
  5. We give meaty bones (not mammal leg bones) and dog rusks (oven dried ends of bread loaves) plus use a doggie toothbrush and toothpaste (now and then). Large bits of raw pumpkin or whole sweet potato are good too (if you have a dog that enjoys these). I don't think that any kind of treats or kibble shapes would actually clean teeth. The dog needs to slice through something decently large.
  6. You can buy it at pet shops (I know that PetStock have it - not sure if that's the cheapest source though). I have used VAN and found it to be very good (though we've switched to BARF patties as they don't need any prep...mind you, the VAN doesn't need much prep either). Oops - just saw that Donatella had already mentioned that you can get it at pet shops :)
  7. Good choice to go another Lab :) They do have a certain play style ("I'll try to bite your face off then you try to bite my face off then we'll run around like loons slamming into eachother every 3 seconds then we'll wrestle to see who can push who over using their butt while maintaining a stranglehold on the throat"). Two Labs will have a ball together - swimming, snuggling and rumbling. Good times :)
  8. What a lovely photo tribute to your boy. He looks very smart and cheeky :) Had to laugh about your 'using the carpet as a serviette' comment. I'm sure he loved you dearly and would have stayed forever if only he could have.
  9. That is excellent! What a great thrill :) Congratulations on Coco's and your achievement.
  10. He's absolutely gorgeous. I bet you wish the next few days would go by in a flash!
  11. Congratulations on the impending arrival of your new puppy! Generally the next step after puppy school is an obedience dog training club (more fun than it sounds :) ). They will have Kindi classes for pups. What general area do you live in? People on here are likely to be able to recommend a club. Edit: e.g. here is one example in Perth: Northern Suburbs Dog Club
  12. Seriously amazing. Can't begin to imagine what having a dog's sense of smell would be like.
  13. Congratulations on your and Hudson's great achievement :)
  14. I agree with everything that has been said in this thread so far. You are doing everything right. The next time the instructor wants to pull your dog and the tense dog together I would politely decline the opportunity.
  15. How incredibly dreadful to lose her at such a young and vibrant age, and in such a way. You must feel knocked flat. I am so sorry It's absolutely not your fault though. You did exactly the right things - seeking vet advice and attention at all the right times. You did not let your girl down.
  16. We are Labrador people. Given the choice between.... A) a coat that sheds a lot but dries fast, and is easy and quick to brush but brings with it a need for increased vacuuming and a tolerance for a bit of fur on clothes and car seats, and couches and beds and well pretty much all over the shop.....and.... B) a coat that doesn't drop fur all the time but that needs clipping regularly.... ...I would still go for A. I know I'd rather brush and vacuum than clip. For others A would sound appalling! :) I've got a friend with a severely allergic family (who all love animals). They got a Lagotto and he is perfect for them. But when my friend gets in my car she just about has an asthma attack, poor thing.
  17. He's absolutely gorgeous. Sounds like you are both delighted with him :)
  18. Literally laughed till I cried. What is it about dogs knocking people over..? What a scream
  19. Ah yes, I remember your red girl! :) And your very excellent uniforms :)
  20. Belconnen has a good flyball group :) The advantage of joining an established group is that they will have all the necessary equipment, which can be expensive. You can slot right in to an established training program. I am at the ACT Companion Dog Club where training for beginner dogs (that's the class we are on) is at 3pm on Sundays and competition team training is at 4pm. To be honest, we can only muster one team at the moment, but flyball is building back up at our club. We are aiming to have a 100% Labrador team for a comp someday, LOL. Many years ago we had a black Lab team for one comp - we called ourselves Black Lightening and it was a big hoot. Not the fastest team on the block but the most colour co-ordinated! Clover - I am sure I would know you, then! How lovely that you remember my Nicolae :)
  21. So sorry about the loss of your lovely dog. I'm sure that your house is in need of a wagging tail and a doggie smile. Google Don't Fret Pet - they are a pet sitting service that arrange for dogs to be minded in a person's home. Maybe becoming a pet minder for them would be an option? We use them for our Labrador here in Canberra (very happy with the service and the quality of minders).
  22. Bummer to hear that the team is not going ahead, It's also a pity that you are not in the Canberra area, MUP - our club needs more flyballers and your dog would be very welcome :) We have had everything from JRT to a Wolfhound in our team before. My dog, Obi, is just starting out and has been to two training sessions. My previous dog, Nicolae, did flyball with me for many years and loved every second. It's an awesome sport and flyball people are generally fun, relaxed and enthusiastic. I hope you get the chance to try it at some point in the future :)
