  1. I just saw on the news a couples staffy was attacked and killed by a male bull Arab and female ridgeback and their other staffy was seriously injured.

The 2 attacking dogs had just had puppies so it was a territorial attack I guess but apparently the neighborhood has been worried about them for some time.

My heart goes out to the poor staffy and it's owners. His name was Joey :-(

The bull Arab has been PTS

  2. OMG your poor babies, I'm so glad they escaped with their lives. I hope your injuries are healing well too. I can't believe the b**ch is trying to get out of paying the rest of the vet bills. She shouldn't be allowed to keep her dogs if she isn't financially stable, what if they got sick, how would she pay then. I sincerely hope you can get the money out of her, you shouldn't have to suffer the pain and stress as well as the financial beating :mad

  3. Yeah as others have said, you can get a funny reaction if the clicker is too loud as its kind of like pairing something good with something a bit painful.

Initially Digby found the typical box clicker too loud and I had to get another one, but after a bit he became fine with the box one as well. I personally find the box clickers really good for outdoor use and behaviour mod as they seem to grab the dog's attention really well. For indoor stuff the quieter ones are often a better choice :)

I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with the clicker, your boxer sounds like a real character and you should be able to capture some interesting behaviours with him :)

That's a good idea using a quieter one inside

He's so funny, makes me laugh everyday with his silly antics or even when he's just being a lazy slob he curls up in the strangest positions

  4. Throw the treat on the floor & click just the millisecond BEFORE he picks it up. You can muffle the sound of the clicker by holding it in your pocket or putting a bit of blu tac in it. You can practice your precision without a dog. Get hubby to throw a ball into the air & you click when you think it is at it's highest point, then click again the exact moment it touches the floor & get hubby to judge how accurate you were. For more info, click on this link & follow down to the PDF file Introduction to Clicker Training& welcome to the fun world of Clicker Training, you & your dogs will have some fun.

That's a good idea actually! I've done some research now into how to go about clicker training - I really just wanted to see his reaction...the other dogs didn't care one bit!

  5. So when puppy eventually comes home I want to take a week off work so I can settle him in as he will be outside with the boxer while we are at work.

What is the best way to do this? All I can think of is go out for short periods (or even just hide in the house and spy on them at first) and extend the time I'm gone for??

  6. So I order 2 clickers from ebay for hubby and I as we plan on getting a great dane pup in the coming months but I wanted to test them out on our boxer first.

I figured I'd start with treats and clicks simulatneously - FUNNIEST REACTION EVER! He took his treat then reared up like a pony and pranced away then came running back, bum wiggling but looking aprehensively at the clicker...I'm literally giggling typing this - he's such a funny boy!

Does anyone else have any funny reactions when using a clicker for the first time?

  7. If it wasn't so naughty it would be adorable!

I hear you! I get swayed by the wiggle-bum cuteness

I am going to stalk this thread as well. Soft spot for Danes.

    (Dogs and men)

I have a soft spot for Vislas!

I have a boxer and his butt is the wiggliest, so funny! And he has a docked tail so when he's in trouble you see it wiggling haha it's so funny

  8. haha! Oh no that must be tough!

It wasn't really because of anything important I did, they just happened not to counter surf. One of them was very uninterested in food, the other just never seems to take stuff from the bench, she takes a lot of other stuff though!

Not going off topic, we reckon Herbie has the spirit of two earlier dogs that were professional counter surfers. Problem is the flooring is ceramic tiles. Means broken glass if I have been careless.

    :mad:cry:

If it wasn't so naughty it would be adorable!

  9. You might not have trouble with counter surfing, I didn't have that problem with my two Danes. Teaching a good 'leave it' command is very important :)

I'd actually like to teach him to stay away from the kitchen anyway, possibly using the tape method like Honey the Great Dane got taught

That was going to be my tip, watch all you can of Honey. :D

Such a smart girl she was! I still follow her owners blog too

  11. The question "has she gotten bigger?" gets asked everyday around here. Treasure the few weeks you can actually pick your puppy up and make sure anything you let pup do you will still want to do when its 10 times the size... lucky I don't mind big puppy lap cuddles :)

My friend has a 6 month old Dane pup who I see 1-2 times a week and each time she gets bigger & more beautiful. It amazes me how quick they grow!

I've been watching old videos of honey the Great Dane trying to teach myself how to teach my Dane to have manners etc like honey

  12. My youngest is only part Dane, and she is a terrible counter surfer... luckily I can still put most things at the back of the counters where she can't reach... but a full sized Dane will be a different story... errr!

    T.

Haha oh yes I almost forgot about counter surfing!

  13. Thanks guys!

I think there's only one pup who's nose will be out of joint, but she's the eldest & is already queen bee (and only female other than myself in the house) so I dare say she'll assert her position pretty quickly & the other will follow suit!

    Puppy proofing here I come!

  14. Hi all!

So if all goes well (I find out early April if the matings have taken) my dream puppy (Great Dane) will be born next month  Almost crying with joy right now - I have been wanting a Dane for at least 25 years (I am almost 31 for reference).

So anyway, I haven't had a puppy in the house for so long I'm looking for general pointers on things to do and not to do that I may have forgotten about. I'm all good with the obvious things like how to deal with the first few nights at home and potty training etc

Also, what is the best way to introduce him to my other dogs, we have 5 so they run as a well oiled machine/pack so I want the new pup to fit in asap.

That's all I can think to ask for now :D

  15. Thanks for the replies everyone, I really do appreciate it!

We have been having some success with a kong with chicken mince stuffed in it, she LOVES her chicken mince! I have also been using frankfurts to train her as she loves those as well

I think we will use the kong as her special treat! I have tried the toilet rolls and coke bottles after reading it on this forum a few times and she loves those as well :) The first day she wasnt interested in any of her new toys just those!

Will deff take your suggestions on board

I was just going to suggest a kong or pigs ear or something - something to keep her mind stimulated! Sounds like you're doing a great job :)

  16. For me as an owner only (not a breeder) I don't think I would've sold the pup in the first place. If someone can't afford to buy a dog up front, I'd be questioning their ability to afford the ongoing upkeep costs.

Yes and no - perhaps the pup was ready to go to it's home before they had all the money together? Plus for me personally $1500-2000 is a lot to fork out in cash yet if something happens to my dogs there is insurance and credit cards

This couple have a young daughter and both work and have vehicles of their own. The issue isn't that they can't pay, its that they don't want to pay. Most people who owe money fill you in when they will pay you back, I lend money to my dad and brothers all the time and friends with no such issues. There has been zero communication from them 3 weeks from getting the pup when they told me a week and they will fix me up. I was concerned about them as buyers but being acquaintances and the fact I had 7 puppies at the time, I thought I will help them out and let them pay off remainder. 1500 is a lot of money but it weeds out the unscrupulous owners who can't afford it. I paid 2500 plus airfare to SA for my boy. You need to pay for quality. There was only 2 boys in the litter and they got the best one. All pups have been sold bar 1 to exceptional buyers apart from these guys.

Anyway gotta get ready for a funeral, will be back later today.

Again thanks for all the replies everyone, this forum is full of good people willing to help. Def one of the better aussie forums I have been a member of. thumbsup1.gif

It's so crappy bc you did a nice thing and this is what you get in return! I hope you get the rest of what's owed to you

  18. We have 5: chihuahua, shihtzu, shihtzu mix, daxi cross staffy and a boxer. It can be a little hard at times (especially as we rent so come inspection day we have to ship 3 off to my parents) and moving forward I would never own as many. I think 2-3 is the perfect number but this also depends on which breeds, how much room you have and your lifestyle.
