  1. My first dog was a Chihuahua and she lived to the ripe old age of 18. I've always had a fondness for the breed and although I was contemplating purchasing either a Shetland Sheepdog or a Japanese Spitz, I opted for the Chihuahua instead as I didn't want to risk ending up with a very vocal breed which both the SS and the JS are known for. I've always looked at photos of Chihuahua pups but have found that there seems to be a trend towards the Deer type rather than the apple head. Both are equally gorgeous but I do prefer the shorter nosed, apple head type. I don't know if it's just me but years ago the apple head was more prevalent but not so much nowadays.
  2. My first dog was a Chihuahua, Cleo. Whenever possible I would take her everywhere with me. Although I personally found Cleo easy to handle, I'm not sure that I would recommend Chihuahuas to first time owners and especially not to a family with young children. Having said that, it really depends on the individuals concerned.
  3. I've decided that, given my husband does not like barking dogs, that I will opt for a chihuahua instead. My first dog was a Chihuahua, she was my shadow and I will always have a soft spot for the breed.
  4. The barking wouldn't be a problem as I would have the patience to teach him to keep it to a minimum. Not sure about the OH though. I have met both shelties and JS and am still strapped for a decision. The thought that they can be barkers is of concern though.
  5. Well that's cruel. Why isn't he on your bed?     There's no space for him on our bed. It's a queen size bed and it's comfortable enough for my hubby and myself. The thought of upgrading to a king size bed has dawned on me but unless I'm keen for a divorce, I'm better off leaving things just as they are, lol.
  6. I forgot to mention I currently own a Standard Poodle, he's 4yo and desexed. He sleeps inside on his own bed on my bedroom floor.
  7. Thank you so much for each of your responses, much appreciated. I totally love the look of both breeds but especially the JS, the white coat mesmerises me. The sheltie is a close second. From the sounds of things I'd prefer a dog that is a little more responsive so I think the Sheltie would suit me a little more.
  8. That is good to know. Next time I have my 12 yo toy poodle's teeth cleaned I will mention this to the vet.
  9. I would love to own either a Japanese Spitz or a Shetland Sheepdog. I live on 14 acres of which they would have 3 safely enclosed acres to roam around in. They would be indoor/outdoor dogs but spend a considerable amount of time with me as I'm home most of the time. I cannot, for the life of me, make up my mind which of the two I should choose. I don't want a dog that is everybody's friend. I want an alert and intelligent dog, one that is easily trained. Both appeal to my sense of taste. I would love the opinion of both SS and JS owners/former owners. Thank you.
  10. I would like to invest in good quality cordless clippers as opposed to trimmers. I'd prefer a pair that can do an all-over clip, don't get too hot and can cut through thick coats. Has anyone had experience with Heiniger Saphir Cordless Clippers? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
